Cincinnati: Downtown: Fountain Square West
^Having lived through the three-ring circus that was FSW ,I can see where 1012 is coming from. After all the plans/proposals,all the hoopla and the lofty expectations (and lets not forget that we did end up with a surface lot at that location for years) all we get is a 3-story department store. OMG!! are you frikkin' kidding me Cincinnati, way to shoot for the stars!! How would you guys feel if after everything is said and done with the banks, the end result is something far, far, far inferior to what was envisioned? Then, perhaps you can relate to 1012's disappointment. Really, the saddest part of the whole FSW fiasco was the demolition of the Elder Beerman Dept. store. Underneath that horrible 60's reclad structure were 2 very historical, significant, and beautiful buildings. The old Rollman's Dept. store bldg. and the old Havlin Hotel bldg. If the city had simply refurbished them that would have been 10 times better than what we have today.

Cincinnati: Population Trends
While I thoroughly enjoy this lively discussion on cc, it is getting highly annoying flipping over here hoping to see that perhaps Cincy's population numbers have again been adjusted. Please, can we get back on topic, and move the rest to the crime thread?

Covington, KY: The Ascent at Roebling's Bridge
It seems that the "thin skinned cincinnatian syndtrome" is at epidemic levels again. I'm going to have to agree with Last Don on this one. Butler's comment was innocuous enough, if anyone was trying to wage a border-war it was the reporter. I mean c'mon, "asked about the fact that the architectural landmark was rising in Northern Kentucky as opposed to in Ohio," Butler, to his credit didn't take the bait. I think his answer speaks for itself. Personally I like the Ascent, and feel it looks better every day; I will regard it as a Cincinnati building just as surely as I regard the Basilica of the Assumption and the Roebling Suspension Bridge as Cincinnati buildings/landmarks. We proudly claim the bridge as our own don't we? Hopefully we can become as intertwined as a region as that iconic bridge is to our image, and the spitting wars, real or imagined, can be put to rest once and for all.

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
^^^^I'm going to be keeping my fingers crossed for 1500-1502 Vine. I have long time admired this building,if this structure is lost the sad truth is not many would notice. IMO this building is simply irreplaceable, if you are not familiar with this structure then please take some time to drive or walk by it. Imagine the facade beautifully restored. I don't think they get much grander than this in the whole of otr, if it can be saved I think its transformative power is such that it could send the current otr renaissance into full fledged rebirth.

^I assume your'e talking about the gay night club, correct? I took the comment as a play on the word "crankshaft". I suppose he could have made reference to drugs but that would just be recounting history.

Cincinnati Books
Just picked up Historic Photos of Cincinnati the other day. There is not a whole lot of information in the book. As the name implies, its basically a great big photo album of historic Cincinnati photos, with captions of course. If you like Cincy you'll like this book. All photos are black and white and taken from collections at the Cincinnati Museum Center, some I had seen but also a great number of which I had not. All in all I found it quite interesting.

Cincinnati: Mt. Auburn: Development and News
^I hope you're right Kendall. We here on the forum tend to view otr through rose colored glasses.Even the bad news, we chalk it up to carelessness on a crime victims part, a lack of common sense or even stupidity. In most cases this is the case. Then there is always the sensationalism of the media.... I don't know in this instance tho, it just sounds really bad to me. Sorry to sound a little alarmist, but if someone had been shot or killed, GOD forbid, wer'e set back 10 years. Can't wait to get Michael Redmonds take on this one.

New Uses for Old Churches
Maria, what exactly are you proposing? Are you simply writing an article, trying to raise awareness? Or planning an actual intervention/rescue of a church? I've often imagined an otr landscape with the steeples/spires of all the churches restored to their former glory and sporting spectacular new lighting. MAN!!! WHAT A SIGHT THAT WOULD BE!! Just a dream of mine, sigh.... maybe one day. Anyway, good luck to you.

New Uses for Old Churches
I think you may have meant St. Pauls German Evangelical Church. Deutsche Evangelische Paulus Kirche. Johannes is on 12th and Elm

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Artistry
I'm attending a company Christmas party at the Montgomery Inn Banquet Center tomorrow. Our company was banned from ever coming back a few years ago (apparently we're a rowdy bunch) They invited us back this year though, perhaps they're looking to save on demo costs  I have a nephew who works there and he says everyone at the MIBC is to be gone by January 1st. The catering is to continue tho,but I'm uncertain as to what location that will be out of. So perhaps there will site clearance by January and groundbreaking in spring.

Enquirer asks, "Best Downtown, Cincy or Indy?"
The official UO viewpoint on Cincinnati is "essentially, there really is no downtown Cincinnati because the city is full of small towns, each having their own flavor" Why don't we get rid of the term downtown altogether then. We could reinvent ourselves, include the West End,OTR,DT Covington,DT Newport, part of East End,as Rando suggests and be reborn........ a new vibrant CINTUCKNATI!!!! no? how about CINCINTUCKY!!!!!

Enquirer asks, "Best Downtown, Cincy or Indy?"
^ I agree. I really don't understand the disconnect there. In our early history it was very common to think of the urbanized areas as one, in theory if not in name. Visitors to the area have regarded the region as being Cincinnati, generally w/o making distinction. That is changing however, and I think it has to do with the fact that the locals are making such a big deal out of us versus them, i.e. cincy vs. nky. Cincinnatians (urbanites in particular) look down their noses at ky. Ky in turn sneers at Cincinnati and utters a collective yawn. Perhaps we can stop all the bickering and the in-fighting and just wow the socks off of any visitors we have the fortune of welcoming to our little corner of the world. Collectively, as a region, we have an astounding array of attractions and points of interest to satisfy most anyone. Makes sense to me to present a united front and not draw them into our assinine squabbling. It just doesn't make sense to build up ky by tearing down cincy and vice versa. Sorry about the rant, probably we can look forward to the Enquirer asking, in the not to distant future, "who has the best downtown, Cincy or NKY?" SENSELESS CANNIBALISM.

Cincinnati: Downtown: 84.51°
Wouldn't it be something else if demand for these units is so overwhelming that they sell out quickly? Prompting a brand new skyscraper above Macys, with additional condos/office space to be built? We may be on the verge of downtown BOOM!!! Oh well, it doesn't hurt to dream does it?

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
I agree. There seems to be so much happening and from so many quarters (at least comparative to what was done pre-riot) I think the riots had the unexpected benefit of pushing out those who may have had no real love of otr, who perhaps were not really committed to the long term health of the area-they simply were riding the crest of the development wave. Anyway it appears that those who are there now are the real deal. The truly ardent supporters who are walking the walk. There seems to be a real difference to the quiet renaisance taking place this time. The national media has begun to take note....how great is that? Regardless of that, the opportunity to preserve for future generations this priceless collection of 19th century urban fabric is within our grasp and building momentum. These really are exciting times. p.s. cant wait to hear what Laurie Quinliven and the I-TEAM have to say

Is this a Cincinnati insult?
so let me get this straight. We've gone from someone wondering about a perceived slight to Cincinnati, to propagating ignorant prejudicial stereotypes against another segment of the population? Sounds to me like you people need to chill. Who the F cares what someone thinks of you as an individual or as a city. Cincinnati needs to put away the "Sally Field "complex it has and stand up and proudly declare itself as a great city full of tradition, culture, history, opportunity etc...In my eyes great people and places dont obscess over what other people think or say about them they continue to move forward, take the risks (sometimes ridicule)others are too timid to pursue and hopefully sucess, and perhaps greatness follow after. I did not take the reporters assertion as an insult I thought it referred to the whole "Cincinnati,USA" which this town has used for decades prior to the official slogan,ad campaign adopted by the chamber of commerce,or whoever.Anyway, can we please just move on?

Very nice indeed. IMO UC doesn't get anywhere near the coverage it deserves. As many have already said "the university has come a long way." Job well done Rando
