Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Yes they moved to the Mill Creek neighborhood a couple of years ago. It was mostly a "putting there money where there mouth is" kind of thing... I know Connie was getting a lot of flack for preaching this and that while living in Bay Village/Avon (even on this board).

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
Actually it may be. I know it was unofficially mentioned here, but I thought it was confirmed some where. I could be wrong though.

I believe the Toby Keith's building is going to be the location of Margaritaville

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
Let me know how I can help! I'm actually President of the Cedar Taylor Development Association and I have one small commercial building in that neighborhood. If the price is right, I'd look to invest in more. All that said, while I admit we lag behind Lakewood, we do have some great restaurants - Tommy's, Anatolia, Nighttown, Black Box Fix, Melt, Anatolia, Marotta's , Little Italy, etc. And if you haven't checked it out yet - check out my favorite CH business - The Wine Spot. Not a restaurant, but you can bring food in and some Lee Road businesses will deliver there. I second The Wine Spot... Marotta's is great (best pizza over here), and Tav-co and Brennan's ok (comparable to some of the old, semi-dumpy pubs on Detroit with pretty good food), the barbeque place and Lopez usually good options. "Taste" is a nice surprise with great food which many people don't even think of. Stone oven and On the Rise, awesome pastry.... I would really love for a Deagan's to open on Lee! Alex at Quintana's is another neighborhood asset like Smith (in the Cedar/Taylor area) that is all about improving things. There are several reasons that CH isn't experiencing what Lakewood has been, but I'm holding out hope that things will stabilize and improve especially considering the tight market Lakewood has become and the increased popularity of University Circle. FYI, they really needed to fill in that empty spot on Lee with a new building when they had the chance..... Now the space serves as a huge disconnect in an otherwise usually vibrant district. Sometimes I have to remind myself that there are some good options on Larchmere and Shaker Square as well.

Cleveland: Cultural Gardens
That would be amazing. We had been advocating for that for years (A certain organization even offered the city finds to do such a thing a few years ago, but they were not interested). I will keep my fingers crossed that this is true and that they fix all the other lighting (bridges and such). Then work on replanting the many trees that have been lost over the years. The tree canopy has become amazingly barren through the park.

Cleveland: Streetscape Improvements
If there are fortunate enough to get replaced when they are out which doesn't seem to be very common here. The past few months I have come across this bridge I think that whole side has been out. I was really hoping they would pay more attention to such things with the RNC coming up, but worry since even Rockefeller Park still has much of its lighting not working and what is working, seems to be different colors.

Man what's going on. Car jacking's in Fairview Park, Robberies in Willoughby and Painesville...... Now the Chagrin Valley....

Cleveland: Retail News
One step at a time, but I have my doubts about this possibility. That land over there is questionable AND word is that Walmart is sitting on its lease and is refusing to give it up. However the city should be working hard to now follow through on their plans to extend Transportation Boulevard to Rockside Road. This isn't that spot. This is across 480 from there.

Cleveland: Downtown: Euclid & 9th Tower / Schofield Building Redevelopment
The Schofield Hotel officially opened today. They are offering $19.02 rates for March but I didn't find any. Otherwise about 40% off regular rates. If you travel and/or plan on staying here, be sure to sign up for their awards program. Lots of discounts and If nothing else they treat your dog like royalty based on information in their rewards system. Long-awaited Kimpton Hotel opens The years of waiting are over: The Kimpton Schofield Hotel opened Tuesday, March 8, in downtown Cleveland. The 122-room hotel is having a grand opening later in April but is offering a cute special for the month of March: a $19.02 stay while availability lasts. That figure is significant because the building the boutique hotel occupies was opened in 1902. The structure even boasts the date construction began -- 1901 http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20160308/BLOGS14/160309835/long-awaited-kimpton-hotel-opens-sonesta-suites-check-in

Y Yeah, I think they put it up last Wednesday or Thursday. Certainly exciting to see.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
Bingo! This city has such a plethora of performance space, yet it seems rare for most of them to serve any real purpose. With the Rock Hall site limitations this should be a real opportunity, in tandem with the pedestrian bridges, to utilize/incorporate some of these mall spaces, and even Public Hall. It really would serve downtown best to think this way as well as the pedestrian bridge would provide a natural link, with the mall areas not seeming so isolated as the Rock Hall.

Suburban Cleveland: Development and News
Yeah it closed sometime last year. What a loss. Nothing will likely happen to the Rockefeller building but it does need work as parts of it are not in the best of shape (the ceiling in the restaurant has many patches). But investment needs to be economically feasible, and as we have seen with many Church's, usually leads you down the road to demolition. The Rockefellers space has become an "event space" you can rent out, plus they hold special events (fish fry tonight, scotch pairings, Easter brunch). But I think that is what the Theatre space became as well.

Coming back to Cleveland - Detroit Shoreway, OC, Tremont - good for families?
Not sure what that would mean? Although that Shaker post goes into a bit about Lakewood/Shaker. BUT the West Side would be more mid west, Chicago like, the East Side, much more east coast.

Suburban Cleveland: Development and News
Yeah there was a ton of opposition. Its a tough situation as this area has been suffering. This is such a great, dense block of buildings which tearing down and building this would change the dynamics forever. But the current dynamics are also an empty un-utilized and deteriorating building. Also, sadly the wonderful Rockefeller building is largely vacant, as Rockefellers restaurant and the soup/sandwich place had also closed. There is only so much event/party space that an area can support. But something needs to pay for the upkeep of these buildings.......................

Living in Shaker Heights
Hey Believeland. So we moved from DC and bought in Shaker about 3 years ago. We thought we bought at a great time as the market seemed to be at its bottom, so we got an amazing house on a Lake for a fraction of what the previous owners paid. This is even considering the many improvements that the previous owner put in, and we have been gradually doing additional renovations. Coming from DC the houses are a bargain for such amazing houses, but the taxes are about 4-times what they were in DC, so our tax payments are actually more than our mortgage payment. Depending on what you are looking for would certainly determine what you can find for what kind of deal. Shaker is actually pretty transient for Cleveland. There are a ton of doctors and professors from the Universities and University Circle institutions. Since we have been here we have had several neighbors put their house on the market due to being lured away by competing institution’s (the neighbors next door have only been here a year, before getting an offer from U of Chicago they couldn’t refuse). So we have neighbors from all over….. retired fortune 500 execs, professors, doctors, authors etc… etc…. Many international, (one neighbor from Scotland and another from Sweden). Many other neighbors moved from neighboring communities such as Cleveland Heights or South Euclid and were looking for better neighborhoods and schools. But Shaker was built to move from neighborhood to neighborhood with the doubles, smaller housing types, mid-range and larger mansions, which still happens a great deal today as family’s grow and peoples earnings increase. There are many houses on the market in the mid ranges 450,000/ – 600,000 and up, and they tend to sit on the market for rather long periods as they are often bigger than people today want with many bedrooms. Also, many are former “fortune 500 executive” homes that Cleveland just doesn’t have as many of these days, so they really rely more on high earning doctors than ever before. Needless to say these homes tend to sit there for longer periods of time and decrease in price many times before they are finally sold. I guess the smaller homes in Onaway and Fernway tend to go faster as they are smaller and more affordable (there is a pretty wide range even there (can be 135,000-350,000) depending on how elaborate and updated they are. Bottom line is we love it here. I think after living in DC, Shaker was probably the only place we could consider in the Cleveland area. You just can’t beat the beauty, services, neighborhoods and people. The residents are very committed and dedicated to the community, schools and neighborhoods they live, which was a very important factor for me as DC totally lacked that. We do wish there were more quality places in and near Shaker to patronize and wish Cleveland Hts would make more of resurgence like Lakewood has so we can have such a selection of restaurants etc. It is true about the block parties and neighborhood parties. When we moved here, 2 separate neighbors had “house party’s’ to welcome us to the neighborhood. Shaker is so close to the City, U-Circle and the wonderful Chagrin Valley, and we have the parks system running near most neighborhoods, so people get to experience the natural world a great deal (we have deer, bald eagles, foxes, turkeys and coyotes that we see pretty regularly). I think real estate has only very marginally recovered on this side of town (likely we will not recover the money we are putting into our house, but we are ok with that). The city has been actively pursuing alternative revenue sources so hopefully at some point in the future there would be some small relief to the homeowners/residents. Feel free to PM me with additional questions or for additional info.

Yeah I was going to mention that. Its definitely tapering off. If we are to continue to have hope for this region, that number needs to go back up.

IKEA - Cleveland
That is such a weird spot to get to amongst that jumble of highway ramps etc. I go to that Lowe's quit a bit and even though there is good highway visibility, wondered when they decided to build CarMax about the weird access issues and figured likely only the locals would know how to get to these places easily.

Cleveland: Upper Chester: Development and News
Most were assuming that was why the sign came down and construction stopped in the space at Innova (as the Right-Aid space was new and freestanding with its own parking/and therefore preferred), but if its true Walgreens is still part of the Innova picture then at some point the Rite Aid spot will come into play.

Cleveland: Upper Chester: Development and News
Walgreens and Penn Station has been part of the plans for nearly a year along with signs in the windows indicating such. It has been discussed at great lengths here. Thus the added discussion of why things seemed to stop progressing and the signs removed.

The old Randall Mall site? Maybe it would help that decrepit area as opposed to bulldozing more green space.
