  1. According to old Wiki....that's not necessarily the case. It's C-land and C-bus and no one else. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Cities But again, I made an assumption about Cincy and Pitt. That's my bad. All I know...a helluva alot of people I encountered in Japan/England know about ole C-land one way or another. I never say I'm from Cincinnati or Pittsburgh...so I probably never will know the popularity of those places over there. I'm sure that there are international travellers from those places that could tell us. :)
  2. Cleveland was at the epicenter of the last recession. It's nice to see it's recovering well from that time. The amount of bad press/negative views Cleveland gets, it's amazing that $4.5 billion gets spent there. But Cleveland also had the most incredible PR campaign ever in the 90s... with the whole "Cleveland Rocks" thing and the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame and the Flats (which everyone outside of Cleveland still thinks exists) and Drew Carrey. At least from my experience... Cleveland had a rather positive perception amongst the general population (much more so than Pittsburgh or Cincinnati). And though Columbus is now approaching Cleveland's metro in population... Cleveland has always been perceived as offering more of a "big-city" experience with its theaters, museums and other attractions... which is why I'm surprised it doesn't compete with Columbus concerning tourist dollars. Rant on>> When was there ever a PR campaign for Cleveland and the Rock Hall? The HOF folks never wanted the museum in Cleveland. It took a grass-roots effort of monumental proportion to get it there. The HOF folks wanted it in LA, NYC, Memphis and all other sorts of places. But the people in Cleveland damn near willed it to the city when there was the "balloting" for where the Rock Hall would be. Cleveland put up three times the votes of the second place finisher -- Memphis. Even when it was decided, Rolling Stone magazine went on a tirade about putting it there. I'll never forget an mid-90's interview with that Swan-wearing no-talent Bjork when they asked her what she thought of Cleveland. She said there was no difference between C-land and small town Utah. Then on top of all that crap, the HOF folks still have the induction ceremony in NYC. They bitched and moaned for the first five years about declining attendance numbers, although I believe it's turned that corner much to their surprise. PR campaign, my ass. As for other preceptions of Cleveland, lets be honest: The river caught on fire 35 years ago. The mayor's hair caught on fire 30 years ago. No Cleveland team has won shit in 40 years. The Browns move to Baltimore and win a SB 5 years after they left. Unfortunately, Cleveland is still associated with loser. When the Browns played the Skins in a preseason game a few years back. The Skins pre game show announcer referenced "The Mistake by the Lake" four times. "Major League" which is still shown like clockwork, while entertaining as shit, makes Cleveland out to be a dump. Likewise with "American Splendor". "Antoine Fisher" shows the beauty of San Diego...and makes Cleveland look like a crime ridden s-hole that you must flee in order to have a better life. Oh yeah, lets not forget the "Mistake by the Lake". While Pittsburgh gets the "The Steel City" moniker and Cincinnati gets the "The Queen City", we are relegated that stupid crap. And yet somehow, according to you, Cleveland is looked upon as better by the general population? Drew Carey is another example. NBC didn't believe the show would believe his show would work because it was based in Cleveland. He had to damn near beg ABC to base the show in Cleveland. Both networks thought Chicago would be "more believeable". As far as I know it's the only TV show in the past 25 years based in Cleveland....and it took someone from Cleveland to make it happen. Pittsburgh on the other hand gets shown in a fair amount a flicks and as used as backdrop city on TV shows all the time. "The Guardian" being the last. Cincy gets the screw as much as Cleveland in that regard. Living somewhere outside Ohio, do you know what's it like when someone asks you where you're from and then when you say it you almost have to wince because you don't know what stupid crap is gonna come out of their mouth? It's more than just that stupid Red-state hick crap. There's "Did they put the fire out?", "Aren't you glad you live here now" and of course "I'm sorry". The last response usually gets a "f#ck you" from me and the subject is dropped. The only people not from Cleveland who have ever said anything positive about the place, in my experience, are people that lived there for a period, who ususally say "it's not nearly as bad as I had heard." No shit! The only advantage to having Cleveland shit on all the time, is that people know where it is. (Probably more so than Pitt or Cincy.) And it's not just in the US, but throughout the world. When I go to Japan, I'd say 9 out of 10 people know Cleveland (mostly from "Major League", and that Japanese gay porn-star pitcher the Indians had for a while.) I find it really hard to believe that Cleveland is coming out neutral in these polls. Maybe it is, but I have yet to see it in my experience living outside Ohio.
  3. Yeah, well now that DC "grew" from figures released about 6 months ago, some of its residents are demanding that schools stay open that that city wants to close which are 20 percent full in anticipation of further "growth". The mayor yaks on about how DC will have 800,000 residents (matching it's peak in 1950) by 2020. Frugality which helped DC get stable in the first place is going out the window, and I wonder if DC is headed for a fiscal repeat of the 80's and 90's. I'm not saying Cincy is heading down that road....just an example here of how a blessing can become a curse. :)
  4. If it puts a positive light on things, that's great. I just think Cleveland and Cincinnati have very similar problems and that these new census numbers can be a curse, not a blessing. Some people will see this news in Greater Cincinnati and think "problem solved". I think we all know that's far from the truth.

  6. Port Columbus adding spaces, parking options Saturday, November 04, 2006 Tim Doulin THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH An employee of ProTek Park Systems watches a plane take off while he assembles parking shelters in Port Columbus’ Blue Lot. The airport plans to have 1,400 new spaces by spring. Port Columbus is adding more places for travelers to park before they fly, anticipating that a new airline will increase business. The Blue Lot, one of the airport’s three long-term public parking lots, will have about 1,400 more parking spaces by spring. This month, the lot will begin shuttle service that picks up passengers at their vehicles, rather than at shelters throughout the lot, and 570 covered parking spaces will be unveiled. A new lot on 17th Avenue and Stelzer Road will add up to 4,000 parking spaces. Skybus Airlines, a Columbus carrier, is scheduled to start flying in 2007. "Therefore, we anticipate a need for increased parking. … It is all related to growth in passengers," said David Whitaker, vice president of business development for the Columbus Regional Airport Authority. 7. Buckeye donuts are the best. Although with the way N. High is changing....it'll be knocked down for another crappy Starbucks in a few years.

I agree with OF. But isn't OF a bit pricey. Not CF pricey but more expensive than...say..Berea, Middleburg or Parma.

^^ I don't know....the Gobi, the Himalayas, the Altays, the Muslim uprisings in Xianing (Sp?) >> the province N of Tibet....I'd be really surprised if even a Chinese business man would invest there. Western China is alot different than Western North America.

Fair enough...I agree with that. I just brought up NR becuase it probably has the best public schools in the "region". That's all.

Speaking of OB, it's not a bad neighborhood. Are they still busing people all over Cleveland or is Rhodes the neighborhood school now?

Mayday - I thought you didn't go anywhere south of I-480 ;) Again, as KJP said.....this isn't about urban wants and needs. This person is working in Parma Heights. The only neighborhood that would make sense in the city is Old Brooklyn. Maybe if the job was located IN THE CITY...there would be better options like Ohio City and Shaker Square. There's an ideal and then there's reality. We can rant about sprawl all we want...but if the CITY dosen't attract more jobs how can you stop it?

The schools aren't bad in Parma. It's 50/50 college/no-college. Alot of people use that as benchmark. It's truly average. NR is something like 90/10. But there are significant income differences between the two cities, so that can skew the numbers. As for NR growth....I think NR has about 30,000 vs. Parma/Parma Hts. (same size in area) has combined population around 115,000. It grows at about 7K-10K every 10 years. Although to be honest, with Strongsville maxing out...the growth may come faster. That being said the Cleveland area isn't like the DC area..you won't see 34,000 homes built in 6 months in an area. Sprawl is much slower, which is one of the reasons I think Cleveland's metro "population stall" is far from a bad thing. MayDay is right....Berea is nice...have no idea about the schools. Same with Midpark High (Middleburg Hts.)...I hear it's good...but no personal experince with it. Also, Parma, NR, Berea, Middleburg, Seven Hills....are all very safe places. Not much in the crime dept.

When Gooden is being a bonehead (which will happen several times this season), everyone notices. But when he has a good day (and he'll have several this season) he's usually a major player in getting the Cavs a W. He was grabbing 2 offensive rebounds/a possession late in the game, which stopped the momentum of the Wiz late in the fourth. Eton played a helluva game too.

BTW, sparky, while I'm sure you're getting personal mail right now saying never live in North Royalton, there are affordable, MODEST homes there...mainly along the major roads. Ridge, State, Albion, to name a few. Royalton Rd. has several newer style condo's along it. And the views are incredible in some sections of central/southern NR. There's a valley that runs through southern half of NR where the Metroparks cut through. Not as nice as the views from Brecksville east of SR 21, but pretty cool nonetheless.

Lived in a home in the Twin Lakes area of Parma....it was very nice Tudor built in the 20's. Not all of Parma is post-war bungalows. Took the 51 and the Fulton Rd. (29?) bus downtown all the time. But a good chunk of Parma has no real transit options.

^^ Let me second you and you beat me to the punch, KJP. As a Parma boy....Lakewood, Cleveland Heights, Shaker Square...while fine places to live, aren't that convienent to PH. Middleburg has alot of townhomes/simple housing. If you're looking for a house in the 250-300K range, I'd also suggest North Royalton. I lived in PH/Parma...and let me tell you...it's not that bad. The attitudes of people there have sucked over the years, but they've been changing alot over the past 10 years. The biggest drawback is that the schools are truly average. North Royalton has nice schools, Strongsville does too, but the schools are a bit more crowded in Strongsville. Plus, transit to Parma pretty much sucks, so a car is almost guaranteed. Just more reason to live closer.

You can see the the development along the Trans-Siberian railroad. India-Pakistan-Bangladesh has power....but alot of their neighbors don't. Prudhoe Bay is almost as bright as Anchorage. Tokyo-Osaka-Fukouka looks like one large snake like metro. Istanbul looks pretty funky. Outside of North Africa, the only things you can really make out in the African continent are see Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Khartoum. Thank God Europe, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan aren't wasting power like the U.S. too. :)

Noozer, Fair enough and much apologizo. I'm actually with you guys about having a more balanced rail and air system. Brew >> It's not that that I have any issue with stating an opinion. It's just that sometimes things are posted about aviation that are more on the far side of truth. Statements like the "aviation industry as a whole are moving away from regional flights." A more correct statement would be the "aviation industry in the U.S. is moving away from regional flights". I tried to debate this before....but I got ignored. So I'm trying to find a nice way without getting into a pissing contest. I save that stuff for ColDayMan. ;)

Z hasn't had a glass foot in four years. He's actually been pretty healthy. His production at times is another matter. I agree with ya about Hughes...with a healthy and PRODUCTIVE Hughes they make it to the Eastern Conference Finals last year. I liked Gooden's performance against the Wiz....they had no answer for his offensive rebounding. This ought to be a fun season. If this team runs on all cylinders they are as good as anyone. Problem is they rarely ever do.

Gildone and Noozer, While I understand your disdain for things that fly in the air, repeating your opinions over and over on aviation threads isn't solving your goals for getting the ORDC/Ohio Hub implimented. I'm not gonna stop posting aviation stuff...so I don't know what to tell ya'. Thanks for listening. Domo Arigato Gosimasu. :)
