  1. Yes this was very nice lit up, and made quite an impact coming over the DS bridge, but has turned into a real night time dud the past few years that they haven't been lighting it. Since this bothered me quite a bit, I contacted the building manager about this a couple of years ago and they stated that they no longer light the building due to GSA energy conservation this and that, but said they still light it on special occasions of which I have not seen (and totally not true). Interesting they are able to light all the federal building 24/7 in DC though..... Letter writing campaign?
  2. Doesnt seem logical that these buildings would be restricted to low income.
  3. Here is an article about the Medical School by Steven Litt. I can’t tell if it is supposed to span the block between Euclid and Chester or not. It never appears long enough, yet the article seems to indicate it would (I would hope so). He mentions the CMA like similarities with the atrium. The pics that Dave posted from the Mt. Sinai site make it look especially blocky, but the model certainly doesn’t appear quite so. Cleveland Clinic and CWRU release most detailed plans yet for new Health Education Center, aiming to break ground in spring [email protected]://www.cleveland.com/architecture/index.ssf/2014/11/cleveland_clinic_and_cwru_rele.html#incart_river
  4. So Norman Foster (Lord Foster) came to speak at the Cleveland Clinic's Ideas for Tomorrow event this past Wednesday. While I was not able to attend, there was a model unveiled of the mysterious and apparently secret design of the new medical school building. The model now sits in the main CC entrance hall/Sydell and Arnold family pavilion. I took several pictures, and when I have a chance will try to upload them. No huge surprise. Will be very sleek and glassy, thin protruding roof, with some maybe late 60's-esque looking insets at the entrances. The interior appears to be a huge commons area with a vast center skylight spanning the extent of the building (on the model they have this open, which had many wondering if it was an architectural feature. It appears the interior is open and steps down to this center atrium which would keep with the clinic building model of allowing natural light to enter spaces. The side of the building opposite the Clinic "grand entrance mall" appears will be green space with likely another similar sized building facing this. This is way behind schedule, and they only very recently had the parking lots vacated on part of this property where construction would take place. So it appears things will be moving forward very soon. http://my.clevelandclinic.org/about-cleveland-clinic/events/ideas-for-tomorrow
  5. Ultimately you need to do what you can to keep housing values up. When values drop below a certain level it often only makes sense as rental housing, which is what has been happening to the east side in general. This has certainly opened the door to additional diversity, but also leads to decline. I think all of the things you mention come into play, but I do think that they need some contemporary and modern housing in areas like Cedar Lee (in the empty lots), to keep the district relevant and viable. I would not on the other hand advocate subsidizing the Turkey Ridge proposal, as that is not where I would worry about new housing, certainly not subsidizing its construction (yet there would be a demand there). But I really think Cedar Lee needs to be built upon and made to be a better connected district, more continuity and a more viable business environment.
  6. I mainly agree with you Cleve17. A number of years ago I never would have condoned such policies, but the realities have sunk in. It would certainly be a huge mistake to continually act as though everything is always random when there are real issues and real threats which will only lead to further destabilization. I'm hoping if nothing else that the events today will shake things up a bit and lead to a lower tolerance of such nonsense. And of course crime has gotten worse in the eastern suburbs. Heck there are robberies in Shaker Heights now. It just goes with the territory. Of all the years of statistical analysis I have had to do for my DC job I have never seen a situation where the type of demographic shifts that the east side suburbs have experienced hasn't also lead to higher instances of crime. Equally there is that danger when so much of your housing becomes rental and certainly with large amounts of section 8. Without a doubt it it de-stabilizes things. Where I disagree with you Cleve17 is on the tax abatement front. I think Cleveland Heights has to do everything in its power to bring new housing products to the market in areas such as Cedar Lee and Taylor etc.(its about maintaining a balance). They have to do everything they can to compete with what is happening in places like Lakewood as opposed to being left behind. Impressions are very important here as well, but it really is vital to hold onto mixed incomes, otherwise things will only continue to deteriorate and property values will only continue to go down.
  7. Congrats TPH2! I moved back from DC last year after about 15 years there... Amazing what you can afford here, and the people are like a million times nicer.
  8. That's the word, although I'm not sure why they wouldn't have wired the area for the lighting before the planting of all the perennials that they have now been digging up. Could be there were issues since they seem to keep digging up certain spots over and over again.
  9. Makes me hate G.Eagle even more.
  10. Eyehrtfood, they are now saying they don't expect more (or less than) 60% of the stores to relocate from other centers.... Wasn't it initially proposed as "it would take fro other centers? I don't know, I can just see several stores from Beachwood Place racing to relocate here to a place like this that seems less accessible. The shoplifting at Beachwood Place has gotten pretty bad. I know Sephoria for example seem to be hit up daily if not several times a day.
  11. Dumb Marinucci then?
  12. Wow this is huge According to the executive summary, Downtown Cleveland is in the midst of a $4.5 million development boom Dumb interns!
  13. I'm glad to hear somebody say its unacceptable. If only it came across as unacceptable to the Mayor, but you will never hear a peep out of him regarding such crime. There is a lot of this around CSU though. Lots of people getting beaten up by goupes of young thugs for their phones.
  14. Yeah they started doing earth moving "stuff" there on Monday and more on Tuesday. I took pictures from the CC-JJNorth building which I'll try to post later. There should be some drawings released soon for the Med school building. It is being designed by Foster + Partners of London. "The building will include an inside courtyard that will facilitate the interaction between dental, nursing and medical students to “break down the silos between those professions”.
  15. I guess I don't understand. Are there 50,000 positions that are going unfilled that these immigrants are supposed to be filling?
  16. Thanks for the great pics, and hope you are feeling better. Love the wacky looking race which I will be doing net year...? The museum ones speak for themselves, and whoever hasn't been yet needs to go. And the sweet deer I had seen around since late summer and had worried about them since they seemed so far from seclusion, but they seem to be doing ok after all.
  17. But isn't Vada just the former GRID?
  18. DeanSheen, I expected you to give an update from the meeting regarding the coin shop in the Wilsher Building. So what did you find out?
  19. Isn't Vada just in the former GRID space?
  20. They had a GE logo on the base of the pole in the design review renderings
  21. Building a school, playground and even houses next to a chemical factory being a different matter entirely of course (see Love Canal). If working with a clean slate except for the tracks, I wouldnt use the Red Line as a neighborhood developer. Its really not suited for that, as an actual streetcar would be, and the area lacks neighborhoods with the potential to grow. It doesnt lake desolation, and it doesnt lack crime. People seeking urban living for the most part are not homesteaders. Theyll move to the existing urbanist neighborhoods, perhaps on the fringes of same. Id have fewer stops. Tower City, perhaps E. 55th, E.89th/Clinic (here or possibly 55th being a connection to Shaker Rapid), UC/Cedar or 105th, Mayfield/120th, and Windermere. Probably head out to Euclid as well and maybe the Lake County Line. Similar pattern on the west side out to the Airport, and perhaps points west. Each of these stations would have bus feeder routes that dont necessarily go downtown. Yes, youd have two and even three seat trips, but far fewer acute angles to get from point A to point B. "Mixed income", by the way, is a losing battle. The issue isn't income, but values: people want to live near those with similar values. I would agree with this. The reality of the world we live in has more than shown this time and time again. Theres really no point in continually denying that...
  22. Gee I wonder how he was made aware..? He should indeed be there. .
  23. Yeah that was mentioned a while back on here, and while it wouldn't surprise me to see another walkable strip torn down in this town, I wouldn't put too much into that rumor (currently).
  24. I was thinking that after I posted....... Okay, they just told me its an antique coin shop, being opened by a very reputable businessman from Waite Hill. They are working on appropriate signage for the shop through Cudell and the city of Cleveland program that is also responsible for the appropriate storefronts that this building enjoys. I wouldn't worry about terrible signage here, its just not something my uncle would allow. In other news, Twist, one of the last businesses in the strip on the southeast corner of Clifton and 117th will likely be closing very soon, as the owner is now in Hospice.
  25. That's my uncles building and I can almost guarantee that he would not allow a cash for gold place there. I mean he has very high standards! I'm checking on this hopefully inaccurate rumor, and will keep you posted.
