Northeast Ohio / Cleveland: General Transit Thread
OH, I'm too stupid to see that KJP posted this link directly above. Well, all I wanted to say was those Lakewood Observers need to do some research!

For us singles, this thread is for you!
^^ Haha, I didn't even see those comments. Thanks! I never thought of copywriting the story. I just like to write a lot. That was just a fun little thing I did. My ultimate goal is to get something published, be it a short story or book or something. It's funny because I was a newspaper reporter for a little while and I saw my name every day in print, but it just wasn't where my heart was.... ANYWAY. Cincy and Cleveland keepin' it street at the bottom of this list again: http://www.forbes.com/2007/08/21/best-cities-singles-forbeslife-singles07-cx_ee_mn_0821singles_land.html These lists are dopey and I don't take them seriously; however, I suppose wouldn't say Cleveland is getting the shaft in this case because the Cleveland/Detroit area are distinctly different than places like NYC. A lot of my cohorts are getting engaged and married now. Growing up, I never considered getting married before I turned 30. However, I think this region has a slightly older fashion look at these things.

I might be in the PD sometime soon for a story unrelated to transit, but I advocated TOD in my quotes. Keeping the revolution close to my heart!

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
My dad lived in a trailer for a short time. But, anyway, I'm just saying there other things that could be done to soften the look of the rodeo theme going on. Add some flowers or something.

Couldn't they have done something a little more delicate, like using rope or chain? You could even do something neat with specially designed tarps and fabric. I think Christmas lights would be neat at night. Or you could try and create an ivy effect to section it off. At Flannery's, you could circle the outdoor area with tied Irish flags. :speech:

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
^ I know! Obviously it'll be difficult getting new routes, but we just got a story in the PD about one women who has the only house left in her neighborhood and the Rapid drives right by. We don't need to extend or change the routes. Just redevelop around the stations! Sorry, this is so obvious to everyone here. I need to write a letter to the PD.

Cleveland: Port Authority News & Info
""I think it's the right approach, to plug Cleveland into the global economy through our port," said Paul Oyaski, head of Cuyahoga County Department of Development." Yeah, no duh to that quote. Of course, there's no mention of the increased push to decrease ocean vessels in the Great Lakes due to invasive species and the lakes' health. It drives me nuts when a story comes out that has this big idea but doesn't mention the things going on in the background that could affect it.

^ I think people reacted negatively to the idea of IKEA in Cleveland because it seemed the ruled us out for the immediate future when they picked the Cincy-area location for expansion. They seem to have some very stringent criteria for placing stores. Maybe that'll change, ala H&M, but I would argue that that retailer is in danger of making itself a commodity.

^ Nice! On the NBC Evening News tonight, they did a big feature on these two guys from Cleveland that invented the Swiffer and other stuff like that. They work out of an old church...near University Circle. I feel like this is the same place that was in that NY Times story a while back. Pretty neat!

I won't even drive to Cleveland Heights to go to American Apparel. No offense to any AA fans, (I've purchased a t-shirt there!) but that place looks like "To Catch a Predator" attire. Velvet daisy duke jogging shorts for guys freaks me out, I'm sorry. Musky makes a good point about IKEA and Lake Erie. That store is played out anyway, imho. I say that mostly because my apartment is a mish-mash of furniture hand-me-downs and DIY projects that that modern stuff would never work with, haha. OH YES, what I purchased at Marshalls: Tie from from Jones NY; dress shirt from the Sean John (that tailored line he sells) and then a dress shirt from some Kenneth Cole sub-brand I've never heard of... $30+ tax. I'm very happy with the tie and Sean John shirt, but I took a chance with the Kenneth Cole shirt which is 25% synthetic fabric, and that was a waste of $10. It's too baggy, too. I learned my lesson. I also finally figured my shirt size out. Put a TJ Maxx down there!

Cleveland Public Schools: News and Discussion
Long live public school! I'll tell you a story about a young altar boy named JamieC who took the tests and wrote a very thought-out essay to try and get into Walsh Jesuit High School. He did perfectly fine on all his tests but still didn't get in to that stupid high school, he suspects because his dad added an additional letter to the application that said he wanted him to do a work-study program to help pay for the cost - including janitorial work. Maybe kids don't clean the urinals at Walsh! JamieC's parish pastor was so mad when he didn't get in, he called his parents and said he'd make some calls. JamieC was so mad, he stopped going to church when he was 16. Take that! It makes me sad that public schools are doing so bad because I personally think they are an amazing resource and important to understanding people in your community. We are facing some real problems in funding, culture, families -- EVERYWHERE. I don't know if uniforms will help, but if they help keep kids safe in some way, then it's worth it. Unfortunately, you need to be careful. My high school in Cuyahoga Falls started treating kids like convicts and they started acting like convicts.

^ I was thinking the same thing. Why would you destroy infrastructure in one place and then build it somewhere else. This whole idea to me sounds like failure repackaged as success.
