Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
If that's the case, then I posted about it, I believe a couple of years ago. (I remember being concerned at the time (more about him stealing Clevelands thunder ( since to this day I still have several people ask in DC when I mention I'm going home, if I will be going to that "Grilled Cheese Restaurant" made famous from various food shows)) But if this is as far as he has gotten then I'm not too worried about it.

Cleveland: Hotel Development
And what will that tell us? It's not a convention sized hotel, It's adjacent to the convention center. What we do not need is a small hotel attached to the center. We need to take a step out of the box and build a convention sized and functioning property, period. Why does everything go over your head? It would tell us how the city of Columbus was able to get another hotel built where it really needed one (it is a notable example). It was the creative approach by the city of Columbus that got it built.

Just look to Columbus to see how they got the new Hilton Convention Hotel built.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
I did look into it yesterday but could find nothing about the chain in general (and the DC one for that matter) having trouble or any announced closings for that matter. I guess the important thing to remember here is that it was only an uncomfirmed rumor for Cleveland.

Why? Are you a fan of unsustainable and unsightly suburban sprawl? The more people in a given area, the more it can support conveniences of life (shops, restaurants, laundromats) and frequent mass transit service. I don't even know why this is even a story. Millions of people (take NYC and Tokyo for example) live in spaces that are smaller than your typical CLE apartment and its completely acceptable. Are we saying its okay for THOSE people, but not us in CLE? Higher density is what this city sorely needs. In fact, the city of Cleveland is not even the most dense city in the state, as one would expect it to be---its the suburb of Lakewood. Certainly if theres a market for them great, but to compare why they exist and are successful in New York and Tokyo is pretty off base here. The majority of the reasons they exist in New York and Tokyo do not exist in Cleveland (and the fact that the area is mostly surrounded by abandoned houses and land doesn't really bode well for the argument of why something that is successful in New York and Tokyo wouldn't also be successful in Cleveland)

Its conceptual in nature, but seems set at 8 stories though.

I believe they still are, but they (strangly) didnt claim it to be part of the distillery project. Im not sure how it stands now though.

Those are probably good guesses. I'll be watching the news a lot today. Or, pop over to the rotunda today for the lunchtime concert and ask questions of the officials on hand. Please do! Shouldn't we be getting near official word? I forgot the timetable From yesterday: "Look for an announcment this week sometime as to who won the bid for the Ameritrust complex."

Cleveland: MOCA
Ooooooo, that's good to know. My lady and I are thinking about which cultural venue to become a member of for the time being as the kids have outgrown the Science Center and such Yes good to know, although TBideon and CLE618 would hate that!

Thats great news (I had heard as much, but hadnt confirmed)..

Cleveland: Downtown: The 9 / Rotunda / County Admin Development
Good question. I was hoping to see some return to the market that hadnt been active here in while such as the Ferchill Group (who did such a nice job on the Book-Cadillac in Detroit). Plus who knows, the Morans keep getting more ambitious. Im sure they could pull something nice off. But also, would be good to see developers from outside Cleveland interested with the many projects that are now in the works or near completion. K and D cant be the only game in town and frankly needs some competition.

Cleveland: MOCA
Yes, yes Cleveland is well known for its stellar arts and cultural institutions (especially when you consider its size) but anybody that has any familiarity of the area also knows how large an extent or role that the local arts culture plays here. I have lived in many places, and none have quite matched at the level that Cleveland has in this regard. Also, most people recognize that importance and role as one of the only places that publically funds their arts organizations and groups.

Look for an announcment this week sometime as to who won the bid for the Ameritrust complex. The County apparently had several serious proposals for Ameritrust and the County Admin bldg site (all of which would stimulate downtown development). It is expected that the winning bid will have Ameritrust converted to hotel, retail and residential (and please let it be anybody but K&D)

I call it "I used to live in Cleveland but now I live someplace that I think is cooler, and that makes me cooler, I think, but I have to knock Cleveland to help me feel confirmed in my life decisions" syndrome. BINGO!

Cleveland / Lakewood: The Edge Developments
1 million seems like nothing to me for a structure like that. I really would have expected it to be much more. Where is the closes library? Would make a cool library (sort of like the main hall of the library of congress)

I dont believe Joel has any relation to the forest city clan. He has generally done admirable things, but in this case i have a feeling he will be seeking an affordable component. I agree he seems to be needlessly stepping in the way here.

DeanSheen how long have you been in that area?

Cleveland / Lakewood: The Edge Developments
"Median household income is about 6k > Cleveland as a whole." This isnt really saying a whole lot when you consider the numbers and levels of poverty in Cleveland. And the Citi-Data is somewhat meaningless if your not comparing periods to see where things are going (upscale grocery stores will invest in a gentrifying area, but typically not the other way around) While I will gladly continue to hold my breath for Heinens.... Westbrook dropped the ball on that one a while ago...... And thats as much as I will say.
-
Cleveland / Lakewood: The Edge Developments
No citation necessary. (Im not going to cite internal Heinens memo's or anything, but demographic data is available for anybody. ) Heinens isnt about density as much as demographics. (you are welcome to take it as just my opinion of course!) Also, remember Heinens has a location right across the Lakewood line. Im predicting a M#$%& outpost on this site.

Cleveland / Lakewood: The Edge Developments
LOL, Sounds like a quote from a Cleveland Browns fan. I am not shocked that Heinens would consider the W117 and Clifton area. With Edgewater and the Gold Coast there is the requisite wealth and sophistication. Heinens is really an old rumor and just not going to happen. The demographics of the area just really dont support a Heinens anymore (regardless of the sliver of nicer lakefront homes). Maybe 10 years ago when Heinens was looking into the area, but demographics have and continue to change in this area. Look for a medical facility to go here. It seems the local leaders are using the changing demographics/realities to dictate what kinds of developments will be happening in this area.

Cleveland Heights: Development and News
Then you probably shouldnt automatically relate it if others mention it. I thought this was pretty good news for this strip since we have seen a series of failed attempts here, and if Doug cant pull it off nobody can: fire's doug katz to turn historic diner cars into cafe, catering kitchen Thursday, November 15, 2012 Doug Katz, chef-owner of the popular Fire Food and Drink at Shaker Square, has purchased the vacant diner cars on Lee Road in Cleveland Heights, planning to use them as home base for a farm-to-table deli and his growing catering operation. "It's a perfect catering kitchen," says Katz of the 3,000-square-foot kitchen in the rear of the diner cars. "In one of the diner cars, I'm going to create a Fire-quality diner that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. In the other one, I'm going to create a space people can use for a catered function." Katz, who lives in Cleveland Heights, fell in love with the diners 10 years ago when one of his neighbors, Big Fun owner Steve Presser, purchased and relocated them from out of state. He later opened Dottie's Diner and Sweet City Diner. Since those closed, a string of short-lived eateries followed. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/leeroaddiners111512.aspx
