  1. I sure hope so. I strongly believe that East Cleveland and Cleveland should merge asap, like, yesterday. I just think it would be better for everyone. There's just so much work to be done in East Cleveland that I'm not sure if they can get it all done on their own. If a merger took place, Cleveland's population would be immediately put back over 400,000 (E.C has roughly 17,000 residents) and the city has much more resources in terms of infrastructure, etc, which can help E.C and its residents. But yes, this is a very good thing. And could likely put Cleveland back at #1 for highest poverty rate. Also, Other than a couple of nabes that are doing ok, Im not so sure that Cleveland is able t handle their own neighborhoods very well. We shall see...
  2. That's an understatement.
  3. More good stuff: Charter One Foundation pledges $183,000 for Ohio City redevelopment efforts By KATHY AMES CARR 11:14 am, September 13, 2011 Charter One has pledged another round of support for Ohio City redevelopment efforts. The Charter One Foundation through its Growing Communities Initiative will allocate $183,000 to five nonprofits with programs focused on rejuvenating the Cleveland community, bringing to $330,000 its total investment to date. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20110913/FREE/110919960
  4. It sounds like JMC was already looking to move to Chicago. That incentive was certainly not worth moving for, they could have gotten the same/better from Beechwood and Ohio. This is a rather standard incentive that you could get out of just about any city. I say they were looking to move to Chicago..... Bastards. *Oh and the fact that they are going downtown Chicago when they were in Beachwood here only adds insult to injury. Bastards.
  5. They did a pretty painstaking restoration 10 years ago, which included replacing and resealing all the glass in the skylights etc., so I couldnt imagine there could be too many structural issues/code violations. I'm just surprised with all the buzz and renewed interest from so many hoteliers that nobody even attempeted to bid on this. The Crains article does say that the hotel lost money in both 2009 and 2010, but expected things to be turning around as the industry recovers and with the opening of the casino and convention center etc.... Here is the Crains article: http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20110912/FREE/110919979
  6. I'm guessing so. They said they potentially had a brewpub lined up for the lower floor.
  7. Ouch! Wow nobody interested at that bargain price... A bit heartbreaking. Historic Arcade in downtown Cleveland fails to attract bidders at sheriff's auction Published: Monday, September 12, 2011, 10:15 AM Updated: Monday, September 12, 2011, 10:42 AM By Michelle Jarboe McFee, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Despite a $7.7 million price tag, the historic Arcade failed to attract a single bid at a Cuyahoga County sheriff's sale this morning. ............It's likely that the property will go up for auction again, at a lower price. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2011/09/historic_arcade_in_downtown_cl_1.html
  8. About that, but Key Investments didnt have a 60 million renovation 10 years ago. I'm not sure what to think since I got in a big email argument with Roldo Bartimore a couple years ago about why it was a good investment for the city and county, when he was criticising it as handouts etc., now it looks like they wont recout their investments. But hopefully it attracts a good owner.. It really is a jewel.
  9. Well there was a story about this a couple of weeks ago somewhere (I'll re-post if I find). There are many ways to measure the impact and depending on what study you look at, you may come away with a different answer. There is no doubt in my mind that the positives far outweigh any negatives especially when you consider the intangibles as Hootenany mentioned (but the people that are looking at a very fine set of variables may not see it that way). Besides, look at the love Cleveland got from the Avengers crew in the "I love Cleveland" thread. This kind of stuff is hard to measure, yet could end up being priceless.
  10. Well thank you for taking the initiative Zimzolla. I find it hard to believe that nobody else has come forward questioning this (especially when you consider all the squaking on here). *and especially considering there is a rather highly reputable historic preservation program right on the campus..? I find it hard to believe that they couldnt at least look at saving the facade.... and that it would be beyond saving or too expensive to attempt. Zimzolla, make sure that on top of informing the Restoration Society that you also inform the Columbia building Facebook group (I believe you were also active on that site). I'll see if I can get a letter together from the National Trust.
  11. Oh, like with the Historic tax credit?
  12. Heres more about it in todays Crains. It got a nice donation from Mixon and Co. Although in the article its not clear if it will be housed in an existing building or a new building? $5M gift to CWRU will help fund innovation initiative Invacare execs' donation will provide space to develop products, technology By TIMOTHY MAGAW 4:30 am, September 5, 2011 Invacare Corp.'s A. Malachi Mixon III and Joseph B. Richey II know a bit about rubbing elbows with other driven individuals to get a business venture off the ground, so the pair has invested $5 million in Case Western Reserve University's entrepreneurship and innovation programs. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20110905/SUB1/309059976
  13. Wow its true! Never doubt the Borger....
  14. Both of these things have already been confirmed. The first being one of their requirements already mentioned and the second confirmed by KJP a while back.
  15. Heres an article on Cleveland.com about the crane. It is currently at 280ft and will grow to 380ft, but we wont talk about that, because then we'd be off topic..? Crane operator sways high above Cleveland as Flats East Bank project rises from ground Published: Friday, August 26, 2011, 6:46 PM Updated: Friday, August 26, 2011, 7:21 PM By Michelle Jarboe McFee, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer The tower crane, now 280 feet tall, will be tied to the office building's core and extended to 380 feet before VanFossen's yearlong stint in the sky is done. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2011/08/crane_operator_sways_high_abov.html
  16. "There is a lot of activity going on with infrastructure now to make Cleveland a more bike-friendly city." Except for right around the corner at Ontario and Prospect!
  17. It seems this is gone over about every week. Cleveland, read the posts on here from the past week.

I think someone previously mentioned that they don't have their own permanent collection, thus they don't need as much space. Thats right.
  19. I think I saw some workers hanging another guy up by his underwear and they were swinging him around on it. It's being put to good use. Other than that, usually a crane is used to move things through the air, not so much on the ground. :-D
  20. Well they were making the aqrgument for near and adequate parking. There was never really a confirmation of what the language actually was, nor did anybody with the city actually request this for confirmation or the details of this (which I think even you were saying the city should have required, before bending over). Also, in the amendment, the casino site for Cleveland was specified very broadly so that these options were open.
  21. Captain America is Chris Evans, but also "Thor" was supposedly filming today as well. That is Chris Hemsworth. Next week look for Scarlett Johansson filming on Public Square.
  22. Everyone seems to be forgetting State and Federal officials as well. We knew that Cleveland was going to approve (they only had asked for some revisions).
  23. And then here it is on Cleveland.com this afternoon: 'I, Alex Cross': Profiling the profiler played by Tyler Perry in movie filming in ClevelandPublished: Thursday, August 18, 2011, 5:00 PM Perry and the "I, Alex Cross" crew have been spotted around Cuyahoga County this month, filming scenes from the movie -- everywhere from XO Prime Steaks in the Warehouse District to Bellfield Avenue in Cleveland Heights. http://www.cleveland.com/moviebuff/index.ssf/2011/08/i_alex_cross_profiling_the_pro.html
  24. Wow, filming all over downtown. I didnt realize the "I, Alex Cross" one started.
