Cincinnati: General Transit Thread
Good to see someone be able to talk positively about the streetcar (at the end) without getting their balls busted.

Columbus: Random Development and News
GCrites replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionYou definitely know when you've left Bexley or Grandview and entered Columbus proper. Roadside trees disappear, parking lots triple in size, setbacks do the same and the architecture degrades into post-war boxiness. Infill between the older parts of Columbus and these two suburbs (which were exurbs before the infill) mostly took place after the war.

Downtown White Plains & MNRR Harlem line
Kind of reminds me of parts of Arlington Virginia.

The anti-rail hitmen are still out there
^Back in 1990 to 2002, Highway construction/maintenance materials and labor were much cheaper and inflation had not eroded purchasing power of the flat-rate-per-gallon gas taxes. Therefore, fuel taxes collected in those days were much more capable of maintaining the highway system than they are today.

A lot of these towns in the "diagonal roads" part of the state get passed over due to the low population densities of the surrounding areas and the fact that not many people pass through them on the way to other towns. This part of the state saw Virginians as its first white settlers; they were used to diagonal roads at home.

Urban Ohio "Picture Of The Day"
But I CAN still walk to the downtown area, right?? Where is this? I'm sure they have an extensive complete streets program in place as well :-D What an intelligent town. Seems that instead of dealing with a couple bored teenagers on skateboards or BMX bikes individually, a bunch of car potatoes decided to ruin street life for everyone. And they wonder why people snap and shoot up public places in this country.

Sometimes hitting the button will give you a longer green cycle to allow groups of pedestrians to pass. There's one intersection near my house where traffic will back up around 5pm as workers leave Capital University. The green is only long enough to allow four cars though normally, but if a pedestrian uses the button to cross, 10 or more cars can go. When I'm driving the opposite direction, I see those cars backed up for a couple blocks and think "A passenger should just hop out of one of the cars and hit the button to end this." But of course, every car just has one person in it.

But the plan drew immediate fire from majority Republicans in the House of Representatives, who said building high-speed rail requires private investment rather than a government plan. Biden, who estimated he has ridden Amtrak trains between Washington and his home in Wilmington, Delaware, some 7,900 times, made a strong pitch for rail transportation to enable the United States to compete and lead internationally. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20110208/pl_nm/us_usa_transport_rail

Cincinnati: Monthly Parking in Gateway Quarter
Why'd they do away with the parking around Washington Park? For construction of the garage underneath the park?

Columbus: Weinland Park Developments and News
Obviously, we've known about this project for a long time. It's still good to see Kroger avoid a nasty street setback and build a building that interacts with its surroundings. When they built a new Kroger in downtown Portsmouth during the mid/late '90s, they didn't set it back from the street, but left the street facing side with no windows and instead painted pictures of normal Main Street activity on it. Unfortunately, they've shown signs of wanting to do a suburban-style store on Short Vine in Cincinnati, an area that doesn't deserve that treatment. - opinion

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
I don't think it's real. It almost looks like a shot of Earnest Borgnine during an episode of Airwolf with a woman from a '70s movie photoshopped in.

Grove City, Ohio
Where in Milford? I don't consider McMansions upscale and the market won't either when it's all said and done.

Grove City, Ohio
^ Kinda close. Grove City's topography is a lot different. Milford is also overall more upscale than Grove City.

Governor John Kasich
Why should Kasich care about making it a good state for young people? They don't vote as much as other age brackets and when they do it's often against people like him. Plus, they don't have very much money. We're useless to him. If he does irreparable damage to his and his party's reputation, he doesn't care. He'll be out of office by the time that happens.

Grove City, Ohio
Most of the really depressed parts of what people call "Grove City" are actually on the SW side of Columbus, i.e. areas north of 270 off of Harrisburg Pike. That's the "Grovetucky" to which people refer. The Southwest Side gets lumped in due to the fact that it shares the school district with Grove City (Southwestern City Schools) and that people don't know their geography that well.

Forest Park: Forest Fair Mall / Cincinnati Mills Redevelopment
A few years back, an old friend tried for like half and hour to drive us up to Metropolis. I was living in Corryville at the time and had already been drinking so I didn't want to drive. I was thinking, "If I want to go to a rough bar, I think I'll stick to ones around here, not the one all the way up at the mall."

Pet Peeves!
As someone who grew up in Groveport, I am obligated to make fun of anything involving cAnal Winchester. Leaving stuff out and not locking your doors is part of Canal culture -- it's a source of pride for them that "Things are safe here" and has been for a long time. The problem with that is people haven't been able to do that safely since the '80s. Stuff gets stolen or broken into all the time there becuase of their trusting nature. The "Every man for himself" and "Gimmie gimmie" cultures that are prevalent today have made their open door culture obsolete.

Governor John Kasich
It depends on the type of policy. Term life policies work like car insurance and merely exist to protect spouses and minors from the fallout regarding death of the insured, while most other types fall under the category of permanent insurance which do have characteristics of an investment. Some invest part of the policy premiums into mutual funds, which obviously makes them investment vehicles that merely have higher fees to cover the cost of insurance but are still tax-advantaged.
