Couldn't find the appropriate thread: Airport's short-term parking rates double By Joanne Huist Smith Staff Writer Friday, March 23, 2007 DAYTON — Maximum rates for short-term parking at Dayton International Airport have more than doubled to discourage motorists from using the lot for overnight and long-term stays. The short-term, open-air lot was designed for airport patrons dropping off or picking up passengers, or for stays of several hours. Because the rate was low, $1 per hour or $12 per day maximum, people ignored posted signs that declared 'no overnight parking,' " airport spokeswoman Sharon Sears said. Airport officials hope the increase in maximum parking rates to $25 per day for the short-term lot will be a more effective deterrent than the signs. In comparison, patrons of the Port Columbus International Airport also pay a $25 maximum for short-term parking, but that service is in a garage. Dayton's hourly parking rate, at all airport lots, also has increased from $1 per hour to $2. Bargain hunters will still find the cheapest daily maximum rate at the Dayton airport in the economy lot, $5 per day or $30 a week. Maximum parking rates at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport remain in line with Dayton's former rates, $12 a day for short-term and $7 a day for long term. 2. Pope, I believe most of your trips are to MI right? Both Jersey and Ohio charge less for similar distances. The difference between those two states and the Pa. Turnpike is like comparing a US road to a Mexican one. If it didn't add two hours of burning fuel....I would gladly take I-79 to I-68 every time. Of course I-79 is mess too....especially south of Washington, Pa. to the W. Va. state line.
  3. Don't you think that might be a bit harsh, KJP? Mr. Smith has been quite diligent and staightfoward about previous airport leaders and their staff with their handling of non-payment of taxes that has likely cost the airport millions of dollars. There also seemed to be a fair amount of illegality with contract issues as well. He has accused noone of wrong doing, yet I believe the man is being very diplomatic. Clearly something strange was going on. Meanwhile you're comparing him to a Chinese politican because he changed an employee parking lot to a revenue one? Mind you, the move was to INCREASE revenue for the city. My question is, where was City Council oversight on this issue that cost the airport so much money? Maybe Kevin Kelley, chairman of the Aviation and Transportation Committee knows: 601 LAKESIDE AVENUE, ROOM 220 CLEVELAND, OH 44114 (216) 664-2843 • (216) 664-3837 fax Ward 16 office: 4442 State Road Cleveland, Ohio 44109 (216) 351-7077
  4. I wouldn't grrr that much. The Ohio State line to Breezewood (151 miles) -- $11.25. God help ya if you have to drive to Philly.

  6. This has nothing to do with the topic. It's quite on topic, one backhanded slam deserves another. :)
  7. Yeah, SI said Cleveland will win the Central, 7th overall. Lose to the Yankees in the divisonal round. The Washington Post has the Indians 2nd in the AL Central behind Detroit battling with the Yankees for the WC spot. The Reds 3rd in the NL Central, the Pirates last. Athlon sports has the Indians 4th. Everything I've read has some combination of Tigers, Indians, White Sox and Twins in different orders. All are agreed the Royals will finish last.
  8. Lawmaker: Airport chief skirted law Says Smith bypassed council on project Thursday, March 29, 2007 Susan Vinella Plain Dealer Reporter Cleveland's airport chief was accused Wednesday of intentionally skirting City Council to complete work on a new taxi pickup area, a violation of city law. The work, which includes a new wrought-iron fence, lights, sliding glass doors, curbs and road repair, is a significant improvement that requires council approval, Councilman Kevin Kelley said at a meeting of his Aviation and Transportation Committee. Airport Director Ricky Smith disagreed. "It's routine work that we do every day," he told Kelley, noting that a city attorney advised him he could proceed without council approval. But the attorney, Jack Arnold, told the committee that he was unaware of all the improvements Smith had planned. Arnold said that had he known the scope of the work, he would have advised Smith to obtain council approval. "To the extent of what I understand has been done," Arnold said, "I would have considered it a public improvement." Smith said he completed the work on a former employee parking lot near the terminal at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport with money from maintenance contracts that council already had approved. He said he did not know how much was spent or who did the work, but he promised to get that information to Kelley soon. 9. The real question should be, when will Pennsylvania actually do something constuctive with the toll dollars collected on the Pa. Turnpike? My guess, after driving the Pa Turnpike from the Ohio state line to Breezewood over the past 15 years, is "no".

Passenger boardings up at Dayton Airport By Dayton Daily News Tuesday, March 06, 2007 DAYTON — Passenger boardings at Dayton International Airport increased 7 percent in 2006 over the prior year and were up by 10 percent in January over the same month in 2006, the airport administration reported on Tuesday. Aircraft operations — takeoffs and landings — were down 9 percent in 2006 from the year before, and fell by 10 percent in December and 7 percent in January. That category was affected by United Parcel Service's closing in June 2006 of its air freight hub at the airport, which eliminated about 1,210 jobs there at the former Emery Air Freight facility. There were 1.3 million boardings during 2006, compared with 1.22 million for 2005. In December 2006, the total of 105,315 was a 4 percent improvement from 101,220 in December 200, the administration said. In January of this year, the total was 100,491, up from 90,968 a year earlier. The increased passenger traffic indicates that Dayton International remains a viable regional alternative to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport and Port Columbus International Airport, said Sharon Sears, spokeswoman for the Dayton airport. 11. Cuyahoga, Alleghany (Pittsburgh), Wayne (Detroit) and Cook (Chicago) all ranked in the top 10 terms of in total people moving out of these counties. But in terms of percentage I doubt any of the four cracked the top 50. A large swath of counties in the high plains from west Texas to North Dakota lost roughly 2-8% of their population due to deaths and out-migration due to larger farms that need fewer people. It's also easy to drop a high percentage in these counties if as few as 30 people disappear in a county of 400.
  12. Fitch Rates Columbus Regional Airport Auth, Ohio $60.8MM 2007 'A'; Outlook to Positive NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Fitch Ratings assigns an 'A' rating to the Columbus Regional Airport Authority (the authority), Ohio's approximately $60,780,000 airport revenue refunding bonds, series 2007, scheduled for negotiated sale during the week of March 26 through a syndicate led by Morgan Stanley. The bonds are secured by the net revenues generated by the operations of Port Columbus International Airport (the airport) and Bolton Field. Proceeds will refinance a portion of the authority's outstanding debt. Fitch also affirms the 'A' rating for the authority's $45.5 million of outstanding airport revenue bonds. The Rating Outlook is revised to Positive from Stable. Full Story: http://home.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20070316005768&newsLang=en

  14. According to someone posting on Wikipedia.....Continental will start CLE-YQB (Quebec City) service, once daily, on June 8th. No CAL announcement though.
  15. In addition to new Houston-Heathrow service in 2008, Continental has also announced that it will inaugurate service to Paris in 2008 from the airline`s hub at Cleveland where it operates seasonal service to London/Gatwick. The airline is working with the City of Cleveland to establish the necessary facilities at Hopkins International Airport in time for the launch of the Paris route. Under the SkyTeam alliance, passengers on the Continental flight to Paris will make convenient connections to other points around the world on Air France flights from its Paris hub. http://www.traveldailynews.com/new.asp?newid=36277&subcategory_id=53

Skybus is at least two months from starting ops. But it may not launch until the summer...or the fall...or the winter...or even later...it's all up to the FAA/Skybus at this point: http://www.dispatch.com/dispatch/contentbe/dispatch/2007/03/15/20070315-F1-01.html
  17. CLE needs reliable 767 service first that could go non-stop to Europe before even thinking of the 380. Gotta live the PD on this one though.
  18. 3231, It's not the debt that's the issue. It's the airport landing fees. If they are using the airlines to pay of the a greater proportion of the debt than in say CVG, CMH or PIT, then airlines will be reluctant to start new services at CLE and will go to other airports. If CLE can't get new flights, then there won't be more passengers, meaning less revenue for the city, vendors, etc.
  19. from the appearance of things, somebody goofed on the brake modulation, and the right-side brakes got a little grabby, or else the plane touched down ever so slightly tilted to starboard... either of these situations could cause the yawing seen in the video, which is further amplified by the sheer size of this damn aircraft... what's the over/under on when the first one goes kaboom? every "turrist" with access to a shoulder-launched SAM has got to be salivating... Jetdog, I saw the same yaw landing problem with this fat-ass plane when it landed at LHR last fall. I don't know if it's a A380 problem or a pilot training issue, but it if keeps landing like that...these planes will be out-of-service with maintenance issues alot longer than any of the airlines intended.
  20. Noozer, Moving commercial aircraft is no means like moving military aircraft. A wide variety of military aircraft can recieve clearance in weather above and beyond anything commercial. The weather on the east coast on that Friday was horrendous. If there are any METAR's reporting moderate ice pellets, moderate freezing rain or heavy snow almost all commerical airlines will not allow aircraft to takeoff or land, even flights that are to be ferried to make up for operational delays. DCA, IAD, BWI, PHL, JFK, LGA, BDL and BOS all had multiple hours of either moderate freezing rain or moderate ice pellets before changing to light/moderate snow. Even if conditions had improved by arrival to allow her aircraft to land....the aircraft she was to take to MCO could very well have been stuck in BOS or someother place and could not recieve clearance due to the 3+ hour ground delay program that Philly had. (By the way, none of this information is secret, you can get accurate hourly airport weather reports at www.nws.noaa.gov and you can find airport/commercial airspace delay information at both fly.faa.gov and at www.fly.faa.gov/ois/. DON'T EVER check an airline website even if those morons in the media advise it...call the reservation center. They can give you the most up-to-date info.) If there was no aircraft to be "found", I highly doubt this was an "union issue". The plane was probably literally was stuck somewhere else and USAir router in Phoenix was probably trying to see if there was an existing aircraft at PHL that could handle the flight. That being said, I don't care how busy it is, if a USAir employee was rude to your daughter, you should let someone know. If you don't like the results, I would complain to the U.S. DOT. If USAir was not giving you any information, you need to make sure you get the names of the employees involved. If they refuse, ask to speak to supervisor. If they refuse that request, go to another counter or gate that is not busy and ask them to get one and the names of the people. My only suggestion for you and your daughter, don't start the conversation by picking a fight. Be polite/move on, if you are polite eventually you find someone equally so, who will help you. It may feel like pulling teeth and you might have to go through 20+ people to find this person, but they are there (even with the USAir folks in Philly) and they will help. If you need any additional info Noozer, feel free to PM me. I hate it when idiots from one airline help to make us all look bad.

That alley-oop was freaking ridiculous. It reminded me of when Kenny Lofton used to play 3/4th of the outfield and would slide in front of Albert Belle and make the catch.

^^ That was another nice win. Since the All-Star break the Cavs have a quite a few quality wins: Detroit on the road, Houston at home with Yao, the thumping of Toronto. All this talk from the national media of LeBron half-assing it through the season has silenced pretty fast. Even though LBJ is playing alot better, the entire team is also stepping up. Hughes, while not amazing, is at least shooting around 50% lately, even Z has stopped being so timid/lazy under the basket. I can't say enough about Sasha's play over the last month either. If they keep playing like this, we'll get the #1 seed from Detroit. That's a big if with this team though. They streak and slump with the best of 'em.

What's kinda interesting from the article is that new growth has shifted away from Medina County/SW Cuyahoga Co. and back into Lorain. The two fastest growing burbs in the metro are Avon Lake and N. Ridgeville, according to the report. For the longest time it had to have been either Strongsville, Brunswick or Medina.

Anyone see Z trip up Yao Ming in the game last night? Funniest moment of the Cavs season so far.
  25. If you get off at Dupont Circle, you'll get to take the longest escalator ride this side of Dulles Airport. If the escalators are broken, which was a recurring theme last summer, good luck! The Windsor Park is fine, if you are into budget travel. In fact, I'd argue if you want a true DC city experience you'd be better off staying there than say the Hay-Adams or some higher-end hotel located closer to the monuments. Like Dan said, it's proximity to Adams Morgan is worth it from that aspect. If you got more time to kill I'd even venture up to Columbia Heights. If you stay at the Days Inn near Van Ness and UDC.....you can stock up on supplies at Safeway! You're about 3 minutes from the Zoo via metro. Also if you're stay up in that 'hood....check out the National Cathedral. It's a bit of a hike, but worth it.
