Shaker Heights: Van Aken District Transit Oriented Development
I unfortunately agree that VAD is duplicative to Shaker square but in car oriented societies we are over retailed. My hope is shaker square closes the thru lanes and is able to use the funding to stop the bleeding. In the long term I hope shaker square can have more every day tenants like Dave’s while VAD can be more of the draw to pull orange/gates mills people in via North Star, the music, etc.

Ohio Education / School Funding Discussion
^that just brings home the entire point of private schools which is to self-segregate and not have to interact or engage with all of society. I wonder what people tell their kids when (and if) the conversation occurs. “why don’t I go to the school down the street mom?” I personally have no problem with others choosing private school, but I don’t want to pay for them to learn about “creationism” and their Jesus.

Ohio GOP / Republican Party
Lol please use caution when using your individual life and anecdotal references to extrapolate out to the broader population. I went to OSU graduated in the past 10 years and I would say the majority of people I know left Ohio. Of those who were from Ohio originally, a lot moved to larger cities for various things (diversity, jobs, real city living, etc). The only (few) ones I’m aware of keen on staying around are those that are from and can’t wait to get back into their hometowns. Yikes I know. All of our “perspectives” are a grain of salt. regarding Ohio’s “demise”. I sure don’t think the socialism for the rural areas and super Christian people due to the political favorability is doing the state any good from a financial perspective. But it seems to be the playbook. Sure Ohio has a better cost of living (what area that doesn’t attract residents doesn’t?) but as someone who works remote and I’m the only person from the Midwest everyone tries to contain their laughter when I tell them I’m from cleveland and went to osu. Can’t really blame them tbh, as most of their assumptions are spot on.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
What a tone deaf and embarassing response. Maybe bc our culture subsidizes sprawl via a tax on us all (infrastructure, fossil fuel, and car dependency). Would encourage you to visit or study other first world countries/societies that prioritize humans.

Ohio Education / School Funding Discussion
LOL at the teachers union comment. Y’all hate every union except for the one that kills people. @jonoh81bless you for going back and forth with these self described “moderates” who pulled themselves up by their bootstraps, but will take the first handout for their kids religion class and school. What a bummer.

Ohio Education / School Funding Discussion
@Gramaryebut your lord answered your prayers and got rid of planned parenthood in Ohio. So can we now stop subsidizing your kids not wanting to go to schools with the other kids where they live? and the knowing better than the rest of us is a big Lol too @jonoh81captured it.

Ohio Education / School Funding Discussion
Thank you for correcting me, I do appreciate it. I guess we will have to agree to disagree that that taxpayers should have to contribute anything to any religious associated entity. It’s already bad enough that these churches pay no taxes themselves. Regarding the “anti-Christian” attitude, chill. The desantis demographic has turned this country into a bending over backwards to accommodate every Christian wish list item. As someone who grew up in a Christian home, i find this argument and victim playing (with no evidence listed) is unproductive. But in the end I’m on the hook for your kids to learn about your God. Yikes at our society.

Ohio Education / School Funding Discussion
Great I’m so glad we’re all on the hook for $90k in school vouchers for you. And the teachers of these private schools get paid crumbs, so it probably just goes to the church. in reference to our dialogue before, my comment was that private schools became popular once public schools started to integrate racially. You make a good observation that most communities are very hyper segregated by income, race, etc in our state. I wonder why that is… Imagine if we went to county wide schools in Summit, Stark, Hamilton, Cuyahoga, or Franklin counties. Would there be a higher demand for private schools and why? I guess the point I’m trying to make is education is “supposed to be” equal opportunity for all in this country. That is what public entities attempt to do. Defunding them via subsidizing private schools and their religious entities is ridiculous. If you want to choose private schools because your local public schools “just aren’t the right fit” that’s fine. The fact that we’re funneling $ into any religious institution, let alone ones that don’t have the best track record is … well very Ohio (and America).

Ohio Education / School Funding Discussion
Is that why people are going to private schools? Or is the the self segregating aspect? Or because we’ve defunded public schools in this country (and state) so much? Regardless, very telling and interesting response.

Ohio Education / School Funding Discussion
I’m very curious if you’re okay with schools mentioning Rosa Parks’ skin color? Or is the civil rights movement, mlk, etc too “woke” for the desantis crowd?

Ohio Education / School Funding Discussion
Lol Christianity. And it is a shame because the separation of church and state is critical. And why should Christianity be so superior to all other religions in terms of its prioritization in the above mentioned areas?

Ohio Education / School Funding Discussion
The fact that a single religion is so intertwined into our government and public schools is such a shame for our country at a federal and state level.

Cleveland: Immigration News & Discussion
While I would love to know more and have clarity on what you mean by “assimilate” and why I think there’s another focus. I can’t speak for others but nearly all of the immigrants (both documented and undocumented) in the various parts of the country I have lived and worked have been some of the best people I have ever met. I’m curious about others experiences including yours. it appears to me most immigrants come for the right reasons, provide a ton of value to our country (culturally, economically, etc) and hold our country to the ideals it was okay with when our ancestors all came over and stole land from the indigenous people.

Ohio GOP / Republican Party
The both sideism is probably very helpful when you want to rationalize your pre-determined beliefs especially when they run counter to actual (not alternative) facts.
-
Ohio GOP / Republican Party
Because the US Dems (which policy wise are very moderate on a global scale compared to other democracies) stormed the capitol. It’s MTG and tuckers party now. Look how at Vance’s progression.

Ohio GOP / Republican Party
Please stop acting like the majority (and base) of the gop isn’t hell bent on doing whatever to secure power. If it’s not things like this, it’s political violence, coups, screaming election fraud for every race they don’t win (even if others in gop on the same exact ballot win). This is the MTG party not the mitt Romney party and Ohio is no exception. Please don’t try to wash your hands and draw a line. They support mass income inequality, self segregation in schools, communities, etc, they are anti woman/lgbtq, and I can go on. But please go on to name one time trickle down economics has ever worked.

Ohio Congressional Redistricting / Gerrymandering
The sad part is every ballot measure that passed are issues supported by Dems, hated by GOP. This just shows that if you gave someone a scantron and asked them to check for/against on issues they’d align with todays US dem party by heavy margins even in Ohio. Goes to show the media hype and chaos plays into GOP hands and them suppressing vote and gerrymandering keeps them relevant.

East Palestine Train Derailment
Isn’t it ironic that the anti-science, defund the EPA, diesel truck driving, Ryan home living, climate change is fake, etc crowd is now concerned? Trump got rid of the electric brakes rule for trains carrying these hazardous materials and DeWine is doing god knows what but this is Biden’s fault. Lol
