Cleveland: Retail News
Soma remodeling/reopening November at Legacy, and Z Gallerie under construction for Nov opening, though Picciones' jewelers now gone. Evereve (was "Hot Mama") opened in old Aeropostale spot at Beachwood last week, with thelong-awaited high profile Zara clothing store rumored to be opening, in a very big 2-story interior/exterior space, around 1st half November, the first if its kind from east coast to Chicago. A pretty big get for Beachwood. As no other exterior expansion, beyond Zara's Saks-adjacent location , will be started this year at BP, the mall is blocking off future construction areas with fencing and paving to allow parking this Fall, with construction to resume in 2017. So is that the extent of what they have been building on the exterior of the Mall? I just assumed it was something more.....

Wasn't always that way.

The Euclid Creek Reservation was a nice surprise once I discovered it after moving back. It makes a picturesque cut through from the Hts. Taking cool Belvoir road and cutting over to the southern terminus of the Euclid Creek Parkway is a neat drive.

Indeed, if a demolition permit is denied this is exactly what they will do.

Where I live (Wash DC) I'd put you at the Four Seasons - cheapest room $831 a night. But in Cleveland, the Ritz is an awesome bargain - well worth what they charge. Yes indeed! And its one of the few that are dog friendly. Plus their government rate makes it as cheap as the Holiday Inn.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Not at the Clinic where they are only announcing it now without saying where it happened (since it is on all the news channels first). People shouldn't be parking anywhere south of Cedar or even Carnegie or north of Chester for that matter. At least not unless the Clinic is going to provide security. The Clinic doesn't want to spend money fixing cameras or providing security as that could effect their record profits.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
The numbers in the article don't bear your analysis out. From the article: "While Cleveland's population in poverty shrunk by 17,616 in 2015, the number of suburban residents in poverty increased by 2,163. " That means that there was an absolute drop in impoverished population within the region of approximately 15,500 people. If all we had was a shift in population living below the poverty line from Cleveland to the suburbs than those numbers would close to balance out. It's certainly possible that we're just seeing the region bleeding low income residents to the rest of the nation, or its possible that we're seeing large numbers of low income residents move out of poverty. But the numbers don't really tell us which. I noticed that too. Initially I would have thought the same as Sherman as especially these east side suburbs have continued to decline a great deal, and people of greatest means have moved on, but your right, the numbers don't support that to the extent that it is being seen. That's not to say that the general trend of higher incomes continuing to move out to be replaced by lower incomes isn't happening to a greater extent.

Oh ok. I was just reading the planning minutes from earlier in the summer where Doody was seeking approval for CT. Things certainly keep changing at all of these sites.

Wait, so which space would be Coastal Taco then?

You called the Container store at Laplace ehf. I saw the new build over the weekend and thought it had to be a container store given the shape and size. Yes the awnings do look like Corner Bakery which I think I recall they were trying to enter this market. In DC they were nice to have as they didn't have many "real" bakery's there. But even here they will be an ok option to have.

I'm across from there and they have cleared the site. I did have a plan I will see if I can dig up.

Cleveland: Downtown: Tower City / Riverview Development
If the Terminal Tower is going to be residential, it shouldn't be anything but high end. It will just be interesting to see if K&D can do high end while cutting their usual corners.

Certainly a new building at Beachwood place would bring in more of the demographic that they are seeking, as it seems to have faded from the UH location. So yeah if they wanted to keep one location on the east side that didn't include Mentor, this would be the thing to do, yet I don't see it happening. Speaking of Pinecrest, did construction ever resume? If not I'm seriously wondering if it will happen.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
None of these stores would likely even entertain being in the Galleria or The Avenue. That's just not a realistic expectation. It's one thing to say that it should be designed better to fit on the lake front. That's fair. But if you're rejecting this out of hand, you're basically saying you don't want retail and economic activity from this in the city limits. It ain't gonna happen at the Galleria or The Avenue. It's just not. I vote to make it better but I want the economic activity here. I want the taxes here. I want the jobs here. I don't want this going to the suburbs. Yes “Developer in Training” I would have thought that would have been obvious to all to everyone on here, and at least a few at the city level (accept for the usual clueless officials that should know better). But I forget that not everybody here is an urban planner, and doesn’t necessarily realize the ramifications of such bad decisions, even after years of examples which are addressed at great length on these very pages. I give inlovewithCLE a pass as I know he is passionate about the city. I just don’t agree that the concept as planned should have any future, even a better designed structure. I would be all ears if it was proposed as part of a larger concept/development as many have shown examples of, but we shouldn't be accepting a “anything is better than nothing” approach. The city really should play a leading role in fostering and guiding development when it comes to prime spots and interested parties. I just don’t think, under the current administration that they have that capability or vision.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
Ugh. Haven't heard that as I like Flip side better than B-Spot. That's the problem with these type developments. Its always so difficult and risky for the initial round of merchants as critical mass just isn't there to support them at such a high rent location.

Cleveland: Retail News
I keep thinking that, but the University Heights store is certainly an underperformer and never busy. Of course it is very poorly run and almost always a mess...... Frankly I was surprised when the UH one made it through the last round. But I agree, with the closing of Richmond in the last round, that doesn't leave many others for the east side service area and would think UH would need to remain. I haven't noticed if the University Hts one has been any busier since the Richmond closing.

Except there is already a jail there (on Harvard). Nice try though.

Cleveland: Downtown & Vicinity Residences Discussion
No surprise as my continued criticisms of anything K&D has indicated. Which is what makes it so sad that they will have the keys to the Terminal Tower. It deserves so much better.

I think this has been closed for a while (and not actually open for very long). I'm sure it had nothing to do with the owners.. relationship.... with the landlord going sour.

Here the Cleveland.com version: IBM eyes new office building on Cleveland Clinic land, to house Explorys subsidiary CLEVELAND, Ohio – IBM Corp. could have moved a fast-growing health care data analytics company and 170 jobs out of Cleveland. Instead, the tech giant is looking to establish a long-term presence here. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2016/08/ibm_eyes_new_office_building_o.html#incart_river_home

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
Here is a good example of when growth happens faster when a local company is acquired. Good news! Cleveland headquarters plan in works for IBM-owned data analytics unit Explorys, the IBM-owned health data analytics firm based in Cleveland, may not stay perched atop the 1111 Superior Building for long, at least if a plan to install it in a new building on a Cleveland Clinic-owned site at East 105th Street and Cedar Avenue comes to fruition. “We’re bullish on this. It’s exciting,” Nichols said, “This company has 170 jobs. It’s fast-growing and expects to add 125 new jobs by the end of 2018.” http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20160805/NEWS/160809886/cleveland-headquarters-plan-in-works-for-ibm-owned-data-analytics Employment numbers seem a little confusing since a February article indicates they employed about 220, with plans to add at least 80 more in 2016. Could be those are not all in Cleveland (even though it makes it sound like it), and the above refers to Cleveland.

Cleveland: North Coast Transportation Center
I'd support this over the proposed bridge. The concept was originally part of the mall proposal for the convention center, and the renderings looked amazing. This thread is another example of the failure of the Lakefront Plan; it really did nothing to bring together major stakeholders. Without that it's nearly impossible to get traction in any cohesive, meaningful way. The NCTC should have been built by now. Its really insane to consider anything but the land connection previously proposed and championed by many of us. Many other cities were able to fund similar projects (and get most of it paid for by the Feds.)...
