Finally. Using the All-Star game to determine WS home field was one of the dumbest ideas ever. Now they need shorten the regular season to around 140 games to fit a 2-2-1-1-1 home-away format in the LCS and WS as opposed to that awful 2-3-2.
  2. Most of those people probably aren't moving out. The DC metro grows at 3x the rate of the Baltimore metro. DC has been sprawling into Baltimore for decades. I'd bet those people who have "moved into" the Baltimore area are in DC metro adjacent Anne Arundel and Howard Counties and still work in the DC area. Probably consider themselves DC people as well.
  3. JT is starting to look like Brandon Weeden. You can see him counting as he stares down each receiver. He was almost picked off three times on Saturday. Got to believe a team like Alabama will make him pay for his mistakes.
  4. Well that just isn't true. http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2016/11/27/13756832/jt-barrett-first-down-ohio-state-michigan-2016 http://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/michigan-has-legit-beef-with-controversial-spot-on-ohio-states-fourth-down-conversion/ http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2016/11/26/13753594/ohio-state-michigan-final-score-results-2016 http://ftw.usatoday.com/2016/11/fourth-down-spot-ohio-state-michigan-double-overtime http://www.landgrantholyland.com/2016/11/26/13753718/michigan-ohio-state-2016-fourth-down-spot-overtime-j-t-barrett-first-down And many of the missed calls were very consequential. Notably the pass interference called on the Michigan defender on Ohio State's final drive in the fourth quarter (the ball was arguably uncatchable and past the player before contact) and the missed PI call on Ohio State in the second overtime forcing Michigan to settle for a FG. Again, I'm not claiming Michigan lost because of these missed calls, but they certainly didn't help. Michigan had the ball and was driving with a 17-7 lead in the middle of the 3rd quarter. Then the OSU D forced a pick. That was turning point to me, not the refs. Michigan hangs on to the football and they win that game hands down even if Durbin makes the two field goals. I thought Harbaugh let his team get a little arrogant with a 10-point lead and plenty of time to go. Also despite ESPN continually claiming there is a revival of the "Ten Year War" in order to make this happen will require Michigan to win a game at some point in the future.
  5. Personally, I think it would be great if it was a 30 story project. From a skyline view I think it would lead to a denser look to the area north of Gateway. And if it takes a smaller main building to get this project off the ground, so be it.
  6. Last year was a classic example of this. Sleepwalked through the season until they got to Michigan. I think part of the problem is being in the division with Rutgers and Maryland. It's like having three bye weeks in the Big 10 schedule.
  7. Key points include: FTA is opposed to closing Superior and says it violates the funding agreement The mayor and the city have a laundry list of objections (confused motorists might not understand that Superior is only for buses, impaired motorists could present a risk, there aren't any significant delays, the roadway looks too much like a unified square and kids in the splash park would be confused, it makes Public Square a potential target, too many events are held there, etc.) FTA considers August 1 the date at which RTA went into violation RTA proposed reopening on Oct 31 The Mayor's office wanted to make reopening Public Square contingent upon RTA assuming any risk. Full piece on cleveland.com including some of the correspondence: http://www.cleveland.com/naymik/index.ssf/2016/11/heres_what_rta_and_city_hall_r.html (Edited for clarity.) Wow, they have a laundry list of objections AFTER everything has been planned and built. What's the point of having these people run the city when they clearly weren't paying attention during the planning process. Just inept. I hope the FTA goes after the city.
  8. With what money?
  9. The decision was truly a "Cleveland is going to Cleveland" moment. Why not just remove "Public" from the Square. Can't wait until it's closed off for corporate events.
  10. Most PD articles on Hopkins are like PR pieces for the airlines: Spirit is starting service to XXX, Frontier is cutting service to XXX. I doubt anyone at the PD is willing to risk their careers through losing city contacts and asking those questions.
  11. There's no bravado and discussing why Hopkins is falling behind other peer airports in the region is not Eeyore stuff. If you want business growth and real transition from decline, Cleveland has to be global city. It's very simple.
  12. Absolutely it's a bribe. Pittsburgh now has non-stops to Iceland, Paris and Frankfurt. Cleveland's international destinations are Toronto and weekend service to Cancun. Which is a true international airport?
  13. More bad news for CLE. Pittsburgh will get low-cost Condor non-stops to Frankfurt 2x weekly starting June 2017. This pretty much locks the door on Cleveland-Euro service for the foreseeable future. I'm sure Condor didn't even bother talking to the Cleveland folks like WOW! did.
  14. I know on a map Iceland seems off course but the curvature of the Earth and weather patterns means most aircraft fly near or over Iceland on their way to Europe and back if you live in the United States. So it's not "all the way up there". There is no metric for European flying post hub for Cleveland and there is no interest from any Euro or US carrier to fly to Cleveland-Europe. So, yeah, it was kind of a big deal. Right but if I was not going to use it unless I went to Iceland, why would I care? Simply put, it's probably the best shot of Cleveland has at getting any service to Europe at all.

Mets have a big chunk of Queens and Long Island. Indians territory includes Erie and counties just south of Buffalo that are claimed be Pirates and Yankees areas on here. Not surprising the NYT would try to claim the entire state of NY as "Yankees" territory.

  17. They may be...but as I wrote in a different post above, the demand has to be on both ends. It can't just be Cleveland revenue. It must flow both ways. PIT has already demonstrated that it can support European flights. The Paris flight is no longer subsidized. WOW is just stepping in to sop up the gravy that present capacity can't handle. If Delta upguages to a 767 would WOW be able to compete? No way Delta upgauges to a 767. The flight has been cut back to the 3 peak summer months. It's been struggling without the subsidy. In these deals the airport itself usually offers to waive landing fees and sometimes counter/gate rental. Civic parties, like Team NEO, Downtown Cleveland Alliance, and Greater Cleveland Partnership might offer free advertising and promotion. Big companies like Cle Clinic, S-W Paint, Eaton, etc. commit to buying some number of seats. Put them all together and it's a valuable package. But you need a spark plug to get the bundle packaged and promoted. I don't think we have that kind of spark at the airport. CLE's financial reports are on file with the FAA in their CATS database. http://cats.airports.faa.gov/Reports/reports.cfm Form 126 is intergovernmental transfers. Form 127 is a sort of balance sheet and operating statement. FWIW, CLE operated at a small profit and paid down a good bit of debt for 2015. Their cost per emplaned passenger dropped by about $4, which was very good performance for just a year after the United dehubbing. Ah-hah! Mystery solved. PIT is paying $400,000 a year for the Wow flights. http://www.post-gazette.com/news/transportation/2016/11/07/Discount-airline-bringing-wow-prices-to-European-destinations/stories/201611070053 This is what happens when you let a former EMS commissioner and city OPM head run an airport. Need someone knowledgeable at this position. Oh well.
  18. All London and Paris flights haven't operated in over a half-decade. WOW! is more like Spirit or Frontier than a traditional international carrier. They're not looking for high-end amenities. Perfect for Cleveland IMHO but I guess Pittsburgh offered them a better deal. I could very well be wrong but I think Szabo and his folks weren't really seeking them out, it looks more like WOW! was looking for a new market and Cleveland was on their list. Folks in Pittsburgh are more adept at knowing what an international carrier wants and are actually are talking to British, Lufthansa, Qatar and Emirates. It makes sense they landed WOW! that way. Meanwhile Szabo's crew thinks it's a big-time catch to move Allegiant from Akron-Canton to Cleveland. It's maddening for an area large enough to support at least one Euro non-stop that airport leaders don't really care to pursue it.
  19. They were talking to CLE and the discussions were very detailed. I guess they went home and decided PIT's deal was better. I'd sure like to know if PIT offered any subsidy (which is how they got their Paris flight) - something CLE has been unwilling to do. The spokesperson for Allegheny County Airports Authority said the airline was not just looking at Pittsburgh. No mention of a subsidy. It's going to be a year round flight so this pretty much closes the door on Cleveland getting service there and possibly any non-stop service to Europe at all.
  20. WOW! just announced they are starting 4x weekly from Pittsburgh to Iceland. Great job on the rumor Dougal, if they started this service so close by you had to think they were talking to Cleveland as well. Unfortunately it is also another example of Hopkins folks not being able to close the deal on international service and I'm sure other carriers noticed again. Those on here who defend Hopkins as good enough in it's current state should enjoy driving to places like Columbus, Pittsburgh and Detroit or flying through a legacy hub if you want to visit an international destination in the forseeable future. It is what it is.
  21. Hts121, I'm assuming your history argument knock was at me. You need to take a breath and reread my post. I'm not defending the logo, I'm just surprised at the lack of attention it got in 2016 vs. 1995.
  22. What's strange it that there seemed to more contention over Chief Wahoo in '95 and '97 then there was for this series and we're supposedly in a more "enlightened" age. Maybe it's because the Cubs took all the limelight whereas, especially in '95, the Indians garnered most of the media attention.

I think it would take 81 sellouts to get Cleveland back to Top 10 status, especially now that Progressive seats less. It would be nice not be 30 out of 32 though. I believe they were 24th in 2008 after the 07 ALCS. Of course that 08 team collapsed and attendance went right down with it. They need two or three competitive seasons to get the season ticket base large enough so that you don't have 9000 people attending in late April. Got to believe the more losses the Browns pile up it's more likely people may switch over to the Tribe as well.

The '97 team was good but the truly dominant team in recent memory was the '95 Indians who went 100-44. A full 162 game schedule and that team would have won 110+.

It was one of the greatest games played. I still say Game 6 of 75 is the greatest ever played. As much as it stings, Game 7 of the 1997 WS was a classic. People don't really look at it that way because it involved the fire-sale Marlins.
