  1. All of that unbridled M&A activity in the 1990s-2010s is why it's so difficult to get office jobs now. It used to be a sure thing to go to college then get an office job right away. Now people look at you like you want to be an artist or musician for a living if you tell them you're going for an office career instead of going into the trades.
  2. Americans and their expensive buildouts. Everything's a Hail Mary.
  3. TH managed to blitz the Columbus market during a decade-long pull-out from the local market by Dunkin'.
  4. When Tim Horton's was still a Columbus-based company they probably had their eyes on all of Ohio. Now that they aren't Ohio-based it probably got put on the back burner.
  5. In Cincinnati the track wouldn't have to be a bunch of boring 90 degree turns like a lot of street courses end up being -- including Chicago.
  6. This is indeed one of the main criticisms of Whole Language. Even highly experienced readers fall into this trap. I am also alarmed that we still have to tell people that 82% is "more than 8 in 10" but it sounds like it's S.O.P. I just read the first module in 10 minutes (while quoting) vs. the 33 minutes the audio takes -- which is why we shouldn't make people who want to read do without in favor of A/V and because TikTok is popular with young people.
  7. Oh good, it has transcriptions.
  8. I just don't want everything going to video/audio is why I asked. I'm no expert on this and I literally don't know how to do phonics since I was taught Whole Language the entire time and vastly prefer reading to video and spoken audio (but like hearing people speak in real life). Your response is not uncommon including from people on the Left.
  9. So they get better at the mechanics of reading. But does it make them like it more or will they just crave video and audio the entire time they're reading? When I hear Republicans push really hard for something like this I wonder if it drives kids to video and audio (where Republican media excels) and away from the written word (where Democrats and other leftists thrive). Look at it like work -- you're probably good at it but is it your favorite thing to do?
  10. Don't expect it to make money. Very few street races do. Governments have to open their wallets big time.
  11. This place is cool. I want to go back already.

There is a lot of interest in making sure protected bike lanes are a big part of LinkUS. I wouldn't be surprised to see an updated rendering with them in place.
  13. Unfortunately it's harder to finance buildings with retail because of Amazon.
  14. It matters more when an area is under-retailed so therefore the supermarket is the only place to buy basically anything except gas station items.
  15. Yeah small business owners are better at serving the college market than chains whose revenue is dependent on constant drive-thru traffic the vast majority of their other locations. SBOs are used to the time off whereas the low net-margin chain model can't handle it. I always think about how places like Hungry Howie's or Gumby's Pizza are really specialized in this field. IDK the UC equivalent of those though, maybe Mac's and Adriatico's? Not quite the same even though Adriatico's is at OSU as well. None of them have Happy Meals or make them open at 6AM to sell breakfast since in some states you can't be on the blue exit signs on the freeway unless you serve breakfast so all the locations have to. That's the kind of thing big chains have to deal with and small businesses don't.
  16. Pretty much every other supermarket is/was more fun than Kroger to go to. Bigg's, Remke, Big Bear (RIP), IGA. Not Giant Eagle though -- still boring. The whole thing is so boring.

Yeah sounds like a beer vs. liquor thing. More stores sell beer than liquor so the dispensaries are like liquor stores whereas the hemp stuff comes from convenience stores like beer does.
  18. In the '90s and 2000s schools went rabid trying to get as many commuter students as possible especially with night classes. Now that type of student is more likely to be an online student so you don't need freeways in and out of the campus areas anymore.
  19. So kind of like those flophouse conversions in the Bowery?
  20. I don't usually comment on programming decisions in this thread but the loss of WWCD has caused Alt105.7 to shift their music mix significantly. I hadn't listened to Alt105.7 in a few months since renovation projects slowed down at our properties and WWCD wouldn't come in on the radios at them. The change is quite drastic. They went from trying to compete with WWCD on music to much more of a Blitz-type station. Sure all three competed on stuff like Pearl Jam, Green Day and Nirvana but the Blitz wasn't playing Cannons and Alt105.7 wasn't doing much Bob Mould. Without WWCD listeners to try and pull from the amount of Nu-Metal skyrocketed on Alt105.7 and they have started playing a lot of Eminiem (which actually makes sense in some way considering how little radio play he gets elsewhere despite his stratospheric record sales). I realize mainstream radio is always going to push Nu-Metal since it is something Big Radio itself popularized (something "they made") but the abandonment of indie rock and "hipster stuff" really sticks out and shows how much influence WWCD had on the Columbus radio market while sometimes struggling to make ends meet.
  21. Cherry Street (which is basically an alley) will be closed to automobile traffic east of 4th Street from August 16th to October 13th for pedestrian and event activation. Dubbed the Cherry Pit, live music on weekends and possibly other events will take place in the space. Neighboring businesses include Dirty Frank's and 16-Bit and it is in a DORA. Hopefully it becomes permanent and acts as a model for other pedestrian zones in the city. https://downtowncolumbus.com/cherrypit/
