  2. In Crains: http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20090122/FREE/901229961 Cuyahoga County commissioners near convention center/medical mart decision By JAY MILLER COPYRIGHT 2009 CRAIN'S CLEVELAND BUSINESS 11:28 am, January 22, 2009 Cuyahoga County commissioners hope to settle on a site for the long-planned convention center and medical merchandise mart by Thursday afternoon, despite a last-minute effort by developer Scott Wolstein to have a site in the Flats, alongside his stalled mixed-use East Bank development, considered for the trade show complex. “I expect we will have a site and a development agreement (signed) by the end of the day,” commissioner Tim Hagan told Crain’s Cleveland Business at Thursday morning’s regular weekly commissioners’ meeting. The commissioners are meeting Thursday afternoon with executives of Merchandise Mart Properties Inc. of Chicago, the developer chosen for the complex, to review the company’s site analysis. The commissioners have scheduled a 2 p.m. press conference to discuss what comes next.
  3. Perhaps a recommendation/story from an authority of urban planning from an urban planning point of view..... Certainly there is someone from CSU/Levin that could give their "recommendation". Of course that wouldnt get any coverage by the pd. Maybe a television news story.....
  4. Heres some details for Miami: 2009 Fattest Cities: #1 Miami, FL A shocking revelation for this haven of hot bodies So much for the South Beach Diet. While Miami's nightlife and shores don't lack for buff bodies, the majority of residents should probably put a shirt on (61.5% of Miami residents are heavy enough to increase their risk for weight-related health problems). Though Miami has a high number of health-food stores per capita, it also has almost three times the fast-food restaurants as the average city. The area also has 79% more gyms and health clubs than average, but residents are less likely than average to regularly use their memberships. "Because we have year-round warm weather, many people opt to walk, run, or take part in outdoor activities for their fitness," says Kelly Penton, director of communications for the mayor's office. Actually, they don't. Miamians also scored poorly in motivation due to low participation rates in outdoor activities like biking, running, and fitness walking despite a relatively pleasant climate most of the year. The city's commute (50% more oppressive than average) and air quality (ranked the worst in our survey according to EPA standards) certainly don't help matters either. 6. Yeah I smell it... Apparently in Miami your either in really good shape or really obese. But Cleveland on the fittest list? With its culinary delights on nearly every corner and winter weather that would make anyone a couch potato? I'll take it..
  7. Thanks for doing that Mayday, saved me the trouble! :-D
  8. It can only be an improvement over the "unfriendly", friendly bookstore that was there. Hopefully with the new one, people will regret contributing to the fundraising efforts to keep the last one open when it couldnt pay its bills.
  9. "Yes some indian food would be great. SS needs A casual loungie/dinner would be great. Something along the lines of the Marathon Grill, Pod, Bump or The Continental in Philly. I love the continental." Yes, a Continental type place would be great (I also love the Continental!) or something like Flo that was in the Warehouse district, which I thought was a great concept, but it didnt make it (didnt know what it wanted to be.)
  10. Theres a few renderings of the Greenhouse tavern and the Erie Island Coffee Co. on the Cleveland Landmarks site here: http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/landmark/agenda/photo/010909/index.php

I was there and saw most of these stores just before Christmas and was a little disappointed in the decorations/windows. One definite exception was Bergdorf Goodman (the main store), it was gorgeous! Im also always blown away at how friendly people can be in NYC. From the excellent service to the people on the streets. I guess coming from DC its a given.
  12. Yes, they seem to do Christmas up right... very creative and unique.. I took a Christmastime trip to NYC and in comparison was rather disappointing.
  13. Lockskeepers is going back in (former owners). There is a pic of the Dante/tremont spot in the post somewhere (bank looking building). Edit: look on page 49, post 1442 by Mayday. .....by 3 seconds R@R
  14. I had the same experience when I was home this past week. My favorite, Melt, had too long of a wait so we opted to try out the Beer Engine and really enjoyed it. If you like beers you'll love it (they have like 30 on tap and many many more in bottles which apparently changes weekly. As far as food, nothing too spectacular, they did have many burgers but they also had many German foods on the menu, so I got the Chicken paprikash over spatzel which I thought was good. Certainly worth going to for the beer, but there may be better places for food. They had so many interesting beers, but nothing from Great Lakes, so we walked over to the Mars Bar after for some Xmas brew!

Lawson's chip dip! (You can get at Circle K stores)
  16. Looks like they are planning to tear down St. Peters Hall which I believe is the really cool building here and the one I really like (below center). If Im looking at this right, they want to leave the really ugly building! From the Cleveland Restoration Society agenda. http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/landmark/agenda/photo/121108/index.php# (plans are on site) St. Peter’s Hall Case 08-056 1724 Superior Avenue Demolition Ward 13 – Cimperman
  17. Yay! I havent seen any pictures for a while...... (hint hint)
  18. Exactly! further shows the importance of why it is necessary to be somewhat vocal/visual in regard to the state of things.
  19. I had to wonder the same thing. Certainly at this point any good adviser would have been pushing for such a statement, even if done from behind closed doors (apparently his style). Either way, it is very good to see that he has come out of "hiding" to show "something", when it is undoubtedly needed the most, given the current gloomy feeling in Cleveland. I had to agree with previous posters about his troubling absence. As MTS would say "how do you know what he is not doing anything", well we don't (which is part of the problem), and he may very well be a good mayor, but a great mayor is going to do what he can to make the people of his city know that he is fighting for them, not just for political reasons, but for the Psyche of the city and its people. Either way a well written statement and nice to see!
  20. ^ Wow, to actually hear it from a Pittsburgh paper. If that doesnt indicate poor and in-accurate/local negative journalism from the PD, then I dont know what does.
  21. Heres the scoop from the PD with Krazy Mac's (says they were doing well, and probably moving somewhere in Lakewood) Krazy Mac's closes Detroit Avenue location to concentrate on what it does best by Debbi Snook/Plain Dealer Reporter Tuesday November 25, 2008, 5:24 PM Hold the mac, and the cheese. Krazy Mac's Cafe, a mecca for the great melted American dish, closed its doors Saturday night and won't reopen at the same location, 5800 Detroit Ave., Cleveland. Owner Ron Heinbaugh, who has been through several venue changes in the last few years, said he was overwhelmed by the inventory demands of two menus -- Krazy Mac's 20 versions and dishes from the precursor, Snicker's -- as well as the size of the 10,000-square-foot restaurant. 22. Exactly Hts44121, they are going through this Tarp thing by the seat of their pants, there isnt a whole lot of logic to it. "Citibank is too large to allow to fail"... "they are getting the money to prevent panic".... Then the Feds should have broke up the company... Its really unfortunate that Cleveland will be a loser in regard to these questionable, inconsistent and illogical decisions.
  23. I believe they did away with their later hours and wine bar that was open later (or all together), can anyone verify...
  24. Also agree with Green Pastures here. Of course the Mayor and the city should be playing a factor here for exactly the reasons you stated, he (they) have a responsibility to act on behalf of whats best for the city. freethink I think most of us get and agree with what you are saying, dont trouble yourself over that one ...

Yes the airport locations seem to be the best as far as types of cars/selection etc. I got a Prius for my last drive back to Cleveland from the Alamo at National Airport, but they often dont have them, so you need to check for specific locations and days.
