Cleveland: Retail News
I said the "same sort" of stores. Somerset: http://www.thesomersetcollection.com/directory/alphabetical.aspx Beachwood: http://www.beachwoodplace.com/mallmap.asp?mallid=1601 Neither of 'em has a Cinabon, and I think that's un-American.

Other States: Passenger Rail News
And, that's human-scale development. Notice how the traffic isn't bumper to bumper given the density of the neighborhood? No one seems to be obese either... If I went there I'd never come back!!! Yeah, no doubt! As my nephew said about visiting the Toys 'R Us in Times Square -- "That's my DREAM!"

Cleveland: Retail News
I believe the company that owns Beachwood also owns Somerset in the Detroit suburb of Troy. It is similar to Beachwood, although constructed more recently, I believe. Same sort of stores. I remember I was tooling around in my little Honda Civic one day, and I crossed over into Troy for the first time, and I was passed by a Ferrari. It felt very symbolic. It was probably the CEO of GM.

Über-der-Rhein!!!
I've never been to Cincy, but OTR looks like the most beautiful urban neighborhood in Ohio. Great shots!

LaGuardia via bus?
Most exact directions EVER, MTS! Thanks :) I'm curious to see how much of a pull NYC has for me when I visit for the first time in two years.

Cleveland: Marketing the City
^ I'm thinking about writing a letter. I'm not too happy by our police force right now. I respect cops, but come one, did they get CompStat and not pull it out of the packaging? We need aggressive, progressive policing. What's happening right now is not working. edit: eerrrr. make that "citistat." ;)

Skylines Combined--Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati =)
Cool! I personally think that Key Tower should be moved over to the Cincy neighborhood of Cinclebus. Just gives the skyline more balance, imho.

Maybe ODOT will buy you a bubble for a house?

Cleveland: Random Development and News
I personally think they are needed downtown... And I don't like that Cleveland ad. Some magazine I've never heard of isn't going to convince people that this area is so great. Oh well. We should pull our pennies and do our own ads.

LaGuardia via bus?
Listen, you guys are preachin' to the choir here! I have been obsessed with subways since I lived in Boston in college. I love watching for the light to appear way back in tunnels and the way the wheels screech as the train slows and turns. I love how in NYC, little kids have the guts to run between trains as it moves full speed. I just don't know much about buses because they don't have any appeal to me, so I avoid them like the plague. When I lived in Boston, I was going with people from my dorm to Cambridge for dinner, and I was stoked to take the red line, and then I found out that the subway "may him sick to his stomach." So we had to stop and go for 40 minutes on a lousy bus on Mass. Ave. I was so disappointed -- lousy bus! I'm going to save big bucks by walking to the Rapid in Lakewood and taking the bus in Queens -- between parking and taxis, I figure I'll save at least $90 just on the first day! Thanks for the help! BTW, does the M60 bus just come back the same way to go back to the airport? I'm trying to decide if I want to go the same way back. I only worry I'll be too busy "having fun" and public transportation won't be fast enough to get me to the airport in time.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
Don't know if this goes here, but my mom said she and my dad saw an Amtrak passenger train on the tracks near Heinen's in Hudson. Lived there several years and have never seen Amtrak on the rails through town...

Cleveland / Lakewood: The Edge Developments
Boo, hiss! You'd think that this would be an no-brainer with all the people living in the area, including the affluent folks on Lake and Edgewater.

Cleveland: Marketing the City
Even here in the DC area, which has no shortage of young people, I know a few folks who turned down job offers simply because the job was located in Tysons Corner or Reston, Virginia. Most of them opted for a job in-town, accessible by Metro. Good point, Dan. If I were moving to NYC, Boston or DC, I wouldn't take a job that isn't close to public transit! edit: Also, on further thought, my request of those marketing Cleveland to youngins. Can we touch everyone rather than just "young professionals?" I just say this because it seems like when people in Cleveland think "young" they think of the networking groups across the region. I just don't think the average young person is in touch with that sort of thing, I know I'm not. It talks all types of people to make a fun, vibrant community -- from hair stylists to lawyers to construction workers!

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Even I know this is a big deal! All of the sudden, the Browns aren't horrible!

^^ I agree with KJP. During the winter, this town has really gone into hibernation and it is rather depressing. I don't blame people. Just a couple weeks ago, I had to go from the Theater District to the Warehouse District and I just ran from my building to the trolley and right out the trolley door to the building where I was going. Now, in the summer, people are all over! Star Plaza is mobbed with people eating lunch; folks in offices are in their jogging outfits going on runs in packs of three or more! I know Dan doesn't believe it, but the areas where I hang out, primarily Euclid between E. 12 and Public Square, have a lot of foot-traffic during the summer weekdays. Is it midtown NYC? No, but it definitely reflects the number of people downtown.

ODOT Policy Discussion
They've got an Applebees and a Walmarts out there too! If that ain't livin', I don't know what is. Maybe I'll move to Paris. Who am I kidding, they'd never let my ass in.

ODOT Policy Discussion
ARGH! This is the sort of talk that gets me saying "Why am I still here?"

Cycling Advocacy
Yeah, there's quite a debate in the bike community over the validity of bike lanes. A lot of cyclists like are very hardcore vehicular cyclists where they want to ride in traffic like everyone else. Personally, I like bike lanes in suburban, rural areas where traffic is going fast, but I "take the lane" in more narrow, urban areas, such as on Detroit in Lakewood.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
I've seen a number of broken down buses recently, including one on the Shoreway a month or two ago.

East Coasters with Kiddo Moving to Cleveland
I wasn't looking to move, but Montlack has an apartment available in the University Circle area that is looking VERY attractive right now! (especially after doing my taxes. Lakewood, what a bunch of hosers!)

^^ True story... I not a sports junky, but with precious little space available in the press for women's sports, I sort of feel like reporters aren't going to have the room available to them to diss Cleveland. I could be wrong!

Cleveland: District of Design
There's no reason why this wouldn't work. Kent State has a very big fashion school, as well, and if the Industrial Design district were to take off and others were welcome, I could definitely see KSU setting up something downtown like this.

Speaking of the Halle Building, there's some work going on inside the retail spot on the east side on Euclid closest to the Windham Hotel entrance. There used to be an Italian eaterie there, I believe. I'm not sure what they're doing. They've been at it for a couple months.
