Cleveland: Filling in Euclid Avenue
An article in Crains this week about the state of Euclid Avenue. Euclid Avenue's renaissance A couple notable things: Doug Price, worries the city will lose its hard-won momentum as a downtown residential market. He said K&D's Residences at 668, a $60 million makeover to 232 apartments of the onetime Taylor department store and Atrium Office Plaza, has a waiting list of more than 300 people (we have heard varying numbers). “We're in danger of stifling that because we don't have quality new product for young professionals,” Mr. Price said. For its part, K&D has revised its plans for the Ameritrust complex, dropping a hotel component and streamlining it to apartments and service retail. The proposal is dependent on whether K&D gets to renew its quest for the skyscraper; Cuyahoga County, which owns the complex, is studying its own office needs before deciding whether to dispose of the skyscraper. Great to hear that something may still be in the works for Ameritrust, but out of all the buildings being considered for hotels, the Ameritrust has one of the best set-ups with the grand rotunda, which is perfect for a hotel lobby/restaurant/lounge. Where buildings like John Hartness that has a hotel in the works seems a better fit for residential since it lacks the grand lobby space component. Also, I do worry that we are not yet hearing about new residential conversion or builds downtown. I know that we are in a stange period, so hopefully something else will be announced soon.. Ari Maron, a principal in MRN, sees plotting Euclid's future more simply. He said MRN is pursuing, and close to signing, tenants to fill the three empty storefronts it has left on Euclid. It also is on the hunt for more office tenants for Rosetta Tower, 629 Euclid, named after new anchor tenant Rosetta Marketing Group LLC. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20110801/SUB1/308019999/0/FRONTPAGE

Cleveland: Demolition Watch
I havent seen anything since the meeting. Since the mayor is so much behind it I think it is pretty much a done deal (although some group was trying to make the market overlap due to another McDonald's and issue (and a hole in their analysis of the importance of this site)). Yeah the site plan is pretty pathetic and depressing. So likely they will be trying to address a few of the biggest concerns like having a smaller set back and traffic concerns for the sidestreet since the only exit would be there... It seem the mayor is more appropriate for somewhere like Westlake since he doesnt seem to see the importance of retaining the urban fabric at all.

Although it would look rather strange of the second bridge was a different design than the first one.

Cleveland: Filling in Euclid Avenue
Heres a good compilation of buildings that have come down in recent years along Euclid (or in this case, severly damaged)... Euclid Avenue: What we've lost and what we will probably lose. http://www.clevelandareahistory.com/2010/09/euclid-avenue-what-weve-lost-and-what.html *At the end, he makes an argument for why we need to keep the building next to Dunam Tavern

Wow! Very strange to actually see it starting to take shape.

The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
Without a doubt.. My partner was a little put off even when we were looking at mansions in Shaker and the roads were just aweful (ones that seemingly would have been paved with gold). It was a strange feeling/a bad sign/indication of the economic conditions everywhere there... *FYI, I believe MLK is supposed to be paved sometime next year... Its kindof embarrassing when your tryng to show off the place...

Damn-it Mayday do you have to keep posting pics of this ;)..... For some reason I sort of doubt that they are recycling, just my feeling. With all the criticism of this teardown, I would think if they were doing any sort of recycling, they would be touting it as some sort of consolation.. Of course I could be wrong.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
There's no question that weather plays a large part. I worked for 3 differrent Ice cream places growing up... One was a family business. But, they all made there money over the summer to sustain them over the winter where they either just closed or also sold food that helped to sustain them or not loss as much. I mean who wants to go out in the freezing cold to get something freezing cold? Dont over-look the obvious.

What does the climate have to do with the sale of Ice Cream/Yogurt/Custard/Gelato? I dont see a direct corelation. Um, lots, thats why many just close down in the winter (Honey Hut, traditional road side ice cream places etc.) There often isnt enough business in the winter to sustain these places being open.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
It was actually awesome that nearly every comment was a Cleveland defender! Made me proud. So did they change the headline then? The one I saw wasnt the negative Cleveland one.

Cleveland: Edgewater Park
Although for urban parks such as Edgewater there would be a big argument about a user fee limiting access for the poor. It will likely eventually be maintained by the Metroparks.

Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio
Is there still that old miniature golf course there. It was really old but fun (as a kid) with a windmill and things like that. In fact this was supposedly the first miniature golf course anywhere. There was also a regular, boring "putt puttt just down the road from there, as well as go carts. Come to think of it I think one time I was back through there a long while ago, that miniature golf course was abandoned and full of weeds. *"it's the oldest miniature golf course in the U.S" http://www.midwestliving.com/travel/interest/lakes-rivers/six-great-midwest-lake-towns/?page=4

Cleveland: Hotels, Conventions, and Tourism News & Info
Whatever... I havent seen where the possibly 2 new Kimpton's (Klimpton's) were not referred to as boutique hotels (likely especially due to they would be individual and not part of any of the already established names Kimpton has) even though they would still carry the Kimpton name (or the Aloft for that matter). Its fine if you want to disagree with how the defination has been thrown around, but realize that the majority of people do consider these boutique hotels..

Cleveland: Hotels, Conventions, and Tourism News & Info
I didnt say you said anything. Im talking about what is proposed for Clev.. as in smaller hotel properties.... and why in order to draw larger conventions reasons that convention planners might want a convention sized hotel. I thought I was on the same page as you, but nevermind................

Cleveland: Hotels, Conventions, and Tourism News & Info
But also MTS doesnt a "big convention hotel" near a convention center often host co/host conventions as a host hotel (in that they are large and co-manage larger converntion functions).... So the actual convention/main events might be held in the convention center and the connected/near by convention hotel might have a preferred convention rate where convention goers might stay and go to seminars and classes and receptions in the many spaces located at the the hotel. Boutique hotels wouldnt be able to offer this space but would offer the other hotel options that peole would be looking for as well.

Cleveland: North Collinwood / Waterloo Arts District: Development and News
That reminds me in the PD yesterday, Salty Not Sweet, an artsy store that opened on Warterloo last year, but didnt get any foot traffic, ended up moving to 25th street in Ohio City (in the area near Room Service), where the small amount of foot traffic equates to "much more". In many places you could have easily lost your shirt barely having any business for nearly a year, but not in Cleveland's low rent commercial districts... "After opening up her quirky alt-craft and gift shop Salty Not Sweet on Waterloo Road in the spring of 2010, she just didn't get the foot traffic she'd hoped for. "We could go days without any walk-ins," says Squire, who co-owns Salty Not Sweet with fellow artisan Melissa Major and makes -- yes, you've got it -- the salty-but-not-sweet greeting cards and stationery that the store carries." "It's going really well, there's so much more traffic in the neighborhood. It's so much more alive any day, but especially on market days," says Squire. http://www.cleveland.com/goingout/index.ssf/2011/07/salty_not_sweet_moves_into_ohi.html
