Parma: Development and News
Forest City let Parmatown go into receivership in 2012 and sold it to a Cincinnati based company that came to the city with this plan. Hard to believe that other area developers didn't know what was going on and I'd bet interest was low. Parmatown actually will have less retail now than when it was a mall. This counters the trend going on in the region as a whole.

Parma: Development and News
"Every city"?? And I didn't say lifestyle center. I said "a more creative, more unique, more inspiring to visit and more energizing to the surround areas." If you took that mean to lifestyle center, then I encourage you to consider the many other land use models available. Or maybe we instead try a "Parma model" designed specifically for Parma, and designed by Parma citizens. When you give residents, business owners and civic leaders a little bit of urban planning training and then put a blank tablet in front of them and some leeway for debate, some pretty amazing things result -- including stakeholder buy-in. Outside of the current developers I haven't heard of any other interest in this area. What other uses are available for it? Can't be a park. Parma can't maintain it's existing facilities and the loss of revenue from retailers would only put the city in a bigger bind. About the only thing I can think of is a medical office complex because of it's proximity to UH-Parma. Even then, that would be a lot of buildings to fill considering the footprint of the mall and Greater Cleveland still has plenty of vacant office space. I'm not arguing with you, I want something denser there too but I just think there aren't a lot of options here and it would be 1000x worse to let the area lie fallow waiting for the next great thing that never comes.

Every city has Crocker Park and Legacy Village too. I would love a dense neighborhood that could spark the surrounding area especially north of Ridgewood but the idea is toxic for developers unless you can prove the folks moving in there will make a certain income. Very few developers are building lifestyle centers or anything remotely urban for the working class. It is what it is.

Parma: Development and News
This is no more visionary than Van Aken comparing their respective 'hoods and location of transit. In fact I think Van Aken is far more disappointing. I don't get it, are you advocating sprawl? Who's going to live in Parma? Some people in the Cleveland area (and on here) pretend that Beachwood and Westlake are more "urban" than Parma. Parma doesn't have money and folks like Stark have no interest in redeveloping an existing mall when they can grab richer folks by plowing under farmland in the outer suburbs. Parmatown shouldn't be Parma's "downtown". Ridge/Snow, Ridge/Pearl, State/Snow all have better bones to become something denser than anything built along Ridgewood or Day Dr. That's where the "vision" should be IMHO.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
Reading the part that states, "Planners wanted to encircle Burke Lakefront Airport with a walking trail, but found that may not be feasible due to rules imposed by the FAA..." makes me wanna scream that you cement "connections" with DEVELOPMENT, not with contrived "trails," which we've been doing left and right forever. I think everybody knows that the airport has to be closed. Surely everyone, regardless of whether they'll say it or not, knows that? Litt is talking about a simple Lakefront plan and quickly it expands to Burke closing. I have no beef with closing Burke but who administers the land after closing? The city of Cleveland? I think that would be a disaster. The city has trouble keeping much smaller parcels of land in good shape and I could see it as another abandoned albatross on the city's neck. Has any developer come forward about building something there? I mean it's not like it's a hidden discussion. Yet no one I heard of has expressed interest in building anything there. The only way I would let Burke go is if a significant part of it was given to the Metroparks. Even then, I don't know that kind of cleanup costs that would entail. I know this is the Lakefront thread but I think the biggest land issue with the city land use is not Burke...it's the AM steel plant. I know it would take decades but it would be great to reclaim the valley south of downtown how Pittsburgh has done with it's riverfronts. They valley is such a unique and beautiful asset for a "Midwestern" city when you get down to the National Park.

It's nice to see local companies coming downtown to fill retail space that national chains may be still reluctant to use for whatever reason.

Ohio New Hot Housing Market
Philly is the best bang for your buck, IMHO. Cheap for the EC and filled with cool row housing. A funky city that is a quick train ride to NYC.

Chicago: Developments and News
Compared to Cabrini Green and it's old surroundings this development is like Paris. Not quite sure what some were expecting. Not every urban neighborhood can be 100% upscale gentrification. This is still a "transition" area at best.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
OK. Thanks for the correction, my bad and I knew that. I'm a child of the 80s, I guess I will always associate the Jacobs name with Dick. Change "him" to "they" or whatever.

Is there any evidence that this redesign will make him move.

A winning team? Really? How many people show up to watch the circus that is the Cleveland Clowns? Vegas has the Indians at 84.5 wins this season. That's like the Browns going 9-7. Give me a break about the Indians being losers.

Ohio: General Business & Economic News
Right, you're using a computer or smartphone to type a response. Think about how many people have lost their jobs once data storage became digital. It's an incredible amount and hasn't been wholly replaced by computer industry types. It's the good and bad about tech advances.

I feel bad for the employees. Maybe Giant Eagle will actually put them to work as cashiers in the bigger stores instead of making their customers do the work for them.... Good grief. Someone else complaining about self-checkout? I've see that complaint from a few people on UO and it always makes me laugh. I prefer self-checkout if I only have a few things. It's faster. If I have a lot, I go to a cashier. It's really simple: if you don't want to self-check, then don't. And stop complaining about it here Sounds like you like it Jeremy? Perhaps you should apply? ;) Giant Eagle could use a few more (hundred) cashiers. I am college-educated and capable of operating the scanners. But in the end it always seems to take longer with the verifications and such, even with only a few items. And in reality, I'd like to see Giant Eagle (and other retailers like Home Depot, etc) hire more Americans. These are good paying jobs for some people. I also suggest you go to a REAL grocery store like Wegmans and witness what a pleasure it is to see a bank of 20 human cashiers blasting through a high volume checkout in no time at all. We have Wegmans in the DC area but it is still faster for me and my daughter to do self-checkout at Giant even with two-carts of items. Wegmans shoppers like to brag but their cashiers I have observed don't move any faster than other stores. Some are also the slow and chatty types too. Long lines. No thanks. Self-checkout done right is great over any cashier.

I think some of the skepticism on here is just a hope that IKEA will still find land near Beachwood.

Cleveland Burke Lakefront Airport
Hopkins operation is long way off from non-legacy hubs like Boston Logan or Seattle/Tacoma or even the Southwest focus city "hub" at Baltimore/Washington. I know the FAA wants to keep capacity but most of Burke could be shifted to Hopkins and Cuyahoga County. I'm sure some city pols somehow still see Burke as a future cash cow. I don't know if this will ever be the case. I think Burke and Hopkins should be run by a regional entity and not the city. Clearer heads would prevail about what to do with Burke IMHO.

Why would IKEA purchase the land if they weren't going to develop it there? It's happening. I know the countless eastsiders here want this adjacent to a ritzy area off l-271 but they can build a very large store in Brooklyn with the land from the PD printing plant and the soon to be former American Greetings site. And I think they want a larger store because of the population of the region. I also like this site because of it's proximity to the actual Cleveland West Park/Old Brooklyn neighborhoods as opposed to a site located in the outer burbs.

Weather
Using a single day is a bad example. It's going to be 60 here in DC tomorrow while it will be 25 and snowing in Boston. Yet average highs are only about 10 degrees apart this time of year (45 vs. 35). Sometimes single day weather amplifies differences but it all comes back to the average in the end.

Weather
It's all mental and based on what you prefer. Average temps aren't dramatically different between the cities: Cleveland January average high/low temp: 34/22 Cincinnati January average high/low temp: 39/22 Cleveland July average high/low temp: 83/64 Cincinnati July average high/low temp: 87/66 Again, the data shows it's mostly in one's head. Especially in the winter months.

Cleveland/Parma urbex
I don't believe this site is the greatest for meeting people who want to explore areas south of Memphis Ave. Ken (KJP) does a good job on updating threads about Old Brooklyn and Parma 'hoods but many others focus on areas north of Memphis on the West Side or just the East Side. More people on here chat about suburban Legacy Village than the actual Cleveland 'hood of Old Brooklyn. Maybe you can be the person to change that. Good luck!

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
99% of the general public refer to Cable News Network as "CNN", while 99% of the general public refer to F9 as "Frontier". That would be my explanation. Who references Malaysian Airlines as MH? Yet all the news outlets did. Again, just pointing out the oddity that no one complained on those threads.

Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
Hey my mom grew up in Parma Heights, but truthfully I don't know enough about the area to suggest any merger scenarios. That being said, I wasn't the one that made the suggestion! :) Not implying you did. I just think it's weird the 8th largest "city" in Ohio should be a prime candidate for a merger.
