Public Transit Question - How to manage the homeless?
KJP summed it up the best. Metro's way around this problem is two-fold: First, build the rail sections to the richer neighboorhoods/suburbs first. Then, when finally forced to build to the poorer sections of town...have Metro police/adiministrators harrass and make rules that makes it very difficult for homeless to ride it. Some of the homeless used to at least stay at the top of platforms to stay warm...now they're being kicked out of there as well. There's also a third plan being implimented. It's called the SmartTrip card. It costs $5 to buy...and if you lose it or it gets scratched...you get to pay $5 again! You can get it replaced by going on to the Metro's website...but again...DC or it's burbs don't want homeless in the libraries (where these folks can get Internet access). And good luck with that home address! I understand Metro's logic though, if I'm a rich white person taking the Red Line to NW, I don't need to be reminded that there are poor/homeless people in the city. I mean, c'mon, this is one of the "creative centers" of the world. Shouldn't the homeless/poor move to Baltimore or Philly? That's why one of the many reasons I have little love for this area.

Wayne County arena football team
I apologize now to the SW Ohio folks...arena football is now poping up everywhere. :) Cooper, Rumble ready to trim roster Email To A Friend Printer Friendly Comments January 23, 2007 By BRYAN SCHAAF Daily Record Sports Writer MEDINA -- The opening day roster for the inaugural season of the Wayne County Rumble is nearly set. Wayne County's expansion arena football team held its minicamp on Sunday at Pinnacle Sports in Medina. There, coaches evaluated some 50-plus players who were hand-picked from four previous open tryouts in an attempt to finalize the team's 25-man opening day squad. "It makes it tough on the coaches because there's so much talent, so much heart and so much effort out there, but we can only hold so many on the roster," said Rumble coach Moe Cooper. "You get into a situation where you're kind of butting heads. You have a couple guys who are good players, but some of them have to go. We want to make the right choices and try to bring a great team to Wooster." Article continued here: http://www.the-daily-record.com/news/article/1511312

Potential Northwest-Delta Merger
USAir not only had Pitt and Philly, they operated a major station out of BWI. I never understood USAir at all. In my humble opinion, it's the worst of the majors even after the merger. United makes some strong attempts at times to take that crown though.

Potential Northwest-Delta Merger
Rage...who knows? Even the experts don't know, they're just trying to get some pub. I'd be very surprised if Cincy lost it's hub status. As long as CVG remains a fortress, it should stay strong. One thing for sure....the NW/Delta merger would create a very ugly hub structure.....Atlanta, Detroit, Cincy, Minneapolis, JFK, Memphis, SLC. Just like USAir had too many East Coast hubs....this 'new' airline will have too many in the middle of the country.

Cleveland housing tax abatement
Wouldn't it better to do this in when the downtown residental district is better established, in say 5 or 10 years? I would think at some point there will be that "critical mass" point where developers couldn't threaten to take this action, due to demand and profits. I have a feeling the city is making the right decision, just at the wrong time.

I love the AirTrain from JFK. It was one big pain in the ass to get to the subway at Jamaica or Howard Beach before that line was built. I wish the city would build one from LGA to the 7 train.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
There was a stretch, until the wheels came off in Milwaukee, where all 5 Central Division teams had a better record than all 5 Atlantic teams. And somehow a team that wins 40-43 games in the Atlantic is going to get a #3 seed, while a team in the Central or Southeast is gonna win the same amount of games and get stuck with a #6 or #7. I like X's idea...you win half or less and still win the division you forefit the #3.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
^(some form of Cavs trash talk regarding LeBron and Hughes playing to better form in the second half) My other NBA comment, isn't it time to fold the Atlantic division?
-
Cleveland Cavs Discussion
The Cavs ended up going 7-4 on their worst part of the schedule (4-0 in that 4 games in 7 day stretch, and 3-4 on the west coast swing). They still managed to hang on to the #1 seed, although the Wiz are tied with them now. Let's hope with the worst part of the season behind them they can start stretching their lead in the Central. :)

Akron-Canton Regional Airport
Press Release Source: Akron-Canton Airport Akron-Canton Airport Sets All Time Passenger Record in 2006 Thursday January 18, 6:00 am ET GREEN, Ohio, Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- What do a musical staff, the atomic number for boron, and the Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) have in common? The number five! In 2006, Akron-Canton Airport broke its all time passenger record for the fifth consecutive year. Though a musical staff and boron are forever stuck with the number five, the airport hopes to continue the streak in 2007. For the year, 1,438,304 total (O/D) passengers used CAK, a .3 percent increase compared to 2005. "It's exciting to have another winning year," said airport director Fred Krum. "Customers continue to appreciate our every day low fares and attention to customer care. We look forward to welcoming even more passengers in 2007." The airport dedicated its new, spacious, four-gate passenger concourse and celebrated its sixtieth birthday in October 2006. The opening of the new concourse also marked the completion of the airport's $60 million, five-year STAR expansion project. Other elements of STAR included longer runways, a new baggage claim wing, additional car parking, and a new Arby's and Great Lakes Brewing Company brew pub. Additional information including flight reservations, driving instructions, and a relaxation station is available at www.akroncantonairport.com, CAK's new web portal. Dan, Do you live in DC? The city has population of 570,000 due to the Census correction. Mind you a year after those revisted numbers DC lost 1,500 residents according to the latest Census numbers. It was just a correction. The population loss continues. Mind you..even with all the condos downtown...the fastest growing area in the DC metro is Loudoun County. DC thine name is really Ohio. But according to your past logic...it's ok to rip up farmfields as long the city is healty. Like DC dosen't have any empty lots. Your hand and mine are in the same problem. Difference is I already know this area is already f'd...I hope Ohio cities find a better model. I'll be looking forward to your manifesto...and helping to correct your 'facts'. BTW, if you live in Capitol Hill your closest mall is Iverson Mall in PG county. Not surprising you thought it was Arlington :)

Math, how is building a 300,000 ft. square building with surface parking in suburban Cincinnati environmentally friendly? I'm not expert on this subject....but I think Target has been more on the ball in building smarter/cleaner than IKEA. I'm sure it's a fine place to work, but again, IKEA isn't exactly helping city workforces by building in the outer 'burbs. It's more options for college kids and soccer moms looking for some extra cash. Just to bring it back on point again: Outside of KJP, I really haven't heard anyone against this project propose something different. What would have been the ideal new construction for this site?

Which I've also said is a P.O.S. development. No dance needed, but I'm really tired of the unsubstantiated "urbanism is only for the rich" suggestions. Brentwood is needed. It's tax reciepts that were going to PG county. Not everything can be a condo with a Whole Foods on the ground floor. Unsubstantiated? What fantasy land are you living in? Is it coinsidence that DC's murder rate nearing a 20 year low...while PG county is setting records every year. Is it concidence that the poverty rate is declining in DC...while increasing in PG county? Are you saying the Post, Census Bureau and the FBI are making these stats up? Seriously, if you want to ignore this stuff that's fine with me. But, unsubstantiated...please...read the Metro section once in a while. I'm not being "holier than thou", I'm being a realist.

Brentwood Rd. NE, Dan. I'm not dancing with you on that again. So you are saying we should take the DC mentality...kick the poor out to let the rich in? I think Cleveland can do better than that. Same with Detroit, Pittsburgh and Cincy.

CNN City Rankings
The last WHO statistical estimate I saw....even with 'native' born.....mind you that includes 2nd-generation immigrant families that have a tendency to have more kids than say 3rd- or 4th- generation, the US would grow about 2-3 million every 10 years. With not nearly as many 2nd-gen immigrant families in Europe's total's 'native' born stats, it makes the birth rate more skewed. This one is all about immigration, of which I don't mind the open door policy. It's one of the handful of things that has set us apart from Europe in a better way.

Well what would be 'well done' for the 30 percent of the city living below the poverty line. It easy to rip on Wal-Mart or Home Depot from a political standpoint if you are making $50K+ a year. (And i'm not implying you are W. 28th, just that it's been done on this thread before) But if you've been unemployed...it's a job opening where there wasn't one before. Could it be prettier...yeah...but look at what is surrounding the strip mall. Who in the hell is gonna start new urbanism there. :)

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
Fewer flights, more passengers at region's airports Saturday, January 06, 2007 April McClellan-Copeland Plain Dealer Reporter There were fewer takeoffs and landings at Cleveland Hopkins International and Akron-Canton airports last year, but more passengers were on those flights. At Hopkins, there were 229,386 takeoffs and landings through November 2006, down from 250,000 during the same period in 2005, said spokeswoman Pat Smith. At the same time, Hopkins' passenger count increased slightly from 10,428,447 through November 2005 to 10,572,686 last year. "What this means is that the airlines are scheduling fewer aircraft more to capacity, versus flying aircraft that are not filled to capacity," Smith said. At Akron-Canton, takeoffs and landings were down 4 percent from 109,350 through November 2006, compared with 113,893 takeoffs and landings in 2005, said assistant director Rick McQueen. McQueen said the passenger count for 2006 increased just slightly from the previous year's 1,430,000. The Associated Press contributed to this story. My guess is about 11.7 mill pax for the year (December traditionally a heavier travel month). Not bad, fourth consecutive year of increases for CLE. Still below the record levels of the late 1990's though.

Yet IKEA isn't located in Detroit, Cincy or Pittsburgh. Same with the two in DC and Balt....all in burbs. At least Wal-Mart and Target are building in the city limits. Why is IKEA so highly regarded...it's just more strip mall trash.

The fact of the matter is...SYC...will probably do more for Cleveland's poverty numbers than anything being built downtown. And that's a very good thing. DC's idea of eliminating poverty is not to create lower-end jobs...but to price the housing market out of reach for even middle class individuals. Poor individuals aren't getting richer in DC...they're moving to PG county. It's the big red herring in the room that Dan and his Capitol Hill neighbors have always ignored. :)
