Greater Columbus COTA News & Discussion
Because it's America. People in this country insist on building everything from the ground up rather than finding what works in similar situations and cloning that, partnering with them or working with the outside organization that has already solved the issue.

Columbus Rickenbacker International Airport
That's kind of a shame but I can see why they are doing it. Nationally the Y used to keep a lot of land used for campgrounds, motocross tracks, fishing and whatnot but I don't think that's their main focus anymore. At $1.5 million, the 56 acres will get $26,785.71 per acre, which is a lot of money. The hippies/layabouts/paranoid Boomers that have parked their RVs on the site long term might get cranky though.

I mean, as long as you don't want to be Berkshire-Hatawahy (which it's fine if you do) you don't want share prices to be that high because it deters individual investors -- especially small-time ones. Releasing more shares is less drastic than a split.

I remember going to a Parade of Homes in the early '90s in Gahanna and people were like "My God, this house is $252,000!" I remember another one was $180K and people were more open to that.

^The last thing most NIMBYS know about is that kind of stuff. They only know what they like: setbacks, low-rise, grass, single-use, the '60s.

If you go back to when GM first talked about it, it's 65 years.

Electric Cars
All the car companies have had to back off on their autonomous claims. This was evidenced at CES (now an important auto show) where car company reps from the old guard were much more forthcoming (or at least clammed up) regarding the fact that the tech just isn't going to happen any time soon. The difference is that Musk's previous promises were so much more outlandish than everyone else's. The older companies still bring up autonomy often in general, but that's done to fool people into thinking they are tech so that if they have a bad quarter or year that they will be allowed to lose money. And that they will eventually bring the future. Musk on the other hand still claims things are still "just a few months out" and people still believe him. Don't forget about the Driverless Cars thread:

I lived next to some tracks in for a year and barely noticed them. No horns though. Remember, if there's train tracks that means you live in the important part of town.

More on the Obetz Sheetz development from the Southeast Messenger: "About 13.8 acres from eight parcels of land are set to be annexed into Obetz next month as part of a larger e-commerce development area. The total planned district area is roughly 43 acres from 14 parcels, located at the intersections of Toy Road, Alum Creek Drive and Bixby Road... The first consists of 8.8 acres that will serve as a fueling station with a convenience store and fast food. The second subarea has just five acres that will house Sheetz, also a convenience store and fast food option." https://www.columbusmessenger.com/obetz-preps-for-new-commercial-district-annexation.html

Columbus: Downtown: RiverSouth Developments and News
There needs to be no or very little loss of business at the CVS for other retailers to say the DGX was a success. Otherwise it's a zero-sum game that no other retailers want to play.

It's the opposite of the "Donut Tour". Donut Tours hit the coasts, maybe Chicago or Detroit, Toronto or Montreal and somewhere in Texas. They're popular with bands that want to play the U.S. but maximize their earnings potential by avoiding cities that may or may not draw a lot of fans. The Stones, on the other hand, don't have to worry about people not showing up.
