  1. So the mystery restaurant was finally publically unveiled, even though dwirthwein found it nearly 5 weeks ago.. Anyway here is more info with some renderings from the PD: Cleveland Museum of Art offers a first look at its new restaurants, 'Provenance' and 'Provenance Cafe' Published: Tuesday, August 07, 2012, 7:00 PM By Joe Crea, The Plain Dealer Closely held plans for a restaurant, cafe and private dining facilities attached to the Cleveland Museum of Art's soon-to-debut central atrium have finally been revealed. Provenance, a 76-seat fine-dining restaurant and lounge occupying roughly 1,200 square feet, and Provenance Cafe, a 67-seat casual-dining spot with an additional 144 seats extending into the adjacent atrium, will open Sunday, Oct. 28. http://www.cleveland.com/dining/index.ssf/2012/08/cleveland_museum_of_art_offers.html#incart_mrt
  2. Oh yeah its a Cleveland Restaurant that opened one a lucrative Miami outpost and then one in Boca Raton. The article talks about owner Mr. Friedlander and what a true Clevelander he is..... Being brought up downtown most of my life, I never thought I would see a resurgence like I am right now. "I love Cleveland," he added. "I think it's the greatest city in the country, and I want to be down there to support it."
  3. Wow thats a pretty big deal and will really add to the dynamic of the area (even though it is yet another restaurant). Ate there recently for the first time in Beachwood and likely the best steak I have ever had.

    Well put 8 shades.
  5. Or straight out of a page in the catalogue! At least we do know tht it would "be built as a post frame building, finished with steel roofing and siding for a pole barn commerical look"
  6. I know one person on here thinks they should cave (because "it is an either/or" "take it or leave it" (no negotiation!), since it would fill an empty lot and therefore we shouldnt have any kind of requirements or expectations because we are desperate. We certainly shouldnt be pushing for any kind of standards whatsoever . And certainly surf, the Arborvitae and forsythia should make up for it.. maybe throw in a couple of honey locust for good measure. (To think of all the design review that I sat on where CVS or Walgreens (etc) wanted to come in and build a cinder block building with a parking lot in the front, the first thing they nearly ALWAYS propose, since many communities dont realize that is typically their tactic but not their expected outcome, therefore thats what these communities end up with. I think (and hope) most realize by now that they just need to be told that they have to do better and they will (well except for the desperate ones, because "it is an either/or situation"). Just as a suburban developer needs and typically seeks guidance when building in a city...
  7. I think it just didnt recieve the funding they were hoping for, so it was merely a set back. With a need for a total of 695 units I really hope they dont plan to put many more in Ohio City.
  8. It doesnt look like from pictures on the planning agenda. And look we have reverted back to pole barns for midtown... http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/designreview/drcagenda/2012/08032012/index.php
  9. Yeah that group does a pretty nice job with design and construction, as opposed to the majority of the affordable housing that has gone up over the past few years. Initially the renderings for the landscaping were pretty elaborate with an interior reflecting pool with a sourounding elegant minimalist landscape, but I think that was when they were going to be condos. I believe the whole plan has changed somewhat since then...
  10. West end of Lakewood, Fairview Park or Berea. All safe and very close to Hopkins.
  11. Yes, thank you for your work on that Zimzolla!
  12. This should shed some light on some of the recent happenings at PHS.... Sammy's restaurant returns, coming to Cleveland's PlayhouseSquare this fall: Restaurant Row Published: Friday, July 27, 2012, 3:45 PM Updated: Friday, July 27, 2012, 4:18 PM Visitors and workers dining in Cleveland's PlayhouseSquare district have lost a place to eat -- but they're about to become reacquainted with a name long familiar to local diners. Early this week, Acapella restaurant in the Keith Building, 1625 Euclid Ave., quietly closed. Attempts to contact the restaurant's former owners were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, Art Falco, president and chief executive of PlayhouseSquare Foundation, confirmed that the former Star restaurant will become Sammy's At PlayhouseSquare. http://www.cleveland.com/dining/index.ssf/2012/07/sammys_restaurant_returns_comi.html
  13. 2nd that. And Mr. Deagan is an all around good guy too.
  14. What about Oberlin? I havent been there in a super long time so.....
  15. Yes thank you. I try to figure ways to reword what 327 continually trys to and apparently fails to get across, and you did it just about as good as anybody could have done while looking at it in a slightly different manner. For some reason many people here also seem to place an either/or or everything/nothing approach (picky/do things how ever half assed you want because we are desperate and therefore shouldnt have any standards or expectations), and yet you nailed it with "but if you have an OUNCE of aspiration for your city"...... Something that 327 has basically been saying over and over.
  16. Sounds like it will be more bar than restaurant... http://www.cleveland.com/dining/index.ssf/2012/07/clevelands_sushi_rock_restaura.html Definately sounds that way. Too bad. Although the owner (as all the other owners of places in the WHD) has also cited the downgrading of the WHD from days-gone-by due to the shifting around of districts and the changing of the population or types of people that frequent the places in the neighborhood. "There will be changes to reflect new realities in the Warehouse District, says co-owner John Kostoglou. "It's more of a bar business and the diners are going to East Fourth," he says. "You're seeing the East Bank of the Flats all over again." In the last decade, however, the action along West Sixth and Ninth streets has increasingly gone downscale, with casual bars serving younger audiences.

Yeah these lists always seem a bit wack-o. Were there mass postal layoffs maybe (which I thought Cinci ended up being largely spared of)? Also, Ohio is supposedly ranked second for U.S. job gains for June (at a gain of 18,400 jobs). I just hope that isnt again contradicted by an article indicating that Ohio is near the bottomm in terms of recovery. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/07/ohio_unemployment_rate_drops_1.html

I dont know, It looks like the Cleveland area got off pretty easy (in govt sector) compared to others.
  19. Exactly... And its about time Cleveland Orgs started applying and getting their fair share.. Thats why I started sending the RFP's out directly to Cleveland orgs last year (and 8Shades, why I started to engage Valerie at CPAC)
  20. "The Siegel and Shuster connection to Cleveland is nice, but that's about the only major connection I can think of for Cleveland off the top of my head." Are you kidding me.... OK where is the extensive list from UO a couple years ago of comic geniuses from Cleveland? Harvy Pekar, Tom Wilson, Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbs), C. Ariel Wulff, Brian Michael Bendis (too many to mention), Tom Batiuk (Funky Winkerbean and others), Derf Backderf, Peter Kuper, Brian Azzarello, John G., and of course Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, but there are still many more! And nearly all of them still reside in the area. Thats why I thought it was such a great idea and thought it would/should recieve such wide support.
  21. Yeah its currently at ICA Art Conservation on Detroit Ave being treated. It is owned by the Cleveland Foundation, which I believe was part of the Porter collection that was donated and has shown up on display around town.
  22. Im pretty sure that theres a lot of room between "disregarding/not being aware of" and "Jumping on a dreamers idea" and frankly I think the ability to not see that by some is additional cause for concern. If the guy proposing such a thing (who has admittedly been to Cleveland) should be sheduling a meeting with folks at city hall first of all so they can determine the validity of as well as determine what can be done to facilitate the possibilities here. The city in the meantime has to pursue (at least vet) all posssible leads... And sometimes that starts with having a capable person answering and screening calls and emails (now this is something that City Hall has been very poor at doing and has gained a reputation for)
  23. Its more of a recent problem. Those are all in the last month. I think they have to be somewhat related. Not a recent problem. Last summer gangs of black youths on bicycles attacked and beat 3 victims within a weeks time. One on Lake and West, one on West between Clifton and Baltic, and another on Detroit near W 115. It's a trend and the race observation is correct and valuable if you want to be aware of possible trouble. There have been lots of break-ins in the last year according to people in the neighborhood of Lake Ave and West Blvd. I did hear about the attacks at A Touch of Class last year as well. As well as plenty of problems on Edgewater. I saw it coming years ago...
  24. This seems like a no brainer with the comic book talent that has come out of Cleveland, yet it takes someone from New York to propose.. I think the local foundations would definitely provide a good portion of funding. I was a bit concerned with the fact that Mr. Jackson mentioned he "was not familiar with it" after Rautio had emailed the plans to him, since city hall has a history of botching such things or coming across as showing lack of interest. This isn't something we want to to slip through our hands and go to another city which I'm sure would be aggressive in pursuing and more than willing to jump on. On the other hand I think it deserves a more than an email.....
  25. I'm guessing the far west suburban schools?
