Cleveland Guardians Discussion
19K showed up for the Indians-Angels game last night. 9/10 being Tribe fans. ESPNNews gave props to Cleveland on the attendance. They said it's sad for Milwaukee when more people attend an Cleveland-LA game than when their home team is there.

SkyBus launches / Sky Busts
Nationwide takes to the air with Skybus ads Wednesday, April 11, 2007 Marla Matzer Rose THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH If you fly on a Skybus plane, Nationwide will be on your side. It?ll also be on your tray table, overhead bin and bathroom door. That?s because the startup airline has tapped its biggest hometown investor, Nationwide, as the sponsor of its first "branded airplane." In a move aimed at defraying ticket costs, the airline will sell advertising on both the inside and outside of its fleet of Airbus A319 planes. Akron-Canton not a Metro-Area...
I gotta agree with you. Especially with the growth of Green Twp. over the last 15 years, it should be a no-brainer. If Washington and Baltimore can merge...it's pretty silly to me why Akron-Canton can't. But the boys at the census seem paranoid of merging anything Ohio (i.e Cincy-Dayton, Akron-Canton...which would arguably make it Cleveland-Akron-Canton).

Agreed. The Tribe plays Detroit 17 times.....we play Seattle 7, I believe. I doubt you'll see this problem next year. I take that back...Selig will still be making decisions.

How in the hell does this make Cleveland look bad? Having 20 consecutive seasons of losing baseball made Cleveland look much worse back in the day. The White Sox father and son team that stabbed the Royals first-base coach 5 years ago, that looked bad. This will be ancient history when it's 90+ degrees east of the Rockies in July. :)

I get a kick out of that too Imagine the Detroit Pistons of Auburn Hills Or the New York Giants/Jets of East Rutherford, New Jersey Only California owners would be goofy enough to make a name change like that.

Look at the bright side. If the Indians finish the season 2-1...they'll be in the playoffs for sure! :)

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
PD editorial supporting Smith: Healing Hopkins Monday, April 09, 2007 For a quarter-century, Cleveland Hopkins International Air port has been dragged down by food-service and retail out lets that, on their best day, might have risen to the level of mediocre. Ricky Smith, the city's relatively new airport director, wants to change that. He wants to expand retail and food-service space and hire a development company that will bring in stores and food outlets that are more attractive to travelers. It's a move that is long overdue. Since the early 1980s, a single company has relied on its City Hall connections to maintain a stranglehold on airport concessions. The result has been bad for the taxpayers, bad for air travelers and bad for the airlines. Airport concessions matter. Not only does an airport's environment help shape a city's image, but there's a relationship between the concession revenues generated at airports and the amount passengers pay for airfare. Cleveland finally seems to have an airport boss who not only understands that, but is willing to do something about it. http://www.cleveland.com/editorials/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/opinion/117610773581540.xml&coll=2

If they don't, I can't figure out how they are going to make up these games. BTW, I haven't seen Cleveland as much on TV here since Carey was on. It's become quite the saga. I heard they may move the Angels series to LA. The pictures of those guys making snowmen on the dugout last Friday was classic.

How's the weather up in C-land today? Are they actually going to get the doubleheader in today?

Census: Ohio Metropolitan Areas
I don't have a problem, just making an asessment you probably don't like. My point is this: What would you rather have...a successful downtown retail center linked to rail due to city/metro growth (by which no Ohio city has)...or another strip big-box in the burbs? Is this really a good example? And how does an IKEA help raise wages? Is everyone in Cincy metro making $8.25/hr.?

Census: Ohio Metropolitan Areas
I will never be confused with someone who advocates sprawl, but population growth (regardless of how it occurs) is a good thing. A growing population for the Cincinnati MSA allows the city and region to attract new things that it may not have been able to before. We have an IKEA under-construction, and that is an example of what I'm saying. Not only that it gives the major league franchises a better chance to succeed by experiencing a growing fan base. It may be crap growth, and certainly it is bad for our built environment and all of that stuff. But a growing population and economic base allows for a region to grow and attract new and different things. Hopefully you guys understand what I'm saying....and don't go crazy over this. Jesus, you and that IKEA. Why don't ya move to West Chester so you can shop there everyday and get it out fo your system. It's a f'n Swedish Wal-Mart. Example: The IKEA in Potomac Mills, VA is next to a Wal-Mart. I can't tell the difference between the two with all that surface parking. ;)

Harpers Ferry rated one of the most endagnered battlefields
In 10-15 years Harpers Ferry will be surrounded by office parks and strip malls irregardless of what the Park Service does here. W.Va. is planning to build an expressway from CharlesTown to the VA state line...pretty close to Harpers in order to alleviate traffic.

No the insulting part is ONCE A WEEK. what kinda shit is that?? Putting a 75 (or so) minute flight on a regional jet out of any airport is cost affective. I would rather have multiple departures A DAY instead of one 737 jet a day. It's the same sh!t they serve to Albequerque. I guess re-uping Seattle to year-round was just to much for CAL to offer decent service anywhere else.

Cleveland Metro Migration numbers
Medina Co. is part of the Cleveland MSA...while Summit Co. is part of the Akron MSA. I'm assuming that's why you don't see migration numbers for say Medina, Lorain or Ashtabula (all part of the Cleveland MSA), but you do for Sandusky and Akron (which aren't).

Cleveland Metro Migration numbers
I was thinking the same thing too...I mean if you live in Brecksville and then buy a house across the road in Richfield Twp., you've effiectively "migrated".

I-68 is like night vs. day compared the Pa. Turnpike, even if it means going over hills as opposed to around and through them.

Ohio and Region Airport Passenger Numbers 2005 vs. 2006
With the exception of Detroit and Akron-Canton, every one of these airports listed are now underserved and have plenty of extra capacity. CVG got hammered by Delta cutbacks. Likewise with PIT and USAir. Continental is very cautiously growing CLE. Dayton posted a large gain due to AirTran expansion. Akron-Canton is leveling off as AirTran focuses on other cities, but has been has gone through one helluva transformation thanks to that airline's expansion there, it averaged 500,000 pax/yearly as recently as 1995. If SkyBus gets off the ground...CMH numbers should grow quite a bit this year. CMH has already served around 10 percent more passengers for the first two months of '07 compared to '06 without Skybus. Detroit became the largest NW hub in '06 due to a 4% decrease of pax at Minneapolis.

Ohio and Region Airport Passenger Numbers 2005 vs. 2006
The source is from the airport's websites themselves, except Detroit which I used from the Airport Councils International, and Cleveland...I could only find a total from November (the total was already at 11.4 million) via a news story on another Hopkins UO thread, so I divided the total into 11 and low-balled it. I didn't want to hide the source....it was a just a bit complex to come up with this. There is no be-all and end-all source.

Are you 100% accurate in saying those are "added" jobs or they "replacement" jobs for the employees of USAir who "lost" their "jobs" when USAirways downsized as a result of SW moving in? BWI's total operation is 25 percent larger than it was in the early 90's (the peak USScare years). So yeah...it's safe to say they added jobs. I mean even if USScare and SW are a wash and I find that highly unlikely....BWI's international operation has expanded extensively. Hell, they have a non-stop to Greenland starting this spring.

Ohio Turnpike
Pretty much....I mean they have great service plazas and the regular signage has improved quite a bit..but many parts of the PA turnpike aren't in great shape. For example, large sections of the turnpike's call boxes don't work, and OK pavement around the Pittsburgh area is sketchy at best. Penn DOT spent over a year making this 'beautiful' interchange at the Butler Valley exit but for the most part the expressway is still a mess. And there is an incredible waste of construction signage on the Turnpike. There's one section, east of New Stanton that says 55....then right lane out ahead...then 65...then 55...then right lane out ahead...then 65...and yet there isn't a construction vehicle or even a barrel in sight in this area. It's pretty damn silly. By the way, I'm all for Ohio and Indiana getting E-Z Pass, I just wish Pa. would actually do some real improvements to it's highway, outside of interchanges, service plazas and toll booths.
