Cleveland: Downtown: The Avenue District
I think many would feel it is in a rather secluded and desolate area with just the one building, even though it is just a stone’s throw from many things, including you Doc Broc. Also, they used very expensive construction methods for this building, so I think many wouldn’t be able to justify paying those prices for something that isn’t on Public Square or on the water and instead in the mentioned spot… If after the rent-out of the remaining units, and in the semi near future they decide to build additional building with the idea of renting, they would likely either have to build a much cheaper product or wait till there truly is a better market for these types of units. At the current (last active) prices for these units, it would minimally require about $3,500 a month in rent for the smaller units, which may be a bit unrealistic for Cleveland and as well for this spot.

Cleveland: Demolition Watch
Did anyone go to the Landmarks meeting? X? I was wondering what the general mood was. I realize that construction was stopped but this is just temporary, and maybe the best time to engage everyone in what seems to be turning out as some not so very good ideas from the Casino group. I fear if there isnt some vocal opposition early on to some of these poorly thought out ideas that the city and Landmarks commission may just give the go ahead to the casino folks, as to appear friendly to a group at least willing to invest downtown. In reality, they need to be told to look at additional options (since there are many), therefore minimizing the destruction of the existing fabric, while utilizing and even expanding on what is already there. In most cases if there isnt any opposition they are just going to take the cheapest and easiest route, even though there may be many better ways with an end result that has a much greater benefit to the whole. The city also really needs to seek clarity on what the real plan is going to be here (why so much emphasis and destruction on something that is proposed to be a first phase and not the main structure?). That Group "The Cleveland Coalition" even came up with some good options of weaving in the needs with the existing fabric and connecting parking from underground in space that already exists, so I was hoping they would at least be represented in these intial meetings. By the way if my records are correct the Chair of the Cleveland Landmarks Commission is Jennifer Coleman, the woman that put together the City Prowl audio tours, and has said hello on the board before.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
Yeah that's usually what it amounts to... Certainly a good guess the top executives live out there. Dont forget Mayfield Hts not only offers close proximity for those executives but lots of free parking in a sea of parking lots right outside your door, since parking is such a hassle, and exhorbanently expensive downtown.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
No it doesnt at all sound like they were poached. I know that they were evaluating options for a while. I would hope the city was in on those discussions at least somewhat. Funny though the description of the building they said that they wanted and were looking for seemed to fit what they were already in downtown (well a free standing, 3 story building), I guess we dont know all of the other factors that came into play though.

So the Landmarks site has all the renderings with the lovely pedestrian bridge. It would go across diagonal. Just aweful :wtf:

Cleveland: Little Italy: Development and News
I would hope so. We looked at the place over Easter, and thought how strange it was that such a nice development was in such a strange spot..

Cleveland: Downtown: The Avenue District
Im hearing that the current building will likely be turned into rental units. And since there were not that many sold, the current occupants will likely be bought out.

Cleveland: Cleveland Critical Mass (Group Bicycling)
So was the after part at the Palooka Chili place?

And again where would these pedestrian bridges go (they certainly are not in any of the pictures)? The welcome center isnt directly across from the Higbee building.

Ohio: Fortune 500 Companies Updates & Discussion
I would hope not. Although it does usually have some sort of impact on local giving/wealth. Many of the amenities and institutions that Cleveland has is a product of this.

Ohio: Fortune 500 Companies Updates & Discussion
Hmmmmm..... I was wondering about that. But then I saw that Burlington Northern Santa Fe was still on the 2010 list even though BH bought it in 2009. But checking the 2011 list, it is gone, so I suppose you are right. It's odd because BH is a holdings company and Lubrizol will maintain its name, its structure, and stay in Wickliffe as far as I know. That would be too bad. I remember when Cleveland had 14.

Galleria/ Tower City Restaurant destination?
But CDM lives closer to Indy, so is authority... As well as with DC and Cleveland.... Oh wait we live in those places..! *FYI, HTS removed his post, so now mine doesnt make as much sense.

Galleria/ Tower City Restaurant destination?
Understanding the landscape of the places that are being talked about and compared is pretty relevent, (especially in regard to this last page), it really helps to explain the attitutes towards this (just ask Chef Richard). D.C. had a healthy downtown well before there were any decent indy places.... Its the nations capital!, it just made for a rather un-interesting place. Also, if we were on the subject of enveronmental issues which we are not, the Cuyahoga river is rather applicable to how we view the river today and a reason of much of the progress that has been made. I would like to think that because of it Clevelanders are more environmentally conscious, I know the country is (the establishment of clean water standards).

What cause..? Your talking about differences of opinion which you as well have. But you also dont live in DC or Cleveland, and yes as I said DC finally has some decent indy restaurants, but that is fairly recent... Doesnt seem your aware of the terrible reputation the city food scene had not that long ago. Its exploding now from the pent up demand... Its frankly a gold mine, but the talent is all imported.

Galleria/ Tower City Restaurant destination?
Uh you live in DC.... That explains it. DC has millions of tourists that love that sh#t... They wouldn't know quality if they saw it.. But also, until fairly recently DC didn't really have much in the way of quality independent places. It was the only city Ive ever been or lived in where you were better off recommending chains, because they had higher standards than the few crappy local places that catered to one time tourist visits or temporary residents that didn't care about anything other than the job they were here for. I agree, now they finally have a nice mix for the people here. But still, I go to chains here that I would never go to in Cleveland. Another thing, Cleveland had quality independent places first and formost. When there is a need for the other places they will happen. (One of Clevelands greatest strengths is its independent, creative and great restaurant/food scene (just read the Post travel articles of Cleveland or DC Food bloggers)) . Its also always usually the first thing visitors I bring from DC notice... the abundance of great independent places from coffee shops to bakeries to sports bars to restaurants etc... Things they havent seen in DC, and they are always overly impressed and jealous in that (must just be the type of people I hang out with). If Cleveland is snobbish food wise, good for them... They have sophisticated palettes. I know I cant wait to go back next weekend because of it. Its much better than being snobbish because they think they are important as they are in DC.... When there develops an overwhelming need for the other stuff in order to make Cleveland seem more like everywhere else Im sure it will happen, but I certainly dont mind if the locals take care of some of the needs talked in this thread in the meantime. Keep it unique Cleveland!

Cleveland: Food Trucks/Carts News & Discussion
Yes they were, and apparently didnt go unnoticed..: Restaurateur Rocco Whalen brings food truck downtown, gets cited by the cityCLEVELAND, Ohio — Fahrenheit chef/owner Rocco Whalen decided to take a stand on the illegality of food trucks in downtown Cleveland on Friday..... the city added a couple of sour dishes in the form of two citations -- one for failing to have a peddler's license, the other for selling food from a truck in the central business district without a license....... "They're just angry people," he said of city inspectors, who showed up after a hot dog vendor called to complain. (Note to hot dog vendor: The people lining up for cod sandwiches aren't going to buy hot dogs instead.)...... "Cleveland has a way of making every situation harder than it has to be." http://www.cleveland.com/tipoff/index.ssf/2011/04/restaurateur_rocco_whalen_brin.html

Governor John Kasich
Yes I guess the people that didnt vote would be the ones to blame. But the NATIONAL recession, blame the Democrat Governor that was in office during tactic was used in many states, and I know in the case of Maryland it didnt work (people saw through).... I guess I just thought that with the threat of the rather drastic changes that would be in store and amount of obvious misinformation that was cast before the election that there wasnt more of a concerted effort against the election of Kasich. That more Democrats, or others for that matter that dont like the type of tactics somebody like Kasich uses didnt come out against.

Governor John Kasich
Sorry if this was already posted: Ohioans need the right to remove John Kasich from office (petition)http://signon.org/sign/ohioans-need-the-right?source=s.fb&r_by=64592 I guess I just dont really get it... As much as I knew it would be a disaster if he was elected, why does everybody seem so surprised at his actions thus far..?? Is he not just following through on his platform that he ran under??? Isnt it the people that elected him that are to blame... It doesnt seem like it was that difficult to see this coming based on doing a bit of homework on the guy.

Cleveland: 2014 Gay Games IX News & Discussion
Apparently there are still court battles being fought... A judge ruled for the city in one instance I know of, but there is still a suit against the city by Synergy. But the important thing is that the Federation has officially ruled that they would be held in Cleveland, but I think people need to hear more about whats happening. Like is there a big plan in the works and where things stand..? But do know that people are working tirelessly behind the scenes... As far as a ground zero, I guess with the lack of a centralized district and gay bars, likely the clubs and bars downtown would just become gay bars for the duration of the event, much like they would for the G2H2 happy hours. Then maybe certain neighborhoods could host events on certain nights (tremont/gay gallery hop and restaurant night, Detroit Shoreway, gay themed productions, movies and restaurants one night and so on...), since I think with the current state of everything gay, concentrating on one neighborhood might be setting up for disappointment with the lack of a centralized gay area as many larger cities have, it would give a taste of some of Cleveland's cool but possibly hard to find neighborhoods.
