Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
If something like that is applied to the public sector it probably becomes a matter of policy rather than law.

The Dating Thread
^That'd be creepy today, but in the old days it was charming.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Interesting to note that it went into effect after most streetcar systems quit running, but of course it covers buses as well.

CNN's "in the middle" now. They have to include the religiosity of the status quo.

US Economy: News & Discussion
That WSJ article states that the office space market is showing signs of recovery. While it may be true that demand is increasing incrementally, the overall office space and commercial real estate market is set for a meltdown due to the overabundance of vacant suburban and urban office space both, in addition to retail space.

Columbus: LGBT-Friendly City
That area doesn't really have a name. It was dominated for so long by Union Station and the Pen that people just called it "by the Ohio Pen", "by Union Station" or today "by the Convention Center". If it did have a neighborhood name, it was lost when the tracks (of which there used to be many more) were moved from at grade to under a viaduct in the late 1800s. So, the area is simply part of Downtown.

Not a real surprise, I suppose.

Governor John Kasich
Perhaps Kasich is trying to get rid of the prevailing wage so that improving the 3C line is cheaper... not.

Handymen are in very high demand and have been for years. Few people can perform quality work across disciplines these days. Everyone's a "drywall guy", a plumber, a flooring guy or some other specialty. Anyway, you definitely get what you pay for when it comes to labor pools -- up to the point when people are paid a lot AND it's really tough to fire them. There is a sweet spot there, but it's different for each situation and management must find it themselves. An arbitrary rate (such as the prevailing wage) moves the price away from equilibrium.

Me and some buddies did the Submarine Galley for Christmas one time; 2006 I think. Fun.

That apartment reminds me of a hotel room at Heritage USA (PTL) in 1988.

Columbus: Random Development and News
GCrites replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionThe problem with everyone thinking "Short North -- the only place to start a business" is that it's not always the best place for every type of business, especially someone's first business. The rent can be high and it's not the place to sell certain product lines. That's why there are always quite a few empty storefronts there -- it's easy to throw a gutter ball there. It's myopia -- people don't know that there's money to be made elsewhere.

Why are young people driving less?
I thought the first one was the PA Turnpike; I just wasn't positive.

GCrites replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI agree. It's just that you weren't all that specific about which neighborhoods you felt deserved help in your initial post -- so I wasn't sure if you were talking about the types of places you mentioned in the second post or stuff like the Far East Side, Linden and parts of the SE side that have much less potential.

Columbus: Random Development and News
GCrites replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & Construction^ A lot of those areas people left are suburban-style developments even though they are in the city proper. Suburban-style development with few amenities that lack "good schools" and still are perceived to have "big city problems" are never going to be in high demand.

Peak Oil
^ Truckers will really fight an increase in the Ohio gas/diesel tax. They have quite the powerful lobby.
