  1. One time, I got invited to a wedding on Straight St. I was running late, so I didn't look it up on the internet, figuring I'd just look at my map once I got to King's Island at a gas station (I was coming from Columbus). That's when I realized that there are 5 or 6 Straight Streets in Cincinnati. The wedding had already started by this time, so I couldn't call anyone and texting was out since everybody I knew was in the wedding party. I knew it wasn't on the Straight St. off Central Parkway, but that left ones off Reading, Smith, in Norwood, in Terrace Park and in Montgomery. And they all had churches on them! Of course the last one was a charm, making me fashionably late.
  2. It's hard for me to tell if an 1800s prison could be effectively reconfigured into something useful for public or semi-public use in the United States. Sure, I wouldn't have a problem with curved walls that turn into ceilings, low ceilings, narrow halls that are critical to the structure, steps everywhere and whatnot (neither would Europeans or other overseas friends). But here in the good 'ol U.S. of A. they could probably come up with 9000 reasons why it wouldn't be allowed and was too expensive to fix -- such as that it would be hard to use a Rascal or Hoveround to navigate the buildings. If the buildings had been in constant use rather than abandoned in 1984 it would have been easier. Do keep in mind that a lot of the materials were saved and moved to a big yard somewhere... so maybe someone will get creative and put them to good use.

I visited the area where the casino was supposed to be in the Arena District on my motorcycle the other day -- at the end of Nationwide Boulevard, right? I hadn't been through there since before the Pen came down, if ever. Wow, yea that's definitely a place for offices or something like that. Simultaneously esoteric and mysterious, that stretch of Nationwide has seemly seen little action since Spring-Sandusky cut it off in the 50s or 60s with its unimproved railroad overpasses and rubbed-off traffic markings. The buildings looked like something out of Roger Rabbit (Columbus really doesn't have much of that type of development left). One building even still said Dublin Rd. on it. That made me wonder what that stretch was called between the time Dublin Rd. was moved and when it was dubbed Nationwide Blvd., if anything else.
  4. Never as long as more people in the public eye lie to them rather than tell them the truth.
  5. ^ That's something that annoys me pretty badly about auto dependency. You go somewhere, but you always have to wind up back at the car no matter where it is. If you could just say "K.I.T.T., I need you buddy" and have the car show up to where you are, the automobile could provide more of the freedom of which it is always boasting. But it can't.

New trucks bore me, but old trucks without all those stupid "features" have lots of character. Basically, trucks from back when people who actually needed trucks bought them. Oh, and the old school monster trucks that were real trucks with vikings airbrushed on the sides: TNT All American Houston Astrodome 1988 - Bigfoot vs Master of Disaster

Another concern for the NBA is that fans feel that there's been too much talent dilution due to the number of teams in the league. The large number of relatively mediocre players has make the average game less interesting. These are the kind of things that work into casual fans' subconscious, anger knowledgeable fans and bring out the haters in sports. There's a lot of people who would like to see contraction besides unprofitable teams creditors.

Enterprise has worked out well for me and my buddies for long trips back when we only had big ass trucks and needed something easier on gas. But we did have to select a location that would let us take the car out of the area. Not all of them would let us do it. We always told them ahead of time that we'd be taking the car out of the region they specified (for Cincinnati it was the Tri-State -- not sure if that meant we could drive it from Ashtabula to Paducah or had to stay in the Cincy metro). This was a few years back, so I may not be up on current policy. Since several of us now have small sports cars, we'd go back to them for small cars that have more interior space for long trips.

My roommate was telling me about it. But the details are more along the lines that the Oklahoma owners have to pay the city $30M (in addition to the $45 million they've already paid to the city) if a new arena goes up or significant renovations are done to the old one by the end of 2013. You get some investors to chip in with a $75M head start, a building paid for by the gov't and Seattle's back in business pretty quickly. http://www.seattlepi.com/news/article/Sonics-are-Oklahoma-City-bound-1278241.php
  10. The Dimebag Darrell estate and Phil Anselmo must have pitched in to take that Pantera to a new level.
  11. I bet American Can wouldn't have shut down if they had shortened their name to the much-wittier AmeriCan.

To provide another reason why not (rather than continuing the speculation), Seattle has a deal with the NBA that they have to get a team back within a certain time frame (5-10 years, I think). If a team is looking to move, they might have to move to Seattle if the NBA doesn't do another expansion.

It used to be that when you got a cake it had that really awesome dense frosting that got a hard layer on top. Now it's all that whipped BS that just slides right off.

I bet their tire bill is impressive. Motocross tires only last about 100 miles on the street.

You know, I bet there's people out there that know how to get on the internet today using a Sinclair. Probably in England.
  17. Watching 'em bang away at this thing right now. Indeed this is an interesting little alcove. Right in the middle of duplex/fourplex and large apartment complex country lies a couple of hidden streets full of small budget-oriented bungalows and concrete block houses. There's even a small former church and a community building with a park. Although some of the structures are a bit worse for wear, you can tell that this was a small community of its own at one point. Word has it that it was housing for workers at the small carnival grounds that once lied where Kroger is now. If you've ever been through the seemingly Appalachian or even Ozarks-like neighborhoods east of Groves and Hamilton, west of 62 on the Near Southwest Side(?), southwest of Brendon Woods or west of Hamilton Road between Winchester and Refugee, you'll kind of get the idea. This neighborhood in its current form may not be long for this world, though.
  18. Dunno if TKILTBAG management thinks about that kind of stuff.
  19. That sounds extremely wasteful, unless we are going to collect rainwater to refill it with. That's not how water wells work.
  20. Hrmm... for a second I thought maybe the signage was inspired by goatse.cx? Hmmm, I'd heard of that site before and felt it was best avoided, though I'd never actually been there. Seems like it's changed a bit. ha ha

What is the protocol for saying the word "quim" on broadcast TV before 10pm? Is it OK to say it as long as it's followed by something else such as "bob" or is it not covered? Perhaps the producers haven't read that many '70s Hustler stories.

Hell no, I'd never cook again if my meals were covered. That was one of the best things about college -- never having to keep a bunch of food around or having to eat the same things over and over again to keep from having to throw a bunch of food out.
  23. They're also easy to put them where you want in traffic due to their small size and excellent handling. That's especially important on Cincinnati's narrow streets with lots of blind curves. If you drive one up the Cut-in-the-Hill or that blitz out of the FWW tunnel though, you might as well tuck in behind the semis in the right lane 'cause you're not going to go any faster than them.
  24. Just a couple off the top of my head: 1. A lot of people in Columbus are relatively easy to please. 2. Since Columbus' population is highly transient, many people think that they're going to be leaving soon. There's a ton more to it than that, but those are some quickies.
  25. That makes sense to us as grown-ups and we as adults wouldn't mind that. But I bet a lot of 20-year-old kids would just quit college under that kind of austerity and boredom. Of course that's their problem, not ours.
