SkyBus launches / Sky Busts
Shouldn't this thread by moved to Biz and Economy as opposed to transportation. While it will add air service to C'bus....they are planning to add 1000 jobs to the Columbus market. This is more of a company thread than a general transportation one. Isn't it?

Cleveland: NASA Glenn Research Center News & Info
EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y., Nov. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Sensis Corporation is partnering with Federal and local government agencies as well as with leading aviation companies to identify and evaluate promising solutions for the transformation of the National Airspace System (NAS). Air travel is projected to grow substantially, doubling or tripling over the next twenty years. The current NAS must change substantially in order to safely accommodate such demand. Sensis, working with the NASA John H. Glenn Research Center, is collaborating with the FAA and the Joint Planning and Development Office to implement a Next Generation Air Transportation System (NGATS) Test Bed to evaluate these potential solutions. Also included are Barco, Honeywell, Lockheed Martin, and WSI Corporation... Copyright © 2006 PR Newswire. All rights reserved.

Republican Roll Call!
Terrorism in the Middle East and Africa didn't start with 9/11 or Munich or even Israel. It started way back at end of the 19th century. Europeans in their "enlightened" wisdom decided that they would decide the boundaries of countries throughout these regions with no regard to the population base. Gerrymandering to the nth degree, they split people with common beliefs into different countries. Unfortunately, when these people "won" their freedom, they immediately went to war with each other. India-Pakistan, Israel and everyone around them, countless African countries. And lets not forget that the Europeans pulled out without cleaning up the mess they made. They threw a piddling amount of cash at these countries and slammed the door. What little revenue these countries had when they became free, they spent on killing their neighbors. Now that most of these folks are beyond destitute, radical 'whatever' rules these regions. Good luck solving that!

Cleveland taxi cab stuff
I never had a proble mtaking people from the airport to places like Parma or Berea. The way I saw it, it would let me get back to airport sooner. Plus, the customers were always greatful to have a driver who would not complain about the short ride. I once had a fare to IX Jet Center from the airport. He was so surprised by my positive attitude, he gave me $35. You are a rare breed, Musky. Almost every time I've tried to get a cab from Hopkins to Parma, I either hear a bitch fest the whole way, get lied to about the meter being broken, or they refuse to take me. And the cab companies have the audacity to complain that the city wants to standardize service. Improve the product and the city wouldn't have to take this measure.

Cincinnati: Census Challenge(s)
LOL, I hear that. DC's largest employer is the Federal Govt. followed by the liquor industry. But #2 is making a run at #1. ;) I wish all liquor licenses were made equal--those arab corner stores could be shut down so easily and we could EASSILLYY solve the liquor license problem--one I know of in OTR, the dumbass that runs it always has an open styrofoam cup full of irish rose on his counter... They sell crackpipes and half the merchandise they sell is stolen. Top it off with the fact that they have no problem selling alcohol and cigs to underage kids. These stores are perpetuating the decline in these communities and people don't even realize the major role they play. Agreed. But you see the same crap in Cincy, Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh, DC, Philly, Brooklyn, Boston, Chicago, etc. It's easy money for the city where other economic development looks poor (in their opinion).

Downtowns making a comeback as places to call home
^^They built one leg of the bypass, I believe to the Merrimack River. The residents east of Nashua who live in Hudson, don't want anything to with that bypass. Hudson is at least kind of quaint....although it's getting swallowed up by development as Nashua is getting maxed out. The bypass would make Hudson look like Nashua pretty fast. Smart move on their part.

^^ You gotta be kidding. Not only do you have the Penn Line, you can take Amtrak from BWI to Union Station. That ranks up there with the "Silver Line" to Ashburn, in terms of wasted money.

Cleveland: Shoreway Boulevard Conversion
I guess the folks in Seattle didn't see what a mess the "Big Dig" did to Boston, along with "Big Dig 2": the project making I-93 go underground through downtown. Of course that is Mass DOT. :) I don't know Seattle that well so I'm wondering if the viaduct expwy. is that necessary. $1 billion sounds like another Big Dig debacle to me.

Old AmrapinVA replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & Entertainment^^ Arby's always seemed on the higher end of fast food to me. Their stores are clean and those Jamocha shakes are great. The question for me is: Is Steak N' Shake considered fast food...or a low end Denny's?

^Agreed. It's just another "extention" of the Red Line. It will take forever to get from Clarksburg to Downtown DC using the two lines. And if it takes too long...it won't convince people to stop using I-270.

Cincinnati: Census Challenge(s)
Before I start a word to ColDayMan. Don't think this is a Cincinnati vs. Cleveland thing...because I've had the same debate with DC people when their numbers were revised upward. The press really screws these stories up. I actually have a few friends that work for the US Census Bureau. They've told me that it dosen't mean a city with revised numbers "grew", it means that they have undercounted these cities for years. Cincy probably had a population closer to 350,000 at the turn of the millenia, not 330,000. The only reason they can't redo 2000 and decades earlier is because the manpower/money spent to figure out correct numbers isn't worth it, and cities could in turn go to Congress and demand "back payment" for Fed funds on projects. When I them asked about DC numbers and the fact that it "grew" this decade, they told me with a good amount of certainty this new baseline would begin shrinking immediately and that the city still had lost population since 2000, even though technically it grew. While it is certainly good news for the Queen City that the city is larger than previously thought...I would wait for 2010 before making a judgement on how much population was lost or gained this decade. But it will certainly leave Cincy out of the #1 ranking of population lost this decade. Again just some food for thought, and again not a bash on Cincy. Just throwing in what little tidbits I know.

Downtowns making a comeback as places to call home
^^Nashua is located on the New Hampshire/Massachusetts state line. It has a freeway (US 3) that cuts through the west side of town. It has an "old town" just like almost every city/town in New England, with a bunch of fabric mill/warehouse type buildings nearby. But 85% of Nashua is strip malls, subdivisions, five-story motels. New Hampshire has some pretty funky places...but Nashua ain't one of 'em. :)

SkyBus launches / Sky Busts
From the UK's Sunday Times (Oct. 29th): Ryanair boss heads west RYANAIR’S yield manager Jim McMahon has jumped ship to join forces with former colleague Charlie Clifton, an executive at Skybus Airlines, the low-cost start-up that expects to start flying next year, writes Joe Brennan. McMahon is lining up to carry out consultancy work on scheduling and yields for Skybus, which last week signed a deal to buy 65 A319 jets from Airbus. The deal, based on list prices, is valued at about €2.35 billion. Dubliner Clifton left Ryanair in 2001, having been at the low-cost carrier for 16 years, finally as director of ground operations and in-flight. He then went on to become interim chief executive at Tiger Airways, the Asian airline in which Tony Ryan, Ryanair’s founder, and his family have a 16% stake. Clifton had a key role in establishing Skybus, based in Columbus, Ohio. Founded by John Weikle, raising more than $100m (€78.5m) from investors, mainly from Wall Street firms such as Morgan Stanley and Fidelity. In addition, the City of Columbus and the Columbus Regional Airport Authority announced last month that they were stumping up $41m in financial assistance for the company, based on the expectation that it will create more than 1,000 jobs. Downtowns making a comeback as places to call home
Nashua is a suburb on the US 3 corridor of Boston/Lowell or Manchester depending on which side of town you live, not exactly a great "city" to use as an example of downtown growth, in my opinion. Hell if you can use Nashua, Hudson's downtown has seen tremendous growth too. ;)

SkyBus launches / Sky Busts
Is this Skybus's fault or it's investors, per se? Or is it a failure of how those leading the EIS plan are marketing it to possible investors? Just some food for thought.

While the A319 order is seen as a either a joke or an afterthought in most of these articles, at least Columbus is getting some major press: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/290184_airbus27.html http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/business/4291156.html http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-briefs27.4oct27,1,5708493.story?coll=la-headlines-business http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/chi-0610270209oct27,0,2945396.story?coll=chi-business-hed http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/10/26/business/airbus.php http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/27/business/worldbusiness/27airbus.html
