Think Tanks: Are They Really What They Say They Are?
I picture think tanks as places where they brainstorm ideas on how to manipulate the populace into taking on certain political ideals.

Bexley: Developments and News
I used to live right by here on Sheridan. Those apartments are in really high demand because the kids that live in them get to attend Bexley schools. Even the really crummy '50s units that line those two little streets are coveted.

People talk about fast food being bad, but I guarantee these gigantic, rich fast casual portions are worse for people. All those calories and carbs.

Reducing Surface Parking Lots - Tax Land, Not Buildings
This is how we wound up with a lot of empty lots in Columbus. The property owner who owned the land in the Short North at the NE corner of High and 5th where Out of the Closet is going in (former Shell station) was paying less than $500 a year in property taxes when there was nothing on the site.

I always thought that the reason Pizza Hut did well during the '80s and '90s is that Pizza Huts were really cool to be inside back then. Certainly not because of the pizza itself. Then they went and changed 'em to be boring inside. Maybe they'll do retro '80s Pizza Huts to save the company.

As if today's college kids give a crap about the '50s. I sure as hell hope that when I'm in my 70s that everything revolves around imagery from my and all the other '80s kids' childhoods -- but somehow I don't see that happening. We've been forced to look at pictures of old-timey gas stations with attendants in white suits, the milkman tipping his hat at old laides, kids skating around on those skateboards with the crate on the front and people on sunday drives in Buicks all our lives instead of the cool old blocky purple Decepticons and Heathcliff beating up the fish dealer that we actually want to see.

I'm surprised that Tampa has fewer hotel rooms than Columbus, Tampa being a major league city in the State of Florida.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Interesting. I wonder if something similiar might be possible in Cincinnati. Basically, if uptown wants their connector bad enough, they could vote for funding it without angering other neighborhoods who don't see the direct benefit of better transit. Back when Mark Miller was being a semi-rational human being, one thing he said (on my radio show) was that property owners along the route should pay for the streetcar by having a special district that would pay higher taxes in exchange the benefit of having the streetcar. While it's not a bad idea, it would be impossible for such a a district to generate enough revenue to pay for the upfront capital investment. Maybe the district would be used to pay for just the operating expenses? I sure wouldn't mind paying a little extra in property taxes to fund the operation of a streetcar right outside my front door. That was the plan in Columbus before the project got the axe.

Indeed, you can't really compare "pick 9" City Council results vs. one-on-one election results without being very, very good at statistical analysis.
