Pleas tell me the tagline for that one was "Transforum -- more than meets the eye."

Cincinnati: Interstate 75
I meant more in general rather than in this specific situation.

Cincinnati: Interstate 75
Ohio is terribly un-progessive when it comes to stuff like this. Ohio has traditionally overbuilt everything just for peak. We've been terrible at differentiating speed limits and lane use for peak and off-peak.

>There are, incidentally, a lot of cars and trucks being stripped in the West Chester industrial parks. Many warehouses are having the catalytic converters ripped out from under their delivery trucks and vans, and cars left overnight (often by salesmen) are getting hit. Enquirer is not covering this< Columbus media focuses on suburban/exurban crime much more than even two years ago because they've found out that there's a lot of it and it sells papers/gets ratings. Sounds like Cincy isn't doing that yet.

Cincinnati Skywalks
I was living in an unwalkable area outside Huntington WV when signed up for an internship in D.C. During that 3-month internship I lost 25 pounds because I was able to walk places, use rail transit and eat city food. When I went back to Huntington, I moved to a part of town where I could walk to work and class. The weight stayed off. It didn't come back for 4 years until I started having to drive to Florence from Oakley for work and was stuck with mall food (man cannot survive on Stouffer's alone). When I moved back to Columbus I was living in Bexley and working in New Albany. The fat stayed on. When I got the opportunity to live near work (now in 5xNW) I eagerly took it. And whaddaya know? I lost significant weight again. I can walk to many things and BMX to work often. I hate running. I hate lifting. Gym culture seems foreign to me. I suck at sports. But I like purposeful walking (not doing it "just to do it") and biking.

Yes, those who live in urban "food deserts" without decent food close by do run into trouble. The "ghetto" or "'hood" usually often doesn't have the kind of amenities that lead to good walkability.

Uh, urbanites? People in walkable areas tend stay healthy for a much longer potion of their lives than ones in unwalkable areas. Sprawl effectively cuts off your legs. Indeed, people don't have the time to just browse around a mall these days. The move to a 24/7 service economy has destroyed they idea of a 9-5 job for many, and all that time spent driving has eroded the free time of Americans.

Cincinnati: General Business & Economic News
I know I prefer scraping ice and snow off my car in the winter and having my car heat up to literally 200 degrees inside in the summer -- not. Another symptom of TV's "Stranger Danger", whose real goal was to keep people inside watching TV instead of increasing public safety.

Why are young people driving less?
Regarding the Japanese earthquake last year (and some flooding in Malaysia, correct?), did the shortage of new cars steer people toward recent used cars, driving an increase in demand for them?

ODOT Policy Discussion
We'd use the Turnpike twice a year when I was a boy, once to go to Florida at Christmas and once in the spring to go to P.T.L. (Heritage USA) so that my folks could see Jim and Tammy Faye televangelize and give 'em money. The Turnpike was always backed up in the '80s before the dualization was completed, both due to construction and due to the nasty merges required when going back to the two-lane sections. I loved it because of the scenery but my dad raged over all the back-ups. And he hated side tolls, so we'd always eat at the service plazas. The first time we went through there after Memorial Tunnel was bypassed I was super bummed, but my dad was like "Hell yeah!" and floored it. That cut is pretty intense.

Sherman, did you go to the Turnpike 50th Anniversary party at Tamarack in 2004? It was fantastic. They had Greenbrier food, a bunch of old Governors were there, a guy who drove the entire length of the Turnpike twice a day since it opened spoke and they showed the Turnpike documentary (which was sweet, dunno if you've seen it). In the early '80s, they showed the relocation of Paint Creek (near Cabin Creek, I think) on Mr. Wizard's World. I thought it was gnarly as a 4-year-old.

There is a pic of me (or a link to one) lurking on this site somewhere. Hint: it's in a Columbus thread, not a photo one.

Favorite Music At The Moment?
Two-stroke street bike guys love that Liz Phair vid because of the Yamaha RD in it. OK, yes, this song "rips off" Master of Puppets and a few other Metallica songs a little. But I guarantee you'll never think of the word "elimination" the same way again. E... LIMINATION!

ODOT Policy Discussion
I remember people coming unglued in West Virginia when they re-issued 50-year bonds for the WV Turnpike after the 50-year bonds that funded its initial construction matured. But of course, being a Turnpike it has an income stream.

Dead Malls Photo Assembly
A mall full of a bunch of different churches can't turn out well. Hope they can get along.
