  1. Very happy to see construction finally happening on this lot! It was such an eyesore when I moved back to Columbus from 2009-2011.

Absolutely love Seattle. For me, the only major negative is the lack of extensive rail transit. Otherwise I think it's a fantastic city. I visited last spring (late March/early April) and enjoyed myself immensely despite the generally cloudy & showery weather. They have some rather sweet neighborhoods, from Capitol Hill to Fremont to the U District to Ballard to South Lake Union to Queen Anne to downtown, there's plenty of areas to enjoy.
  3. Are the photos showing up for anyone? They're not loading when I view this thread, though I'm not getting any red X's either. Just blank space. It's odd because I posted this same thread on SSP & SSC using the exact same img tags and the photos are showing up on those two sites.
  4. A few weeks ago I traveled to Germany for work. I was able to head out a day early to tour Heidelberg on my own before taking the train down to Stuttgart for work. I was incredibly lucky with the weather… nothing but sunshine and above normal temperatures for my entire stay in Germany. Below are my photos from Heidelberg. I arrived just after sunrise on Sunday morning, so you’ll see a progression from quite sleepy streets to a town center filled with pedestrians. The grass was green, the flowers were blooming, the trees were sprouting their leaves, and the sun was shining. It’s a fantastic college town and I couldn’t be happier I selected this city to visit for my one free day from work! Heading to the Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof to catch an IC train to Stuttgart: On the train heading to Stuttgart: I’ll post my photos from Stuttgart (and nearby Sindelfingen) sometime in the next week or two.
  5. Winter's over, spring is here. People are spending more time at the park and what are they greeted with? An empty pit drained last fall for installation of a water fountain that still hasn't been constructed. What the hell are they waiting for? They had all winter to get this done and now when people are out & about enjoying the park, there's neither a fountain nor any water.
  6. White Plains looks pretty good to me. The fact it has a downtown rail station for convenient access right into the heart of Manhattan is even better!
  7. Absolutely love it!
  8. Looks like a new restaurant will be opening up sometime in the next month or two. It's located at the southwest corner of Buttles & High (very prime location!), directly south of Black Olive. The restaurants name is Two Fish Bistro and appears to be part of the Daeoh family of restaurants (of which Black Olive is also). Signs in the window say they're conducting interviews on Monday, January 3rd. One of my friends mentioned a couple days ago a new restaurant opening up a little further north... I think possibly in the space formerly occupied by the Rosendales restaurant at Hubbard & High. I haven't walked by that space in a couple weeks, so I'm not sure if they have signs indicating the name and scheduled opening.

You're lucky to be celebrating your one year anniversary of living in Chicago. It was one year ago this month that I had to leave Chicago for a new job elsewhere. While the job is good, I'm definitely not celebrating my one year anniversary. for the nice photos!
  10. Will you be driving to the law school or taking the bus? Generally you can find apartments in the Short North, Italian Village, and Victorian Village that are less than $800. It's a safe popular area for a lot of young people. Definitely check on Craigslist. Also, check out http://www.Metro-Rentals.com and http://www.Woodcompanies.com/Residential.
  11. There May Be ‘No Better Place,’ but There Is a Better Slogan EDIT: Corrected link

WGN has a news segment called "Cruising Illinois" in which reporter Julian Crews visits different areas throughout the state of Illinois. One of their episodes featured Galena and it certainly looked very unique, particularly for a location in Illinois. Great to see some photos now of Galena! The steep hills near the Mississippi River make for a particularly impressive setting.
  13. These fantastic photos make my heart ache! I miss Chicago so much. I'm two weeks away from a very *brief* visit.

The built form of that city is wonderful! Certainly the type that offers people the opportunity to be out & about walking around rather than needing to drive everywhere.

Oh wow, I hadn't heard about the storm damage. I know Edgerton very well. My mother grew up there and my grandparents still live there. I was just in town less than a month ago. It will be strange to go there in the future and not see this building anymore. I can remember as a child my mother taking me to the town's summer festival where they would have some carnival rides, festival food stands, and games set up on the grounds around the town hall. And considering it's one of the most noteworthy buildings in the town (the most noteworthy probably being the beautiful Catholic church), it will be an unfortunate loss. I'll have to ask my grandparents about it the next time I see them.
  16. My company needed to send me to Honolulu to do some work last week which I was more than happy to oblige. I left a cold snowy Ohio early on Saturday, February 27th and approximately 13 hours later, which included a delay in Phoenix due to the tsunami warning issued for the Hawaiian Islands, I was basking in the warm tropical breezes of Honolulu. :) Because this was a work trip, my free time was mostly limited to Sunday and Friday afternoon (as well as each evening). As this was my first trip to Hawaii, I have quite a number of Waikiki photos in this thread since that's where I stayed. Fortunately I made it to downtown Honolulu and the old historic district on the northwest edge of downtown on Friday afternoon to take plenty of photos. So enough talk, here are my photos. Views from my balcony when I first arrived at the hotel on Saturday evening. The view as seen the next morning. Sunday’s big headline… The view northeast from Ala Wai Blvd. Residential areas northeast of Kuhio Ave. Heading off to breakfast. Pay attention to the street here (Kuhio Ave) because I suspect this will be the preferred route for the future elevated rail line into Waikiki (it’s only planned to reach the edge of Waikiki at this point, but future expansion plans include Waikiki and the University of Hawaii Honolulu). A market full of trinkets stretching from Kuhio Ave. to Kalakaua Ave. It’s a tourist trap, but oh well. Diamond Head off in the distance with the Honolulu Zoo in the foreground. For someone like myself who was stuck dealing with a cold gray snowy winter, this truly was paradise. The water currents were still somewhat messed up from the tsunami the previous day, which not only made the water a little unsafe but also a little cooler from upwelling. So the beach wasn’t overly busy on this Sunday afternoon. Heading west along Kalakaua Ave. I took this photo for ColDayMan (I didn’t eat at any chains during the week except for McDonalds to try one of their banana pies). Looking south across a park toward the Hilton Hawaiian Village (Rainbow tower). The Hilton Hawaiian Village. Heading out back to catch the coverage of the US/Canada gold medal hockey match. Looks like others had the same thought as I did. I would estimate at least 40% of the crowd was from Canada. Needless to say they were quite happy just a short while later. Hot body alert! And again! Oh how I love the ocean! Heading back through the Hilton Hawaiian Village. The view from my balcony at night. Various views from the top of the Ala Moana shopping center parking garages. The view from my table at dinner one evening. This is what it looked like at the start of dinner. Near the end of dinner, this is the view I was treated to from my table. :-D Buckeye fans are everywhere! :-D The view from my table during lunch on Friday afternoon. The weather could not have been more perfect: 80 degrees with a wonderfully refreshing breeze. The Honolulu skyline as seen from H1 heading east toward downtown. Waikiki skyline as seen from the parking garages at the Ala Moana shopping center. The less touristy Ala Moana Park beach to the west of Waikiki. Beautiful day for a walk all the way from Waikiki to downtown Honolulu. Approaching downtown Honolulu. Aloha Tower on the downtown waterfront. Heading into downtown Honolulu. Historic contrasted with brutalism contrasted with glassy modern. Now for some gorgeous old buildings on the northwest edge of downtown. Heading into the heart of what I presume to be Chinatown (I seemed to notice a fair amount of references to Hong Kong). Heading back toward downtown. A plethora of brutalism. The addition on top isn’t anything to write home about, but damn this building is gorgeous. An old arcade! Onto the grounds of the Iolani Palace and the Hawaii Capital Historic District. This tree was astounding! The state seal of Hawaii hanging on the outside of the Capital building. While it pales in comparison to the Iolani Palace and other historic buildings in the area, the midcentury modern Capital building is still kind of cool. Especially nice is the open air center with the House of Representatives on one side and the Senate on the other side. Inside the open air center. Gay rights advocates outside the Capital. The Honolulu skyline as seen from the grounds of the Hawaii Capital Historic District. Other historic Punchbowl buildings. One final view looking back toward downtown. Mission Houses museum and grounds. Relaxing on the pool deck at my hotel before meeting up with my coworkers for dinner late Friday afternoon. I think the weather gods or Mother Nature are gay rights supporters considering the many many rainbows I saw during my 6.5 days in Honolulu. I saw more during that time than during my entire life combined. We headed off to the Hilton Hawaiian Village for dinner & drinks and also to take in the weekly Friday night fireworks display along the waterfront. This marked the end of my trip to Honolulu. I departed at 11:50pm on Friday night and arrived back in Ohio around 4pm on Saturday afternoon. Hope you enjoyed the photos. I certainly enjoyed being there! :D
  17. I've had these photos since October of last year; however I've only now finally gotten around to uploading them to my flickr account. The photos are all from the Short North/Italian Village/Victorian Village/Harrison West areas. As far as Columbus is concerned, I know this area tends to receive the most coverage, but I've never done my own photo tour. So here's my take on what I view as the best area of Columbus. (only very minor adjustments of the saturation... the colors really were this vibrant not only here, but in most of my photos) Hope you enjoyed the fall photo tour of my favorite area of Columbus. :)
  18. Another closing in the Short North - this time, Planet Smoothie. I'm disappointed. I just walked out my door to get a smoothie from there and its windows are covered in brown paper. *sigh* :(

I've been wanting to see a Hoboken photo thread, so thanks for posting this! Certainly looks like the best place to live in Jersey.
  20. I checked out the library on the afternoon of Sept 12th before the USC game that evening. I was impressed. Looked fantastic to me.
  21. Bah. I didn't realize Starbucks was closing the Short North location. I'd been craving a Pumpkin Spice latte all afternoon and was waiting for half time in the OSU game before heading there to get one. But then I arrived and found out the store was closed. So now I either have to head down to the arena district, up to the South Campus Gateway, or over near the King Dr/Olentangy River Road intersection. (yes I could go to Cup O' Joe or one of the other coffee shops in the neighborhood, but I was specifically craving a pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks)

I actually didn't have sweet dreams of Chicago last night because I had trouble getting to sleep in the first place. I couldn't stop thinking about Chicago after viewing this thread. Thanks a lot, ColDayMan! ;)

I'll be having sweet dreams of Chicago tonight when I go to bed. Two weeks and counting until I'm back in town after a 2 month absence. Every day that goes by I'm thinking about that weekend. Can't wait! Thanks for the great photos!
  24. I'm homesick as well. I had to move away last month because of my job. Seeing these photos make my heart ache. I'll be back in town visiting friends in a few weeks though. I can't wait. Great photos! I always appreciate when people actually shoot photos from the various neighborhoods rather than exclusively shooting skyscrapers or touristy stuff downtown. While I love Chicago's downtown and all of its skyscrapers, it's the wonderful neighborhoods that I miss the most.
