  1. I can't wait for the bowling alley to be open. That'll be fun! I did that in a similar place in NYC, and it was awesome. I bet it'll be a little cheaper here.
  2. That person who wrote that snarky comment in the Freep is probably from Cleveland. edit: And I wonder if she lives in wonderful Shelby Township.
  3. hahaha. My dentist is in there! He's awesome, and his office is actually pretty nice. But that's all because somebody is good at decorating. They'd need to do some major modifications if they want to make that place a high-traffic office. The elevators are like coffins and the security people are HORRIBLE. Who thought that new metal crap was a good idea?
  4. What's with these dirtbags? Sometimes, stuff like this just gets me so mad. I don't get what makes these teenagers want to live such horrible, bottom-feeding lives. This is why families move to Solon, etc. It, in my opinion, is unacceptable that gunfights happen anywhere, especially a school: Man shot outside Heights High The Plain Dealer 4:15 p.m. Cleveland Heights - Police are looking for three young men accused of shooting an 18-year-old Bedford man after a fight in a school parking lot. A arrest warrant was issued for Damar Barney, 18, of Cleveland Heights, for attempted murder and attempted robbery charges. Barney is accused of pulling a 9mm handgun on Leonard Maxwell, 18, and shooting him twice Thursday outside Cleveland Heights High School, Police Chief Martin Lentz said. ... By Damian G. 5. At this point, I don't even care anymore what they do to that building. I just hope they replace it with something that isn't a piece of garbage. At least they ruled out the Detroit-based architects. I didn't like their choices at ALL. I figure they'll knock it down. I think the average person thinks it's ugly. Not enough support to keep it. edit: What, is this a trick? How is that Cleveland firm supposed to compete with the New York firm? I'm looking at both of their sites... Cleveland http://www.rpmadison.com/id33.htm New York http://www.kpf.com/main.asp The New York firm blows the Cleveland one out of the water.
  6. This IS interesting. Sounds good to me!

Wow, that IS impressive, actually. In Port Huron about two hours away, they have the same size population but there aren't any historic, tall buildings like that. What is the history of that town? Did the population used to be larger? I know Port Huron has pretty much always been about 35,000~ from the start.
  8. They've spent $28 million!!!!???? UHH. No wonder nothing ever gets done around here. I saw Tim Hagan on TV last night calling the clergy who oppose casinos "hypocrits" because they do bingo at churches. Brilliant minds at work.
  9. Ha- you probably didn't recognize it because like me when you saw them break ground there you assumed it would be something cool. Alas. Yeah, right by St. Marks. And KMart. And about 6 Starbucks. I wish my new apartment budget had been as big as MTS's friend. :( I think I saw a rendering on a poster or something and thought it would be awesome. Is that the place where Esquire recently had their "ultimate bachelor pad" or something like that? LOL. I saw where MY apartment budget was going to put me in NYC, which is why I moved back to Cleveland. I've got expensive taste. Give me the Upper West Side or give me Lakewood, ;) edit: btw, that K-Mart is wack. I bought a Mets hat there for $12, and it was definitely not Target quality! I just bought it to get people to leave me alone about my Indians crap. No way I was wearing Yankees garbage.
  10. Grade my response to this blog discussion... "Chris" at the end of the comments section proposes that our lakefront hasn't been developed because of the southwesterly breezes (as Mark Nolan would say:). He says that the wind makes the lake areas of downtown uninhabitable. I'm not schooled in urban design, so maybe you guys have better answers, but the idea that it's THE WIND that's holding us back just sounds like craziest thing I've ever heard. In Minneapolis they have space heaters for your car and all the buildings are connected so you don't have to go outside in the winter, right? They seem to be doing pretty well for themselves!! http://www.brewedfreshdaily.com/2006/10/04/positive-reinforcement/
  11. ^^ Lord in heaven! I guess I know what I'm writing this weekend!
  12. Don't be raggin' on my Stouffer's lausagna and mac and cheese! That's perfect bachelor food!
  13. BOO! I lived on 10th and Broadway during the summer of 2004 and that building was getting built then if I remember correctly? That's over by St. Mark's Place, right? Ugly.
  14. All right, you tell those Columbus naysayers I've heard about enough out of them! Anyone who opposes this doesn't get it! Adding streetcars is just another way Columbus can set itself apart! Plus I want to be able to stay at a hotel and go all over the place without driving
  15. I'm a product of my father. We've always lived in old houses, but he is so O.D.D. that when he works on things, he has to make sure it is in PERFECT condition, like brand new ;) I can't help it! I'm like Danny Tanner now. Edit: Also, have you seen the National City building all light up pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month? It's pretty impressive, imo. I wish they'd light up the building like that all the time.
  16. w28th's criticism is of the selection of designer, not of a proposed design, so I don't think its premature or unfair in any way. Gwathmey is uneven at best. See, e.g., the hideous vertical suburban office park (which is actually residential) that now blights my former 'hood at http://www.archpaper.com/images/Gwathmey.jpg. Where is that? In New York?
  17. Hey, I NEVER said the Metro Detroiters I talked to wanted to move to Cleveland. They LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE (I have never seen such statehood adulation) LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Michigan. They just weren't so stoked about the actual city of Detroit.
  18. WOW, MayDay proved that there ARE people working up there! That's pretty impressive. I think all the buildings downtown need powerwashed to get all the grime off of them.

I got into a little bit of a disagreement today with people that made me so mad. The basic gist is, I couldn't convince them that moving downtown and back into Cleveland is a good thing and that there are awesome things happening inside the city. I generally shrug this stuff off, but I've noticed that all my life growing up in NEOhio, every opinion I've ever had that's reasonable on this forum or anywhere else in the country is CRAZY in Akron/Cleveland. "WoaH! Living downtown? Are you crazy? Putting stores there? That'll increase traffic! Who wants to go there to shop, anyway? And where will people park?! It's dirty downtown. There will never be stores down here again. What's the big deal about old buildings? They get dirty." That's the kind of talk that drives people away! It's like a kid saying they want peanut butter and jelly every single day because it's what they like. And then the thing that REALLY gets me is, these same people go to New York and come back talking about how great it is there. Ahhh! How are we supposed to fix THAT?! Maybe I'm too close to all this stuff somehow. I'm living on the edge of Cleveland planning ahead the next few years, thinking about what downtown will be like and whether I will be able to afford it. Meanwhile, it's almost like certain people are waiting for failure so they can gloat. That's just not healthy!
  20. I saw that building on a Discovery Channel show about the planned "Sky City" building that will hold 140,000. That thing was gross. I like urbanism, but that futuristic thing was a little too freaky for me.
  21. Yeah, that Detroit map is rather pathetic. When I worked in Michigan, I interviewed a popular Detroit radio DJ who lived downtown. He said that Detroit was coming around, but it wasn't a rebuilt city like Cleveland. I thought that was nice praise. But it's more likely an explanation of how bad of shape downtown Detroit really is. Here's another little story. I spoke with a Detroit-area marching band director about his band performing in the Detroit Thanksgiving Day parade, which is a very nice, big parade that is very impressive. "We didn't even feel in danger at all" they guy said to me. I was a little stunned. I wouldn't have even THOUGHT of being in danger during a Thanksgiving Day Parade!
  22. DaninDC convinced me! I wasn't even thinking about the full impact of putting a monster skyscraper on Public Square. If they do in fact build something new, I'd like to see a design that really knocks my socks off, though, especially considering where it could be located. The article sort of makes it sound like Public Square is not the leading contender right now. But maybe they don't even know.

Cool idea!! I'd be interested in doing something. Personally, I'd like to improve the landscaping downtown but as we're going into fall, this is probably not such a good idea. I need to think about this...
  24. Go big or go home!! =)

KJP, thank you for bringing issues like this to light. I never, ever would have known about these things or understood their importance. Are our leaders doing enough to make sure we don't lose out to other cities? Who are the point people on this to write to?
