Its crazy that Cleveland didn't try to do the same thing with the mall and the Shoreway. 80% covered by Federal funds..

Wow, but also not surprised. I'm sure Schimoler made back his $2,000 he spent destroying the space/furnishing with particle board. He certainly isn't good at controlling quality beyond 1 establishment.

Shaker Heights: Van Aken District Transit Oriented Development
I like the idea of a gym there. Too close for another Heinen's....

Shaker Heights: Van Aken District Transit Oriented Development
Yes this is a pretty big disappointment. Literally Monday night they were negotiating with the City on site plans and had applied for a liquor license. They even reiterated their commitment to the project, then at 2:00 yesterday they closed to the public for a store wide meeting. The city was totally blindsided. While I was happy that Kroger didn't buy them, I had a bad feeling about the private equity firm buying them since it wasn't a high volume store by any means. They are open for the rest of the week for a closing sale.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
Me too. And yes it would be taking up rather prime land (for something that doesn't require such a location (and as someone said the Muni lot would be a better location)). It even towers over the USS COD submarine...

What a crappy location for such a monstrosity. Prime lakefront land for this, really?

Cleveland: Shaker Square: Development and News
Its just a stretch of a particularly ugly variety of hawthorn that is dying on the Green Line. The more common one that is used along there is mostly fine (except for a few newer one that have not received enough care. The bigger ones dying from the top down everywhere tend to be the pin oaks which have a sort of blight attacking them. Shaker has been actively diversifying their trees (as they had been hit hard, first as the origination point of dutch elm disease and most recently by the emerald ash borer (the other tree that is dying everywhere most evident in woodland settings), to the detriment of the future tree canopy as they are selecting varieties that tend to be dwarf or columnar (this even includes a dwarf version of a pear), which ruins the continuity of the large tree canopy that I love so much there.

I could see a Noodlecat in the food hall. Sawyers place at Van Aken is supposed to be a new concept, but since he has control over the food options its totally possible he could do a Noodlecat as well. Sawyer also mentioned a dearth of bagel places on the east side, which makes me wonder if he will coax Jeremy Umansky (used to work for Sawyer at Trentina) into opening his Jewish deli at Van Aken. This would be the "Schmaltz Delicatessen and Bakery" that Umansky announced he would be opening somewhere in the Hts area.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Yes those are the hawthorns SC is talking about. There has been quite a drought in Shaker, but most of those hawthorns are fine. There is a certain stretch a ways down Shaker that has died. It is a different variety that the others. Many of the oaks between SS and Coventry have also indeed died or are in decline. There is something hitting the pin oaks which is causing many to be in decline just about everywhere (even many of the new ones on Euclid in University Circle. We lost some huge ones in front of Moreland Courts.

Cleveland: Downtown: The Beacon
Agree. That's actually what I liked about the garage in that it added a needed transparency to an otherwise "heavy" stretch. Would have certainly make this look less clunky.

This was posted on Cleve.com and I posted in the Van Aken thread, but will post here as well. More on Jonathan Sawyer's involvement at Van Aken: Jonathon Sawyer will curate Van Aken District's food menu, open Shaker Heights eatery Jonathon Sawyer, a local chef who has won national accolades, will help craft the food and beverage lineup across the project, which could include a handful of sit-down restaurants and a food hall housing 15 to 20 stalls. Sawyer also plans to open a restaurant – his fourth, and his first outside the city of Cleveland – at the mixed-use development.................. The 22,000-square-foot food hall, which both Sawyer and Palmisano compared to Union Market in Washington, D.C., might hold a few stores and two restaurants, in addition to stalls. In October, Detroit-based watchmaker Shinola announced that it will open a store there. Other tenants include Rising Star Coffee and Luna bakery. RMS has mentioned only a few additional retailers, including Mitchell's Ice Cream and Chipotle, which will share a small building near The Fresh Market with dry cleaner D.O. Sommers. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2016/07/jonathon_sawyer_will_curate_va.html#incart_river_home Read more: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,17886.455.html#ixzz4E6mNPObO

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
Cross posted in the Van Aken thread: Over the weekend I received the summer issue of Shaker Life magazine which gives several updates on the Van Aken District. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Jonathan Sawyer will opening a restaurant in the development as well as handling all future food related leasing in the new renamed food hall (now named after one of the Van Sweringen brothers). There were a few additional details, but I don’t have the magazine handy at the moment. Oddly I have seen no mention of this anywhere else…..

The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
PLEASE DO! Like any "hip" city, there are great genuine people of Portland, New Orleans, etc, but then the people who move to a city with the express purpose of becoming cool by association. Portland seems to be overrun with those people, and I hope they stay away from the Land Would you say Austin and Nashville fall into those categories as well?

Been hearing that it is picking up finally. I just got tickets this morning for the July 8 game.... Good to see that there wasn't much available. Granted it is a Friday night game, playing the Yankees, and $ dog as well as fireworks.

I thought that was the purpose of the Opportunity Corridor? Or before that, Emerald Parkway off Grayton by the airport? Or before that, Hinckley Industrial Parkway next to the Jennings Freeway? Or before that, Industrial Parkway off Puritas/West 150th? Was thinking the same thing................

The hospital's have offices out in the burbs. Thinking the Clinic at the old MBNA HQ plus the old TRW HQ and UH at the old Office Max HQ. Maybe Lubrizol as well?? That ship has sailed.

Ugh. I was still expecting to see Eaton Corp. listed as Cleveland's largest company. But then remembered the move of the "headquarters" to Ireland to save on taxes.

Cleveland: Retail News
Yeah I heard about them. I talked to the owner of Mitchells a bunch to see what it would take. I'm not really sure that I even understand the Kickstarter campaign as this is really about dedicating your days to long hours and little pay, a total dedication to the business as there have been others that had the funds, but didn't understand the dedication part. Either they either have what it takes or they don't. Mr. Mitchell is willing to stay on to guide them through.
