  1. Clearly it should be and clearly this list is screwy. (I really thought that crime was much worse here than Cleve.) Since everyone I know here has been held up at gun point (many several times/most in "good" neighborhoods, and one I know killed when he didnt "move" quick enough). I guess one thing DC may have going for it is that with the massive gentification, alot of crime has moved into PG county (across the border in Maryland)
  2. Since there was all the talk of mediocrity, and even disappointment in Zocalo on E. 4th., this restaurant review in The Free Times is interesting. Apparently they were not impressed with their first 2 visits either, and it looks like from this article that they may have gotten it together.. Anybody have similar experiences/impressions? Dining Lead Quick Recovery The Dramatically Improved Zocalo Is Worth Another Look By Douglas Trattner FLAT IRON STEAK - Sliced thin and served tender.. In the restaurant world, the only thing harder than meeting inflated expectations is reversing previously held negative ones. It's easier to satisfy a first-time diner than one who had an unpleasant initial experience; the pleasure curve is shorter and more direct. That was the position in which we found ourselves after a less-than-stellar encounter shortly after Zocalo's opening left us dreading a second visit. Such is the burden of a restaurant critic: You are compelled by duty to return to the scene of the crime and throw good money after bad. Of course, there's a reason we go back a second and, in this case, third time: Unlike milk and mattresses, restaurants typically improve with age. More at http://www.freetimes.com
  3. "The property owner has put together 250,000 square feet of office space......" "Most of the space is on five floors in the lower part of the skyscraper in downtown Cleveland. ....the company wanted to put together enough office space to woo some of the tenants that are looking for new downtown offices. One big name — the Baker Hostetler law firm — is not on the tower’s prospect list. Mr. Boehmcke said the building’s bid for the firm disappeared after a tenant decided to keep space on the skyscraper’s upper floors that Baker would have needed." Can anybody clarify this.... According to previous reports BH currently occupies 165,000 sq. ft.. Certainly BP had enough to accomodate them. Is the 250,000 sq. ft. not consecutive..? It says Baker would have needed the upper floors.. (why is this, if there are 250,000 sq. ft vacant?) Maybe its more, they wanted the upper floors?
  4. Then there was U.S. Merchandise (which was Cleveland based) as well as Best and also Dahlkempers (may have only been in Western PA)
  5. No, because they opened one in Independence before they closed the one downtown. Not sure if that is still there though. I just found that they had a (employees withholding) tax lein against them at the end of 2006.
  6. Straphanger, I think Htsguy may have been talking about post 230 as opposed to post 231 (all I can figure).
  7. Actually if you havent been around in a while, you could compare it to many more places here. Ill try to post a pic near where I live, Columbia Heights (the newest example). It could be "The Avenue District"
  8. And I think all of us that take such an interest are so anxious to see something happen that we are easily dis-illusioned as to when and if things will actually happen (until we actually see it). So it does seem like it takes an eternity. We have seen alot of plans and ideas come and go. Im sure this is typical in any city similar to Cleveland (hungry to see things happen) . Here in DC for example, there are things popping up everywhere that I never seem to even hear much about. Then again I dont really follow the things here like I do in Cleveland, so it doesnt mean they dont encounter the same kind of "delays", although I think the ecomony in an area will certainly help determine what and how much comes to fruition.. Since, in places like DC that have experienced housing and office shortages, your naturally going to see more happen (even just building on spec), as opposed to somewhere like Cleveland that is hurting (economy, housing market etc...). (Sorry, I hate comparing things to D.C., since it is not a typical place)
  9. and in the PD today: New Tower City ban on unaccompanied teens gets good early reviews Tuesday, November 06, 2007 Michael Sangiacomo Plain Dealer Reporter A policy of tossing unaccompanied teens during afternoon shopping hours paid off quickly for Tower City Center. Security officers began enforcing the policy Thursday, and within days merchants reported fewer problems and better sales, said Lisa Kreiger, general manager of retail for the downtown mall. "We had a very encouraging weekend," Kreiger said Monday. "Our traffic was more families, more shoppers. Most of the stores reported good sales, better than last year. I think this is the right thing for Tower City." More at cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com
  10. hopfully the press around the destruction coupled with the recent transactions ofr some of the downtown properties, will allow a number of developers from outside of Ohio to get in on the bidding. i'd hate to see any of the other projects that are underway or in planning stages (stonebridge, 668) get sacrificed or delayed b/c this project took all of the financing from local players. I was hoping the same thing. That there would possibly be more interest in this from outside groups, because of the exposure. It seems like it would be a bit much for K@D to take on. If not, and down the road, if the county were to continue to pursue their plans, I could see Hagan and Dimora saying, "hey we gave the opportunity for someone to do something with the building, but nobody was interested...." kind of thing, and that they are doing the best thing by ridding Cleveland of this..........
  11. someone on the cleveland.com forums posted that it was closed. not sure why. apparently the owner is listing it for rent on craigslist: http://cleveland.craigslist.org/off/466666733.html Seems the curse continues..! :? I'll see if I can find out whats going on since my relatives own that building.. Yes the Velocity Grill is the latest casualty of the Wilsher building. It was very sudden. The owners of the buildning basically didnt even know until it happened last Wednesday night. They gave no warning, but apparently after the outdoor patio season closed, business really tapered off. Too bad...
  12. As are many others.. What were they thinking! I think there are some fine buildings underneath all the ridiculous "alterations" they did. The court house and library are beautiful though...

From the PD. It was one Perkowski was working on. Fire destroys warehouse being converted into lofts Thursday, November 01, 2007 Jesse Tinsley A swift fire destroyed a two-story warehouse-style building being converted into lofts and damaged a machine shop next door Wednesday afternoon on Cleveland's East Side. Cleveland Fire Department officials have not determined the cause of the blaze that erupted around 3 p.m. in the vacant building on East 45th Street, just north of Superior Avenue... http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2007/10/fire_east_of_downtown.html
  15. Dont forget the Bernie Kosar restaurant. I guess that would be semi-local (flavor), even though there is one in Miami.
  16. Waiting for w28th to chime in on this. Im trying to be open about it and havent come to a conclusion. Oh and about the old Euclid sign... I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised with what they are going to do.
  17. A big, tall, expensive messPosted by The editors October 23, 2007 05:47AM After owning the old Ameritrust complex at Euclid Avenue and East Ninth Street for more than two years, and doing almost nothing with it but racking up bills, Cuyahoga County Commissioners want to sell. This, after paying too much -- $22 million -- for the historic rotunda, three adjacent buildings, a parking garage and a 22-story tower so riddled with asbestos that some estimates put the cost of abatement at equal to half the purchase price...

Its about the various night clubs that Musky worked in........ I mean..... The first post will answer that.
  19. Lakewood riverfront project allowed to proceed Tuesday, October 16, 2007 Molly Kavanaugh Plain Dealer Reporter Lakewood- An upscale riverfront development announced more than a year ago has the green light to proceed. The Cliffs on Rocky River needed land and money for an access road, and both issues have now been resolved. The city will provide $250,000, the county is donating 0.4 of an acre and Cleveland Metroparks signed a memo of understanding agreeing to grant an easement... more at http://www.cleveland.com
  20. Im confused if this is good or bad. I would think that it would be more important for them to fill up the Fed. building than to occupy a building on an island on the FEB. Maybe another case of this being an ingredient to make the FEB project feasable/doable for Wolstein..?
  21. Gee I cant seem to see it from here.... picture???
  22. My mistake, but my clutter argument stands.
  23. Your example of Columbus would come in here. Columbus' relatively tall buildings are not really even that tall as far as a skyscraper goes (I dont believe any really exceeding 28 stories). But the lack of other buildings around them, or visual clutter, gives them a much taller appearance and prominence in the skyline. Look at similar buildings in Cleveland, such as the 5/3 building. It barely even shows up in the skyline (of course dependant on where you are) as is the case with most buildings on e. 9th, looking from the west. Of course 10-20 story buildings in the warehouse district would show up well from the west but not from the east. If those were built in Columbus, they would most certainly show up from every angle. Not much blocking their view.
  24. From the comments after, it looks like other people are pointing out how flawed she is.. I think she'll be sorry she didnt put more thought into this.
