That same ex-girlfriend graduated from Chalker a few years later. Also, she graduated with a girl that used to live in this house (before Tyson).

Yes Eaton apparently isnt yet a sure thing for the FEB. See FEB thread from this morning.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
I posted a piece from a Crains editorial and opinion by Brian Tucker below. Interesting that while the flats EB project is certainly a transformative project, one can certainly argue whether the Eaton Headquarters built there is a transformative/legacy project for downtown. Also, interesting that he mentions that the CEO is a "true believer in Cleveland" and "didnt shop his headquarters to other places, and wants to do a project that would benefit downtown" (hmm, a somewhat isolated campus). I got the idea that they so wanted a suburban type "campus" that if they didnt get the go ahead for the FEB spot that they were looking at places like Independence in order to have that. (what a benefit to downtown) THERE IS SOME talk swirling that the various governmental entities involved in the talks surrounding Eaton Corp.'s proposed move to a campus in the Flats aren't making things easy for this multinational company to finalize its deal. Eaton CEO Alexander “Sandy” Cutler is a true believer in Cleveland. He didn't play the game of shopping his headquarters to other places in order to wrest huge concessions from our city. He wants to do a legacy project that would have a huge benefit to downtown. Officials at the city and the Port Authority should do everything reasonably possible to get this deal done sooner rather than later and help jumpstart what promises to be a transformative project for downtown Cleveland.

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
And then this awesome news.... Yea more absorbtion by Clevelands new fortune 500 ! (also in Crains): Cliffs eyes more downtown space As shareholder scrutinizes $10B merger deal, ore supplier to add offices in former BP Tower By STAN BULLARD 4:30 am, July 21, 2008 Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. may be preparing to drop Cleveland from its name, but the fast-growing mine operator and iron ore pellet-maker is planning a bigger city presence with larger offices and a new Public Square address. Although Cliffs declined comment, three sources familiar with the situation said the company is preparing to take two floors — a total of 60,000 square feet — of office space at 200 Public Square, formerly BP Tower. The sources said the steel industry supplier plans to maintain existing offices at the 1100 Superior Building downtown, where it occupies in excess of 120,000 square feet on more than three floors. Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
In Crains this morning: Key Tower retains Squire Sanders By STAN BULLARD 4:30 am, July 21, 2008 Scratch Squire, Sanders & Dempsey LLP from the list of big tenants who might fuel downtown Cleveland’s new-building drive. David Goodman, Cleveland managing partner, said the law firm extended its eight-floor lease at Key Tower for 10 years and won expansion options. Mr. Goodman said he was glad to see plans for new downtown office buildings afoot and looked carefully because “it was not a foregone conclusion we would stay put.” He would not disclose terms.

All good points gilgi, and good observations about other cities fares (you were right on, regardless of MTS false statements). Oh and I think everyone else got your point fine.

Cleveland: Downtown: The Avenue District
In the PD today: DEVELOPMENT As the Avenue rises in Cleveland, the city's future looks up Saturday, July 19, 2008 Steven Litt Plain Dealer Architecture Critic Cleveland developer Nathan Zaremba is used to being asked what he's drinking these days. He's building the first phase of a $300 million housing development in downtown Cleveland in an economic slump, with credit tightening, inflation threatening and gas at $4 a gallon. But he was quite chipper during a recent tour of the partially completed portions of his Avenue development. Cleveland: Flats East Bank
All good things clvlndr I dont know that everyone would agree with this though. This extremely unique site deserves the right plan, and Cleveland would be stupid to not be somewhat choosy with this. (Many of us have seen cities (and Cleveland) do this type of thing wrong, which had a lifespan of 10 years) See Peabody's posts above.......

Cleveland: Downtown: The 9 / Rotunda / County Admin Development
I hope not. but it says "First, though, he said he needs $35 million in historic preservation tax credits from the state of Ohio and the federal government". Maybe its just an exageration though. I'll have to see what they are doing here in DC, I beleive they are trying to designate buildings from the same era here, including the Bruer designed HUD headquarters.

Cleveland: Downtown: The Avenue District
I think you both have good points. But maybe its just as well Zaremba/the developers that are rather conservative as well. I think Zaremba thinks it is something Cleveland hasnt seen, and although many cities have seen very similar style buildings built, (I know there a ton of similar ones build in DC the past few years) Cleveland hasnt so much. I think the loft buildings are rather attractive, but again certainly not groundbreaking. I too didnt really think the townhomes were that great a fit for where they were building them, but yet they seem to be selling the best. The excitement may be as well that these are going up, in an area that people might have assumed would be surface lots forever, and yet a good location, maybe not as prime, unique or exciting as the East Bank. So, I think people are going to be more "touchy" or critical about what they are going to do on the East Bank, in part due to what it was in addition to its prime and unique location.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
Thanks for beating MTS to that. I think the original plan was somewhat better in its scale, and maybe style. With the increase in scale and scope, it seems some of the buildings grew in ways that are not necessarily the best in my opinion. I would have rather seen some more density and more complete connections to what is already around there and less suburban office/lifestyle looking concepts. I will be waiting for more detailed renderings of course..... Still my hopes would be that Eaton would instead go with a visible public square or WHD spot (which I don't see happening). Also, the tower in the second phase bothers me in that it would block the view of the bridge (behind Spinnakers), that is so nice for viewing. Also agree on the brick (no photos or hard proof necessary), but unfortunately for it to be as sterile and "new" feeling as possible, I have a feeling that they will want to consistently use the new brick.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
According to the story in Crain's, they would have 2008 combined revenue of 6.5 billion and estimated 2009 revenue of 10 billion, which would indeed put them in the fortune 500 (currently the low end of the 500 is around 4.62 billion) http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20080716/FREE/959643602/1022/breaking "Upon completion of the deal, Cliffs Natural Resources would have estimated combined pro forma 2008 revenue of nearly $6.5 billion and EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) of $1.9 billion. The company’s estimated 2009 revenue would reach $10 billion with estimated EBITDA of $4.7 billion."

CLEVELAND - life on the Edge(water)
Ironically all 3 of these houses are the same family. With the big white one with the sculptures being the original, and then they built the other 2 on both sides for the daughter and son. Yeah, I painfully watched them build the one in the picture each time I came back, and just when I thought they couldnt do anything else to it, they did, and apparently feel "more is more". My cousin owns the house behind this, on Edgewater (the gray one that you got a picture of). Apparently they built quite the garage that towers over his backyard that he planted bamboo to hide (and which the city looked the other way, when people complained about the excessive height). He said its not too bad since it at least hides the house. My uncle owns the one across from my cousin' on Edgewater. Thats where I would spend parts of my summer's growing up. Ah the memories..

Downtown Cleveland - Holiday Inn Express and Holiday Inn Select
For the longest time I was always getting the Hyatt when I tried on Priceline, but then one time I got the Embassy Suites (before they redid the rooms) and I didnt stay there due to "the occasion" and some of the negative things I read on negative things I read on Tripadvisor, so then I either just used the Hyatt site (where I was getting $79), or used the govt rate at the Ritz...

They seem to be an extremely columnar variety. At first glance, they looked quit like columnar english oak by their form, which they use alot in Europe for allee's.

Cleveland: Public Square Night Shots - July 2, 2008
Great pics Redbrick. Next best thing to being there. I think the TT will have the capability with the new lighting system to change colors (Is it LED?).. for special events etc. pretty easily as opposed to the old way of having to switch out all the colors.
