Cincinnati: Historic Photos
Really love these photos, thank you for sharing them. So cool to see the progression of construction on the First National Bank building. The Mercantile Library Building is nearing completion as the Bank Building is being erected. As for the "newer" photos, my guess is they are around late 1978. The Federated Department Stores Headquarters (Macy's)is well into its construction; It is at full height, and the exterior cladding is being applied. At the same time we can see that Fountain Square South is under construction, but has yet to rise out of the foundation.

Kings Island
One of the things that always frustrated me about KI, was that whenever they decided to add a new attraction it was always at the expense of another one. I never understood that add and subtract policy; Seems like if you had more rides then the lines at each would be shorter and the park visitor could experience more attractions. In my mind that adds up to better customer satisfaction. Besides which, doesn't KI have about a gazillion acres to expand into if they wanted to?

Wasn't this old church building actually an old Synagogue? It is a remnant of when the West End was the epicenter of the Jewish community. It was built at this location in 1866 for the Holy Congregation Brethren In Love. At that time Bauer was known as Melancthon. The Congregation was earlier located at 15th and Race as Holy Congregation United Brethren. As a touchstone of the history of the West End, a bridge to the past when it was a vital part of the Jewish chapter and then the AA experience, and possibly now a bridge to a new vision for the WE, this building deserves to be saved. just my 2 cents worth.

I am pretty sure that it was the Western & Southern Insurance Co. who did us the favor of ridding the city of that hideous monstrosity. The loss is actually compounded if you can see those amazing old stone mansions just to West of the Odd Fellows Temple. https://www.kentonlibrary.org/genphotos/viewimage.php?i=di107354

I don't know what should be done, I just don't want the history of this location to be forgotten, it has to be highlighted somehow. The old Turner's Gym building was simply massive. I sat on the rooftop of the garage portion of that building behind Wielert's (I don't recall what it was) and watched the demolition. Even as a 10 year old punk kid I realized the important piece of history being lost.

The most significant structure/attraction in this whole area was the old Turners Gym. Turners was the hub of German life when OtR reflected its namesake. When the building was vacated by the Turners in the 50's it became the hub of Appalachian life, right up until it was demolished in 1974. The place was utterly amazing, reeking of history and mystery, it was a fortress of dungeon like basements, mysterious hidden upper levels, and a cavernous gymnasium. In my mind it is one of the most unfortunate demolitions in the history of the neighborhood. If there is not some reference to the part it played in OtR's history, well then, that would just be tragic.

I thought there were some old brewery/beer tunnels under this site, does anyone know? I haven't heard any mention of them, hope that doesn't mean that it is ok to destroy them. It would be a shame to lose them, same goes for the last remnants of the old Windisch Muhlhauser/ Lion/ Burger Brewery foundation.

Found this today on the Wayne State University Digital Library. Some amazing old school Cincinnati density 1931. Exhilarating and heart breaking at the same time. There are several other Cincinnati views from the 1930's, check it out. For you Cleveland forumers there are some 1937 Great Lakes Exposition aerials on the site as well. https://digital.library.wayne.edu/digitalcollections/item?id=wayne:vmc9300

^Totally agree. How about we upgrade common park staples such as picnic tables and benches, some graffiti free grills. Give the residents some decent, well drained basketball courts and maybe a few more amenities. Maybe increase the police presence and encourage the decent law abiding residents of the area to take back this little park for themselves and their families.

I would say the background of the first is more Newport and Bellevue, but possibly Dayton too. Yes to the second. Third is more East, looking right down 6th Street into Bucktown, of course, that is Mt Adams in the background. Fourth photo is northeast, broadway commons, Pendleton, Mt Auburn, Eden Park etc.

Cincinnati: Historic Photos
From the Royal Collection Trust. Some photos taken by noted 19th century landscape photographer Charles Waldack. The photos were taken in 1860 from the roof of the Ohio Mechanics Institute, which was located at the swc of 6th and Vine streets. The photos offer a unique glimpse of the interior of the fast growing city of that time. The Young Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII, visited Canada and the United States during a 4 month span in 1860. The Queen City of the West was one of the cities he visited, and I'm assuming Mr. Waldack gave the young Prince the photos during that time. https://www.royalcollection.org.uk/collection/2700748/cincinnati https://www.royalcollection.org.uk/collection/2700746/cincinnati https://www.royalcollection.org.uk/collection/2700745/cincinnati

Cool, I like it! I think it will fit in fine, especially in this stretch of OtR. It kinda hearkens to it's neighbors across Liberty Street, St Francis Seraph, St Anthony Messenger and the other building West of St Anthony. I'm sure with more renderings and an explanation of what we are seeing that I will like it even more.

Can we please just be a little more civil. You guys do realize that both observations could be valid. One does not preclude the other. I have seen several photos on Instagram that were, in fact, almost all white people. I wouldn't label them as gentrifiers that seems unnecessarily provocative. One person even mentioned they thought the pool would be more crowded. The crowds came later in the afternoon, which were apparently predominantly African-American. See, both can be true, no one needs to be a liar or full of bs.

Cincinnati: Bars / Nightlife News
While I have no personal knowledge of the events, what I am hearing is that the dress code is only in effect starting at 9 p.m. You can wear whatever you like before that time period and you will be admitted. But if you show up on the weekend at 9 p.m. or later and are not in line with the dress code, you will be denied entry. Regardless of your shade of melanin, you will be admitted and denied based on your dress and the time of your arrival. To my knowledge, this is what happened. However, the story quickly became that TPB was discriminating against African-Americans. An onslaught of FB posts ensued, and the person responding to the FB posts made some questionable responses which only made matters worse. The situation could have been handled better.

Cincinnati: Random Development and News
The Age of Cincinnati map is fun and interesting. However, I decided to see how accurate it was by checking on 5 high profile buildings in OTR. The results were very spotty. I looked at Music Hall, St Francis Seraph, old St Mary, and the old St Johns (Bethlehem Apostolic/Transept) and St Paul Evang. (Taft's Ale House). Three out of the five were way way off in the estimation of their age. So, the map needs some work IMO.

It doesn't really stand out to me, I can't recall. I remember it being home to Teen Challenge in the late 70's early 80's. Then it was a church for many years. I remember that the southern portion (open space and the building in the rear was a garage

^I sat on that dilapidated roof and watched the demolition of Turners Gym in the Summer of 74'. I'm not ashamed to admit that, my 10 year old self shed a few tears over the whole affair.
