Yeah I think Trifecta has done a nice job with things, along with the fact that these concepts basically originated in Cleveland. The only thing that I wouldnt want to see is these places located in every city, which ultimately they do want to do (well maybe not every city). What makes Cleveland and E. 4th so unique is that there are so many "one of a kind, great concepts, that when I bring out of towners in, they always say "Ive never seen anything like this" or "DC has nothing like this" etc... I always look forward to the progress that has been made for each visit home that I make, and Im certainly as impatient as anybody to see these things finished........... :roll:

Plans for a new campus center at Case from the CWU paper The Observer, March 9, 2007 Volume XXXIX, Issue 20 Campus center plans underway Alison Dietz, News Editor After 15 years of promises of a new student center, the administration is finally sitting down to make it happen. A new $40 million campus center is currently in the planning stages, with groundbreaking expected to occur in fall of 2008 and completion expected by spring of 2011. "We're putting ideas together, and we should be ready for architect selection by the end of this semester," said Myles Nickolich, VP of Student Affairs for USG and a member of the Campus Center Planning Team. The building will be located somewhere in the vicinity of KSL and Thwing, likely in the area that contains the sidewalks from both Mather Quad and the Turning Point statue. "It will be right in the way of the path to class," said Nickolich. "The idea is that students will have to walk through it." "We hope that students will want to walk through it," said Don Kamalsky, an associate vice president of Student Affairs. The location of the building at the exact center of campus will have a symbolic meaning for Case. "We're placing it at a crossroads to show that it belongs to everyone," said Margaret Carney, University Architect and Planner. "It isn't just for the engineers or the liberal arts students." Nickolich's commitee recently traveled to visit the student centers of the University of Akron and Kent State University, and has plans to visit colleges in Virginia in the coming weeks. The committee is looking to balance a trendy student center like Akron's with a wealth of technology. "We're going all out with this," said Nickolich. "We want it to be the pinnacle of technology." The new building is being called a campus center rather than a student center to reflect its place in the University Circle community. It will later not only to students, but faculty, staff, and visiting scholars as well as University Circle residents. "Part of why students are attracted to Case is its affiliation with University Hospitals, CIM, CIA, and other cultural institutions," said Sue Nickel-Schindewolf, an associate vice president for Student Affairs. "Here students are more likely to run into people who are not their professors."The campus center will take up about 75,000 square feet and be about the size of two floors of KSL. The committee hopes to incorporate campus offices like the Career Center, bursar's office, and registrar's office into the plan as well as provide classrooms, meeting areas, and an auditorium to be larger than any in the University Circle area. "We're putting in everything short of a holodeck," said Nickolich. Flexibility will be a large part of the campus center's layout; rooms that are classrooms during the day will be able to be used by student groups at night, and everything will be easy to renovate. "Ten years down the line, we won't be stuck with the original plan," said Nickolich. A big challenge faced by the committee is to build a great campus center without encroaching on the burgeoning Arts and Retail District that is being built right down the street. The Arts and Retail District will include the relocated Museum of Contemporary Art as well as an abundance of retail stores, food, and places to live. The university bookstore will also be located here at the corner of Ford and Euclid in the form of a two-story Barnes and Noble. "We're trying to bring the flair of Coventry to a college town area here," said Nickolich. To that end, the new campus center will not impinge upon the Arts and Retail District's business, but will include such things as a Case Club-like restaurant where students can have lunch with faculty or administrators or just go on a nice date, according to Nickolich. The campus center will not just be a standalone building, according to Carney. "It will be a group of three buildings and outdoor spaces. It will engage with the library and Thwing to be a center for the whole campus," he said.

j73, as much as I would hope that is the case with Bank of America and Key, I read something a couple months ago indicating otherwise, and that an acquisition of Key would still keep BofA under that threshold. I will search for the article and post.

The Pittsburgh story from the link above forgot to mention that the "Bodies exhibit" was already in Cleveland. I always heard that The CMA had the second largest endowment in the U.S. The linked article above, stating $600 million was from 2003 after the endowment lost a lot of its value, but now it is supposed to be back up to the mid or upper $800 million range. I believe was traditionally close to 1 billion.

Yes I thought the same thing. Great detail and brickwork, but looks long neglected. I wasnt sure where it was and wondered if it would be in a good area for redevelopment as housing or studio space, so I looked up on mapquest and it puts it between St. Clair and Superior at E. 53rd Street, which should be ideal. Maybe it is too far gone? What a shame..

Does anybody know what the buildings on Lorain are like? Yes, the architect guy that bought them, did so for the whole purpose of preserving the brick structure (fear it would some day be torn down). Are the other buildings just junky? Can they justify tearing them down? Do they also face Lorain?

Trip Recommendations for Washington, DC
Yes, I live in an old building on Kolarama, so not actually in one of the beautiful townhomes but a beautiful building. Ive been lucky most of my time here, seems everyone around me has been involved in some kind of robbery/holdup. My good friend (that wants to move to Cleveland) was held up 4 times in 4 years (by gun and knife) and had several bicicles stolen. So I'm not sure that I would go with what Dan said about the area being safer than most cities (the holdups don't necessarily make the news since there are so many murders.) But, in addition, another benefit to the Windsor Park location is that on that side of Connecticut, with the embassies and bigwigs, there are lots of secret service police, which do make it safer. The criminals have moved into the nicer areas, but one block sometimes can make a difference.

Trip Recommendations for Washington, DC
I live about a block from the Windsor Park. It is a great location, especially if the weather is good and you like to walk around. The neighborhoods and architecture around there are great as are spring gardens etc.. Just steps away are many embassy houses, as well as the homes of people like Rumsfeld, Teddy Kennedy etc... Its a great area to walk in (I house sit a 3.5 million dollar house 2 houses over from Rumsfled, the house is just OK... would be a $650,000 house in Cleveland). Keep in mind that D.C. can be pretty dangerous at night, even in the "good" areas. While that hotel is in a good area, the further toward 18th, the more you need to watch (at night). I walk around all the time, and don't generally feel it is unsafe, but have recently been held up at gunpoint, as has most of my neighbors both in Mt. Pleasant and Kolarama. Last summer there were a rash of robberies on the National Mall of unsuspecting tourists as well as a rash of other senseless crimes that led to a crime emergency. :shoot: Oh, and you will experience many panhandlers, that will try to engage you... ignore and keep walking! There was some good advice about restaurants above. Traditionally DC doesn't have the best restaurant scene, I generally have had a hard time finding a place that wasn't a dump, terrible service, or dirty or just bad food, yes there are good things like authentic Ethiopian or probably Guatemalan, and it was traditionally recommended that you eat at a chain because they had higher standards believe it or not! But things have been evolving a bit, as Washington has become a bit more of a real city. I have seen some creative talent enter the scene and agree with some of the above recommendations.

Dan, I believe this was directed at your "I don't know that I would consider Tower City as "good urban design". ^^same suburban shopping mall concept? What about the two attached hotels and thousands of office workers that don't even have to go outside to shop there. Would like to hear your reasoning here...

Why doesn't downtown Cleveland have....
I think in part places like Malleys represent that hometown support and pride thing. It may not be the best, but it is one of those things that I get for people at the holidays and bring back to DC from Cleveland as gifts, born and bred in Cleve. (that and Great Lakes brew, stadium mustard, petersons nuts, etc.) Also, here in D.C. you dont really find those kind of homegrown businesses. Your options are typically Godiva etc. so it is a novelty for people that I have brought to Cleveland to see these type of local establishments, as it is for me now that I dont live there.

Well this all just shows how progressive this developement really may be. The relaxed driving and parking rules, the new tree variety that gives color and shade while not blocking visibility, and I believe the woman pushing the stroller with the big behind and yellow hair has a black baby. Its all very untimate!

Nice pics. Mayday. I got out of Cleveland, just in time and back to D.C., although we had a couple inches of sleet and ice last night, which even closed the airports. Yes, Scott Radke did a number of murals in Tremont (also the building facing the patio of the Southside) I have a sculpture/doll by him.

It says "the developer also owns land on the southern side of St. Clair. Plans for the south side of St. Clair are undetermined." Undetermined? I thought this was already to be a "unifying" next phase, even before considering the One Cleveland Center corner.

Thanks Mayday. It was a lovely NYC trip without leaving the warmth and comfort of my living room. I love when the flight comes into Cleve. that way, and trying to recognize everything.
