  1. I think it's cool that Cincy folks put their high school on their resume. It's another funky quirk of the area. That being said, I wouldn't try to do that anywhere outside of Cincy, unless you lack a college education or are looking for an internship in your first few years of college. To put it another way...nobody hiring in Philly or Denver is gonna give a crap if you went to Moeller (unless you know they are from Cincy). Also, the dude who wrote the article should have clarified the high school thing a bit more. If you aren't trolling UrbanOhio for the proper explanation, you could very easily surmise he's saying that people in Cincinnati don't go to college.
  2. I agree with ya. Columbus is more high tech than the other 2 C's.
  3. I think that's why alot of Clevelanders live on the East Coast, Perhaps they're looking for the same social atmosphere but with better housing stock? *tisk tisk* Plenty of EC folks are moving to Cleveland, especially from the NYC area. No worries. :)
  4. No, most of the Russian Pacific ports get some form of ice along their shores, but they operate all year long. Only Magadan is impassable because the Sea of Oshtosk is shallow.....it operates from May to December.
  5. I think the article was dead on about Cincy. It's a very odd/unique place. Cleveland is very East Coast. I think that's why alot of Clevelanders live on the East Coast, and alot of natives on the East Coast are familiar with Cleveland. Not much adaptation needed for Clevelanders living here, except patience when it comes to traffic.
  6. Big Lots? Value City? What are these? Only white people from Parma shop at these places. Don't worry about it. :)
  7. That's a good point! I've thought about this as well. I mean, I'd rather have a P&G over Google, but the amount of 25-35 year olds that a company like Apple, MS, and Google bring to the table has to be amazing (versus other age groups). Although not "headquartered" in Cincy, Siemens, Xerox, and GE Aviation do have a large corporate presence that bring a lot of jobs to the area in the field of Technology. But see...this brings me back to my original point. Looking at companies you've listed along with f500 companies in the Cincinnati area...it's not suprising to me that Cincy floats around the national average in terms of unemployment and the area has a below average job and population average growth rate vs. the rest of the U.S. Is the economic picture rosier than Cleveland? Hell, yeah. Will it ever become an economic juggernaut like San Francisco, Washington or Atlanta? Hell, no. Ohio as a whole can do alot better, and that includes Cincinnati as well.
  8. Borowski's 6-run 9th inning against the Yankees dosen't make me feel like they've solved the closer situation either. But hell, outside of that awful Yankees series...the Indians are 11-4. We're back to the 90's....hit the hell out of the ball and hope the pitching staff can keep the other side below 10 runs.
  9. Concrete contractor asks judge to halt airport contract award Posted by Mike Tobin April 24, 2007 11:33AM Lawyers for Anthony Allega Cement Contractors Inc. are expected to be back in court Wednesday trying to block the city of Cleveland from awarding a $40 million contract. Allega's motion, now in U.S. District Court, was filed less than a week after Mayor Frank Jackson suspended the company indefinitely from doing work for the city of Cleveland. Allega was suspended after a preliminary investigation concluded the company used front companies to skirt city rules on subcontracting work to companies owned by women and minorities in 2001, when Allega built a $130 million runway at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Company president John Allega argued that the city's requirement for subcontracting work to minorities and women are so vague that they are unconstitutional. The city's investigation into the company's conduct was so shoddy that it denied him due process, Allega claims. "Mayor Jackson's public statements regarding suspending Allega indefinitely from working for Cleveland are factually and legally unsupportable," Allega's attorney John Climaco wrote. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2007/04/allega_construction_company_as.html
  10. ^^Big Lots!...Jesus, that makes Value City look like Saks Fifth Avenue.
  11. The only disappointing thing about the Ohio f500 list, for me, is the lack of "new economy" companies. There's no Dell, Google or Microsoft. It's basically grocery/department stores, paint, rubber, glass, steel, insurance, financial. It's a very diversified state in terms of "old economy". Maybe I'm wrong on this one, but this may be one of the reasons why Ohio's economy only goes so far.

we'll its a given these will be "cattle cars" lol Besides the airports they are currently scheduled to serve are too far away from the cities they claim to serve. then they "nickle-and-dime" you for everything in-flight. I don't expect to see skybus at CLE or CVG and even a slight chance to see them at Akron-Canton, Toledo or Dayton as those are markets currently served by LCC The cost of flying an Airbus on a short-haul flight to another Ohio market (especially with low-fares like they are posting) means I highly doubt you'll ever see a CMH-CLE or a CMH-CVG, let alone a flight to Akron-Canton, Toledo or Dayton. The longer the flight the better. If they pick up a smaller aircraft type along the way....maybe. Don't forget Continental and Delta would probably match Skybus's fares (if the airline attempted to do a Cleveland or Cincy run) on those routes and take a loss, just like United did with Indy Air to force Skybus out.

Simply put: Skybus = Independence Air with less money.

^^ FYI, ANA made $587 million last quarter. :)
  15. Shipping is already is feasable in places like Magadan for six months out of the year, and ports are ice-free year round in Petrol and Sahlinisk, which is why this tunnel and the destruction of the virgin land of Far East Siberia it will bring makes zero economic sense.

Jesus...they're flying to airports not even JetBlue or Southwest has ventured into. Flying 100+ seat aircraft to Bellingham and Portsmouth? This is going to be very interesting. I smell an early death for old Skybus, but ya never know.
  17. I do believe MayDay, it's time to add an avatar. :)
  18. As both a Parmanian and a Parma Heighter (technically I'm a PHer that moved to Parma but I was born at Parma Hospital)...I feel it is my duty to list the pro's and con's of Parma (feel free to disagree): PRO: Parma is ridiculously safe. In fact according to FBI stats...Parma is the 17th safest city in the country with a population between 50K and 100K. CON: Parma is ridiculously boring. I constantly went downtown or the Flats to have any fun. PRO: Parma has good bus service (especially in the northern half of Parma). Runs early/late and pretty often. Of course that was back in the 80's and 90's, maybe that's changed now. CON: Closest rail transit is on the Red Line at the W. 150th station/or at the airport. PRO: Parma schools are OK. CON: Parma schools are just OK. PRO: Parma has some good city parks...along with the MetroParks system that runs down Big Creek Parkway. CON: It has a very crappy history of race relations and political corruption. Although things are better over the last 10 years, it's tough to shake that image, just like Cleveland can't seem it's image problem. PRO: Parma has the best pizza in the Cleveland metro, and it's cheap. I still defer the best pierogies to the city. And the Jigsaw Saloon is wicked place to eat and bowl. CON: Parma is auto-centric. PRO: Alot of East Siders think Parma is as sprawled out as Mentor or Westlake...it's actually more along the lines of South Euclid, especially north of Ridgewood. That's all I can think of for now.

Nonstops to Vegas to return Thursday, April 19, 2007 By G. PATRICK KELLEY REPOSITORY BUSINESS EDITOR AirTran Airways will resume nonstop flights from Akron-Canton Regional Airport to Las Vegas in August. The company said Wednesday it would resume the flights it stopped in May 2006 because of the cost of fuel. "They promised they would bring it back when fuel settled a bit," said Airport Director Fred Krum. "It has, but it's still high." AirTran will leave here at 11:43 a.m. and arrive at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas at 12:53 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Return flights will leave at 2:55 p.m. and arrive at 10 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. AirTran began the five-day-a-week flights in August 2005, then cut back about six months later. In February, the company announced the flights would stop. Full story at http://www.cantonrep.com/index.php?ID=349164&Category=5&subCategoryID=

From the Foster's Daily Democrat of Dover, NH. Looks like Portsmouth, NH to Columbus will be one of the first routes on Skybus. Friday, April 20, 2007 New airline expected at Pease By MICHAEL GOOT Portsmouth Bureau Chief [email protected] PORTSMOUTH — A new low-cost airline could be flying out of Portsmouth International Airport at Pease as early as next month. Skybus Airlines, which is based in Columbus, Ohio, is entering an agreement with the Pease Development Authority for twice daily flights seven days a week from Portsmouth to Columbus and ultimately to eight domestic destinations. 22. I don't know if the NBA would grant a franchise for an arena in a suburban locale anymore. Not saying an arena in Butler County wouldn't work...it's just the trend over the last 15 years or so is to move arenas back to city centers (i.e. Washington, Cleveland).
  23. OK....beyond the tunnel, there are no vehicular roads that run from say Fairbanks (where it could link to the Alaska Hwy.) to the Bering Strait. I'm not sure about rail, I think there is rail from Fairbanks to Nome. (I'm assuming the tunnel will go through Wrangel Island). But that's not even the biggest problem....there is practically no road or even rail infrastructure in far Eastern Siberia. To connect it to the Trans-Siberian Railroad would be a daunting venture at best. Far Eastern Siberia isn't flat...there are mountain ranges galore out there. As for highways on the Russian side, I'm assuming the Russians aren't going build a 2000+-mile gravel highway to Vladivostok or Yakstuk. God forbid you run out of gas or a train stalls in the winter as well, Eastern Siberia is the coldest region in the world outside of the poles. I gotta believe the extra costs are going to cost almost a much as the actual tunnel itself. This sounds more ridiculous than that phallic symbol they plan to raise in Chicago.
  24. ^^ I'm editing myself. Maybe this guy was hired on in Cleveland after getting busted in Detroit. :) Drunken Detroit airport de-icer crashes truck ROMULUS (AP) — A man working as an airplane de-icer at Detroit Metropolitan Airport was caught Wednesday afternoon with an open beer and legally drunk after tipping over his vehicle, an airport spokesman said. The man, whose name wasn't immediately released, was younger than 21, the legal age to drink alcohol in Michigan, airport spokesman Mike Conway told The Associated Press, and was arrested by airport police. "This person had an open beer in a de-icing truck with him," Conway said in an interview on Detroit-area television station WJBK. "That's just not acceptable and we're not going to tolerate that type of behavior." The de-icer truck tipped over shortly after the man left a parking lot at the airport in suburban Detroit, and wasn't near aircraft, Conway said. A second, unopened beer also was found in the vehicle, he said.

The news here in DC is that Butler could be back around game 3 or 4, so five or god forbid six isn't impossible. Bulter's addition would make the series more interesting...but without Arenass the Wiz ship looks sunk.
