I have to admit that I like seeing a good lawyer fight on here. It's like, "Yeah! I'm watching lawyers battle it out for free!"
  3. That will be another 20 years because the people who make those location decisions in this part of the country right now are of the generation that is most likely to pray to the sprawl god.
  4. T&C never had any enclosed mallway.
  5. Trolls - people from places like Reddit find Noble amusing and keep voting for her. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the idiots actually cast a ballot for her in the primary. I could understand voting for Berns as he is at least affiliated with the Libertarian Party, but Noble literally seems mentally challenged. Oh no, that sounds like the ironic vote-casting phenomenon I fear that indicates the existence of self-absorbed people that think casing an ironic vote is hilarious.
  6. Well since even in NYC only about 40% of the metro area population lives in the city itself, and the number is more like 15%-20% in other areas, how major of a change is it if it's invisible to the bulk of the population? In NYC there's a lot of people who would like to live in the city but cannot afford to because there is an undersupply of housing in the city but a much larger supply of suburban development. That's the flip side of subsidies for suburban development -- it is often very inexpensive as compared to other choices because of the massive supply of it that is created.
  7. Yes, slowly over the course of 2005-2010, inventory tax, manufacturing machinery/equipment property tax and furniture/fixtures property tax were reduced then eliminated. Also, corporate franchise did the same and individual income taxes were reduced by 21% over the course of the period. But, the CAT (commercial activity tax) was initialized. It only applies to businesses with over $150,000 in revenue and if revenues are under $1M it is a flat $150. Of course these tax cuts have nothing to do with Kasich; he was working for Lehman Brothers and as a talking head then.
  8. Yeah, not just people who "have to". Well, it might be hard to see from well maintained suburbs like Westlake, Dublin or pretty much all of Cincinnati's burbs, but from rotted ones it isn't that hard. *cough* Rolling Hills Mall *cough* Westland area *cough* Middletown Especially if you don't find yourself in the center cities or melted down 'burbs at all, like people who live in Dublin and work at Easton. There's a good chance that they are so disconnected from anyone in poverty or twentysomethings if most of their free time is spent in wealthy 'burbs with children, teens and others in their 40-60s.
  9. Overdue for sure.
  10. I took the opposite approach lol, and ended up being semi-successful at it. It helped that my football team was small so that while I may have been the worst player in the history of the Maple Heights Mustangs to letter, that last part was important. Plus, dad went through second teen-hood about the time I went through my first, hence the best car in the senior class when he let me use it. Hence my take: the non-conformists largely chose to be that way and maintained a certain pride in it. Morrisey's line about the DJ "says nothing to me about my life" is in its own way just as narcissistic as any preening quarterback dating a cheerleader and "seeing" the hottest of the party girls on the side. "The totally horrible swing music revival was, by contrast, quite obviously constructed by the record industry because they bet that they could get a lot of girls to buy those records and go to those shows, and the nerdy nice guys would show up since they were fooled into thinking those girls in poodle skirts wanted nice guys." It was a case of "let's promote the opposite and hope it sticks so we can sell stuff. Annoying but benign. Aw yuck, I hate seeing stuff like that throw down in person. The flip side of that is seeing fat girls with terrible personalities prowl around metal venues trying to get with guys they otherwise had no chance with by using a passing amount of metal knowledge hoping the guy gets real sappy when he meets a girl who knows who the band Sodom is. But, that's dried up too since most metal venues have to be driven to, rockers have notorious transportation problems in the U.S. and it's really easy to get a DUI now. Mean but hilarious with a Maple High alumni on bass. In a way, that's the counterpoint of the guys who go to strip clubs by themselves. Man, Steel Panther cracks me up. On one of the linked videos on there, they invite Vinny Paul down to the stage and sum up Pantera's lyrics perfectly while he's on the way down.
  11. Again? *economic monster rages out* Now here's something we hope will really work... wait what are you doing? *long hook comes out and pulls Rocky off stage*
  12. The one on Olentangy is always bursting with nerds.
  13. I don't really like that kind of Sublime marketing, as in making your establishment sound like it is in a Sublime song. You know why the guy in Sublime was so mellow, carefree and happy-sounding all the time? He was a heroin addict!
  14. When I was growing up I was always told that the socialists & commies & the pinko Democrats would create a bland & soulless environment whereas the good conservative traditionalist Republicans would build a grand and beautiful environment. Ayn Rand seemed to think so. Nowadays it's the neoconservative convenient libertarian Republicans pushing for the drab spartan environment proposed previously by the commies. It is interesting. Whatever it is, if it doesn't have tires they don't want anything to do with it. But for something with tires the budget is unlimited. I'm not just talking about transit.

A buddy of mine used to work at a carryout in Portsmouth that sold a ton of those. One day they ran out of lighters, so my buddy suggested this lady buy some matches. She fired back with, "You can't smoke crack with matches!"
  17. There's still dorms like that at some schools, except they've got wi-fi. Some schools just skipped over the phone thing by handing out cell phones. At Marshall they built new dorms back in 2005 without any wired communication, just cell phones and wi-fi. I don't know if they were wired for cable TV. One problem with giving everyone kitchens is that some tend to go nuts "playing house", loading up on all the kitchen equipment and dishes/silverware they had at Mom & Dads. If they haven't been exposed to the thrift store (a lot of them that come from consumption-oriented areas haven't) then the credit card gets burnout marks on it from outfitting the place. Even at the thrift store you can wind up broke if you try to own everything you had around back at the McMansion. And at UC instead of the thrift store being a hop, skip and a jump away like it is at a lot of other schools, it's way over there on Mitchell hiding in a bunch of warehouses. I never saw the number of college kids that you'd expect to see in there as compared to the Goodwill on High St. the VoA on Indianola or the Goodwills in Portsmouth. Has another one opened up closer to UC that I don't know about? I have no idea about the status of the old Sears at University and Reading, but you'd think there'd be some potential there. I'd also like to see what that place looks like inside right now.

kjbrill, are you saying we should spend billions on roads in case one day maybe "conjestion" might make people want to live in these areas with no jobs? Did you ever think that perhaps you look at "conjestion" differently that other people, in that it causes more of a reaction to you than the general population? People willfully put themselves in "conjested" situations all the time because they feel that they are worth it. Or else no "conjestion" would ever occur! "Conjestion" = economic activity

There are around 100-200 municipalities in the state that collect that sort of tax. Bexley is another.

A website where people drool over pictures of the old road.

But are road projects responsible for those jobs?

All of Appalachia has been carved up with roads that have created little discernible economic development except allowing coal tricks to drive faster. So the Portsmouth Bypass is going to be the magic road that finally turns Appalachia around? They've tried that thousands of times already!
