Then I wonder why this is a big announcement? My impression was always that Cleveland was supposed to get about 800 new positions, even though questionable at times. PR for the city I guess.. And while Mr LaTourette, Nance and the Greater Cleveland Partnership received alot of credit here, I have to give some to John McCain. He was one of the initiators of the legislation for the 2005 round of closings (of course doing everything to spare the bases in Arizona) Because I had done some work with him and had access to talk to him, I informed him of the faulty numbers and rankings etc., (he knew my passion for Cleveland) so he got on the horn and made some strong recommendations that Cleveland's DFAS needed to be reassessed. Its hard to say exactly what impact he had though, but I was just impressed by his actions and think he does have substance. However, I'm much less impressed by him during his campaign and will not be voting for him.....

It should be only 200 more, with a total of 800-ish (600 already added..?)

More good news regarding DFAS! Defense agency keeps growing in downtown Cleveland -- to 2,011 jobs by 2011 Posted by Stephen Koff/Plain Dealer Washington Bureau Chief October 15, 2008 18:12PM Categories: Breaking News, Business Impact, Open, Real Time News Cleveland's federal payroll center, which in 2005 had nearly 1,200 white-collar jobs, will expand its Cleveland workforce to 2,011 employees by the year 2011, official are expected to announce Thursday. The announcement is a stark reversal from 2005, when civic and political leaders feared that DFAS, which handles payroll, pension and benefits processing for the Pentagon, would leave Cleveland. The Pentagon was examining ways to consolidate some of its military bases and offices across the country, and initial projections showed the Cleveland civilian center to be too expensive. ... www.cleveland.com
  4. No sorry! Yes typically it does shift around. Dupont and 17th street in DC are no longer really the gay ghettoes that they had the reputation for were here in DC, due mostly to the shifting of the gay population towards Logan Circle (the gays that had initially come in and redid the neighborhood have now cashed out and moved to east). Now the center is more U street and the 14th Street area.
  5. As a straight man...? I actually love the way it is and stated Cleveland has many gay friendly hoods, but the gays like to go somewhere that has a gay central feel to it (an active gay district)and are often disappointed when it isnt apparent.
  6. Wow MTS you seem especially nasty today...... Those outsiders that have not been to Cleveland do think that way, since that is what they have read. Yes TheCOV, those are things that would show Cleveland in a nice light, and I got the Cleveland style, since Cleveland is its own unique city, with unique assets. One thing that Cleveland has working against it in the gay world, (mostly for the outsiders that come to visit), is there isnt really a ground zero for gays, like many cities have (its Halstead street or what you would call the gay ghetto). I remember when I would have thought this was Clifton, but not so much now. There are lots of great and cool areas that are gay friendly, but not much of a district that they can hang out in. This is an issue for many things in Cleveland, too many districts of too many spread around things that unless they know about them, it doesnt always leave the best of impressions.
  7. According to Fuel gage report the national average is $3.35 a gallon for regular. http://www.fuelgaugereport.com/
  8. Drama at the Cadillac Ranch!!! Protestors greet Cadillac Ranch opening By JOEL HAMMOND/Crains 6:46 pm, October 9, 2008 Downtown Cleveland’s latest hotspot, country-western bar Cadillac Ranch located in the former May Co. building on Public Square, got off to something of a rocky start Thursday night. Hundreds of construction workers and other trade industry contractors protested the eatery’s grand opening by marching and gathering along Euclid Avenue, booing those who entered the restaurant’s “VIP” opening. The trade workers were protesting Cadillac Ranch’s decision to use nonlocal contractors on the project, according to Dennis Meaney, a business representative with the local electricians’ union. They also handed out fliers detailing health violations at the company’s locations in Nashville and Tempe, Ariz., citing those cities’ boards of health. The Public Square site is Cadillac Ranch’s fourth location, according to its web site; Cincinnati is home to the other. “This is a tough economy,” said Cleveland Cadillac Ranch owner Eric Shilder. “We opened the project to all bidders, and went with the best price.” Not true, said Mr. Meaney and electrician Mike Cala of Local 38, two of the few protesters willing to talk on the record. “They did not open it up to us,” Mr. Meaney said. “We had an electrician lined up, and told them, ‘We’d like to work with you.’ We never got an opportunity. “Yes, this is a tough economy," Mr. Meaney said. "But this is happening with too many jobs around here, and we’ve had it.” Mr. Cala said using nonlocal contractors affects the union locals down the road. “The best price is not the best labor, and that brings our standard of work down,” Mr. Cala said. “They exploit the best price labor. “We’re not going away.”
  9. Although Im guessing for the people in that building, more sh!ts than giggles!
  10. I don't think the summers are any worse than the summers in Cleveland. The humidity in both is unbearable. Summers are much worse here than in Cleveland. DC was built on a swamp, so it is often very soupy and stagnant here. It is typically 12-15 degrees warmer than cleveland, and with way more humidity and no lake breeze! I voted Chicago, great city in every way, with the people to match! I never loved living in DC. It is a great and beautiful place to visit, but living here is another story, and in general I think the people kinda suck here. Although it is coming around and becoming more of a real city since the last few years people have moved back into the city, and are starting to take more of a stake here, setting down roots (not only just a stop off point in someones career anymore) The restaurants and service here have gotten a little better as a result (and more different kinds of options). When I moved here nobody really cared that much, but thats starting to change.
  11. "What proof do you have, that backs up your claim, that Cleveland is more desperate than DC, Boston, Miami, Newark or Houston." I don't think there is any question that Cleveland is more desperate than many of these places. I know here in DC companies are moving here like crazy, they don't even really have to offer crazy incentives to get them here (even though I think Cleveland wins with regard to quality of life issues). DC also has a huge, young talent pool, and everything seems to just play off of each other and the city has been growing like crazy. "From the outset, Eaton's desire for a campus setting downtown posed a square peg-round hole dilemma". This is very true though. When they decided they had to have a campus it sort of gave Cleveland a huge disadvantage (by campus it apparently wouldn't have been acceptable to have a spot in gloomy midtown ) and they certainly were not interested in the Stark proposal which would have been ideal. I also give Wasserman credit here, since Eaton wanted the Flats space to be something that it really wasn't, and I also thought in the long run it wasn't really the best use.

I agree. And why waste the 140 Million repairing it, when they can alter the plan and put that towards a better single span.
  13. And again today up another 65.14% to 2.89! good news for everyone that bought on Monday (morning) http://moneycentral.msn.com/detail/stock_quote?Symbol=NCC 2.89 +1.14 +65.14%
  14. So what did he say about the story? Did he acknowledge somekind of mistake or try to justify it because they (at the PD) are not allowed to write a positive story about Cleveland. (ex. why was Medina county not included)
  15. As did I. This is most hilarious, as my sister and her family live in Brunswick and I make fun of it to them all the time, as they do. And yes they refer to it as Brunstuckey. But they live in a lovely subdivision with lovely neighbors..... (yawn) (I think they moved there for the cheap house in a new neighborhood, that didnt have Cuyahoga property taxes, yet they certainly take advantage of all that Cuyahoga County has to offer.... :?

I second these. Also Rockefeller Park would be great to explore (the cultural gardens and some of East Blvd.), take the bike trail to the lake and check out Bratenahl while your at it. Then there is the bike trail along the lake that will take you into downtown.
  17. I think it isnt a bad concept, but it just seems Cleveland has so many venues already that are underutilized.... Public/Music Hall...? Maybe not set up for what he was trying to do though.
  18. Exactly, and not necessarily pedestrian lights... (Is it possible they do not realize?)
  19. Does anyone have access to Crains this week online? Hopefully a good twist..... New twist in convention center price saga The developer of the planned convention center and medical merchandise mart is preparing to report to Cuyahoga County commissioners that the complex could be built on either of two sites under consideration for the same price.
  20. Brainstorming has been done and they have plenty of ideas. There are 3 plans for the station posted on the outside wall with other information about the history etc.. I would highly recommend if you havent been to Wendy park and walked over to see in person to do so. The 3 plans range from using for "natural" kind of purposes (museum/great lakes ecology) to "highly developed" with restaurant/boat docks etc. A quick google search I only found lots of pictures, but Im sure the plans can be found. Again only concepts until they can get enough interest and/or find funding mechanisms to do something. edit: posts on the previous page mention these plans. Read post #22
  21. Exactly! Well yeah, and Mr. Cutler (CEO of Eaton) was a donor towards his Congressional run..
  22. From Cleveland magazine a while back: Former Chair of Greater Cleveland Partnership... you wouldnt have guessed. Goes on to talk about his "commitment to the city" and the FEB developments. Funny. The Influentials: Alexander M. “Sandy” Cutler Chairman and CEO, Eaton Corp. Sandy Cutler did what no one else thought was possible: consolidate three major nonprofits with similar goals into one stronger organization. He is the former chair of the Greater Cleveland Partnership, which now includes the former Greater Cleveland Growth Association, Cleveland Tomorrow and its small-business arm COSE. The consolidation has saved about $15 million during the past five years. As the head of the largest Fortune 500 company headquartered in Cleveland, Cutler’s commitment to the city also extends to his business dealings...... http://www.clevelandmagazine.com/ME2/dirmod.asp?sid=E73ABD6180B44874871A91F6BA5C249C&nm=Arts+%26+Entertainemnt&type=Publishing&mod=Publications%3A%3AArticle&mid=1578600D80804596A222593669321019&tier=4&id=59CC5B44CD76445D92CA5F65C384AC03 And from an article about Eatons involvement in the United Way campaign. Maybe they will remain a vital part, just from a "safe" distance. "In part, the United Way goal illustrates that Cutler is well aware that Eaton is one of the area's oldest and largest corporate headquarters, and that the firm and its employees are viewed as a vital part of the community." "We feel it is more than an opportunity but an obligation to give back to our communities to ensure they stay sound, vital and dynamic, says Cutler. "We believe that talented people want to live and work in dynamic, safe communities."
  23. It also made it through U-circle design review, and that has several archetects on it.
  24. I agree. Isn't Hyde Park partially in an old bank / vault? Yes it is.... Anyone who hasnt seen this should check it out.. The vault a walk through the restaurant (towards the restrooms) and is a think a wine cellar with banquet rooms around it. There is also a direct connection into the Van Swinger.... lobby, that is open even when the outside entrance to the lobby isnt. A must see! (Oh and they have good steak too)
