  1. This makes me sad.. I am from here (actually Conneaut, right next to Ashtabula) My memories growing up here are nice. It wasnt long ago when it was a nice place with a lot of good jobs and neighborhoods, and the downtowns were still there, and yes Charlisles..... Now I will barely ever go back, because it is just too sad and depressing. Of course today, the sprawl of yesterday is even abondoned, in favor of the new Wallmarts.

Wow you people are really down on Hillary.... I thought Obama was certainly not as messiah like in a debate setting (which I think says a little (as they said not being in front of a teleprompter, is he a bit out of sorts) I thought McCain supporters were supposed to be voting for Hillary in the primary since she is less likely than Obama to beat McCain in an election?

It was almost as if they forgot where they were........ In that they were saying things like "NAFTA has done alot of damage to upstate NY, or Youngstown or even Toledo". Im thinking.... hmmm your in one of the best examples of a city that has lost factory jobs..... It's called Cleveland (Oh, and the mayor is Frank Jackson, not Johnson)
  4. Yeah in the new West Gate
  5. I didnt even think of this, but this is very true, we do this all the time in the Fed. Govt. You cant accept a variation of what the RFP was asking for, it makes for an unfair situation or creates an uneven playing field. This wouldnt be fair to the others who may have considered submitting proposals but may not have due to the language in the original RFP (rules that discluded them). Since nobody else bid on the original, they can rewrite the RFP catering to this "1" proposal, of course this would also open the door for others to submit similar proposals (which isnt neccesarily bad), unless they "wire" it for KandD (make so specific that only KandD would qualify or apply), but in a situation like this they would have to be careful, as you could see how this could result in (or at least look like) "favors", and I dont think the commissioners can afford to have any more controversy here. I just hope Hagan doesnt have any relatives at KandD, or outstanding political contributions that would draw any suspicion. You get the idea.
  6. True, and hopefully Ohio becomes a hot bed for alternative energy jobs in the future (if the Ohio leg. makes the right decisions) but again part of the allure is that it has the manufacturing infrastructure and former workers to make it work. In the meantime it would be stupid for Ohio not to try to snag companies currently looking for manufacturing facilities (for these very reasons)...
  7. From what Ive heard about this place and the randomness that people have experienced, this doesnt surprise me one bit... Although most reports are the food is really good, you cant always assume they are open, or that the chef is in at any given time. The biggest problem there is extremely slow service. It's like he's the only one in the kitchen and there's only one waitress, and English isn't her first language (for example, she didn't know what a vegetarian was). I took some people to lunch there and it took well over 2 hours before we were done at the restaurant. Ive heard that too.... So what did you think of the food? Worth the unpredictable nature of going there?
  8. If you continued on 24th down to the end (Kolarama) its the second from the corner on Kolarama. You should also add a burning bag of poo from the dog park if your going to do that!

  10. MTS, nice pics.. I wish I would have known you were in the hood, I was house sitting right in the neighborhood in the first part, and you had a picture of the dog park where I take my new pup. You were around lots of the DC power peoples homes. The one on the right in the one where the people are walking their dogs is Bob Bennett,s (I do their garden) right around the corner from that is Teddy Kennedy's and Rumsfeld etc... Cool area to walk around though.. Oh and the one that is "one of your favs" they just finished a huge renovation of in the fall.

It will be interesting to see if Obama responds, and if their is any substance to his response.
  12. I think you hit it on the head rockandroller. Cleveland has always (well as long as I remember) been a great food town, although I think it certainly has become more creative, and that you really have to know things as you said. I have talked to people that have been to Cleveland (mostly a few years ago) on business that just thought it was ok there, but certainly never knew where "to go". Cleveland is full of secret areas and off the beaten path gems, that you really have to know about. Of course in the last few years, "Tremont" has been put on the map, but it is still a relatively secluded place that somebody visiting likely wouldnt find or hear about. A perfect example is the Tremont Tap House (the one that Mayday dislikes so much and only goes because he feels sorry for it). It is even off the beaten path for Tremont (in not the most welcoming or obvious spot?). Of course people that I have introduced to Cleveland say this is what makes the city so special and unique, in that there are so many hidden gems, but also what could make the typical business traveler not realize the wealth of things there (if they are not willing to explore and venture....) Of course more recently Cleveland has been thrust into the food spotlight due to high profile things such as Lola, in a high profile area...., which hopefully has given everything else a bit more notice... I always tell people, in regard to Lola and the Rock Hall (the things that they associate Cleveland with), that those arent even necessarily the best things to see and do (eat) when visiting, and to check out some of the stuff that has been there (other great reastaurants and museums etc..) Funny too because usually when I bring an out of towner to one of the hidden gems, they almost always say "there is nothing like this in........" or "if this was in ....... it would be mobbed"
  13. Yes I think you do... since I'm guessing "those places" don't have much "cross clientele". I must say even I have only been to one of those .
  14. Thats right, it is across from the Gold Horse Saloon.
  15. WRATH ARCANE was started on January 3rd, 2006 when Cleveland boutique owner Brian O’neill (Im guessing Brigade) called Cleveland designer and long-time friend Sean Bilovecky. 16. FYI they are "for sale" and will be priced at $425,000 with tax abatement and low condo fees. They each take up the entire floor.
  17. Apparently beer is relevent though.
  18. Going back to 2527, I just saw this email from them from September, so they didnt close that long ago. I was equally a little confused about the article in scene about the "empty for 3 decades" etc. Apparently it was talking about before 2527 went in, and I guess the Velvet Tango Room people were part owners or investors in 2527. Im surprised more of you hadnt been there, it was a nice little hang out and I was sad to see it close , although it was in a slightly off the beaten path location. Thursday September 20th is the annual SILPADA jewelry show. They will be featuring affordable accessories from the new catalogue. Thursday will also be the last day for 2527. Come on in after work and join us for all night happy hour and hors d'ouevres. 5pm All of us would like to thank you for your support over the years. We would like to extend a special thank you to Edward Anderson, the leader of our house band, for his talent and dedication to 2527. Peace. Maribeth and Tom
  19. ^ Im with you... Except what if they dont build it with brick's? :|
  20. No it doesnt.. They would be moving from the May Co. building, which is not "class A" Actually read the article and see the "office vacancy" thread. :?
  21. And the understanding being that the new configuration would better open up access and views to the river..? Its certainly a trade off..
  22. I thought that seemed a bit of a stretch (in the story, especially in the title). What would that really have to do with them locating a call center here? And you'd think thats what the Cleveland department of economic development or Cleveland econonomic development orgs. would already be doing (selling locating in the city), but I guess they have been know to let opportunies slip away.
  23. Some news about Stone Mad, maybe St Patrick's Day! From Scene: Stone Mad (1306 West 65th Street), a paean to painstaking craftsmanship in the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood. With extensive renovations happening on both vintage properties, the projects have evolved into long, slow labors of love. If recent sneak peeks are any measure, the waits have been worth it. Regarding Stone Mad, partners Pete Leneghan and Eileen Sammon's stunning pub, patio, and Irish-music venue, it's tough to know where to begin. The intricate ironwork? The exacting masonry? The handblown glass? There's not an inch of space or a piece of hardware in the three-year-old project that isn't a work of art. Expect artful offerings from the kitchen too, under the direction of longtime executive chef Mike Fadel. Fadel says the 60-seat dining room will be home to a "meat-and-potatoes" menu of 12-ounce, hand-formed burgers; a fresh-daily fish; brisket; steak; and rotisserie turkey, carved to order in the open kitchen. In summer, freshly baked pizzas will emerge from the patio's charcoal-fired oven. Nothing on the menu is deep-fried, and nothing will top the $20 mark. Expect Stone Mad to open in time for St. Paddy's Day.
  24. Some news about Stone Mad as well as Brothers Lounge. Things are shaping up! From Scene:More Bars in More Places By Elaine T. Cicora Published: January 30, 2008 Get ready to dive into two of Cleveland's most eagerly awaited watering holes: Stone Mad (1306 West 65th Street), a paean to painstaking craftsmanship in the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood, and Brothers Lounge (11609 Detroit Avenue, 216-470-1681), the no-expense-spared tavern and music hall near Detroit and West 117th. With extensive renovations happening on both vintage properties, the projects have evolved into long, slow labors of love. More at clevescene.com
