Cleveland: Jack Cleveland Casino
The casino will be 4 floors. and this this from the Crains article.... I thought they instead were making a case that it would be connected, and not seperate...? Mr. Gilbert would not confirm to Crain's speculation that he and his partners will seek to change the constitutional language that is bringing casino gambling to Ohio so that they can operate gambling halls at two disconnected sites, which would allow the Higbee complex to stay open after the permanent casino opens. Mr. Gilbert said the money would be worth it if the Cleveland operation had first mover advantage in the state.

This crains article about the announcement confirms the $350 million is on top of the $600 million for the permanent one. Thats quite an investment! I cant imagine what would make the first phase cost $350 million though. Cleveland Horseshoe Casino receives formal unveiling By JAY MILLER 3:05 pm, February 3, 2011 If all goes as planned, Cleveland will have the first casino in Ohio in early 2012 when the Cleveland Horseshoe Casino opens its temporary, $350 million first phase in the Higbee Building at Tower City Center. That money is in addition to the $600 million investment planned for the permanent casino south of Tower City. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20110203/FREE/110209930

Cleveland: Jack Cleveland Casino
Certainly I think that has been many people's concern from the start. Casino's have become so saturated, so it is no longer a unique thing to attract people from outside the area (thus most people realized that the projected numbers were way inflated), as Pittsburgh also found out. The added worry I have is if the race tracks also end up offering gambling (+ that goofball proposal for a mega casino/race track for Youngstown). That was one of the initial problems with Pittsburgh is that it was easier for people outside of the city to go to the racetrack casino than downtown... At least now they have approved table games, which makes the downtown casino a bigger draw than it was. I guess you can look at it as an additional amenity for poeple and visitors, that could make it more appealing for conventions and such to want to come.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway: Battery Park
tedders55 they are not necessarily even on hold. As FrqntFlyr indicated they are part of future phases (part of 3 and 4) of which we are at phase 2. Not to say that things cant change in he future depending on what they have success with.

I really like most of their stuff. Look at the site plan for the Hazel drive housing in U.C.! Anyway I believe the loft building they show if for the old Pat Catan's building next to Battery Park..

That why they needed to extend the convention center over the tracks. But the new configuration isnt going to allow for additional exhibit hall space to the north.

TMH, that was actually one of the positive lists Cleveland made it on, which was all the more ironic that they would choose to use this type of picture...

Well I guess this evens it out, even though it follows the troubling pattern of new jobs being produced further away from the traditional manufacturing areas (where the jobs are most needed) Solon's Energy Focus to Make Solar Lighting, Add 100 JobsWith a $1 million state grant, company could become a player in solar industry By Roger Mezger | Email the author | February 1, 2011 A Solon company that makes energy-efficient lighting will soon become a manufacturer of solar panels as well, with the help of a $1 million state grant. As a result, the company expects to add roughly 100 jobs – mostly production workers http://solon.patch.com/articles/energy-focus-to-make-solar-lighting-product-in-ohio

At least the "moving the river" is officially off the table. To add parking at the casino, the developer had looked filling in about 29 feet of the Cuyahoga River near Collision Bend, which drew sharp criticism from the public. He said yesterday that changing the river is no longer on the table.

Terminal Tower Private Tour
Heres a great read I found in Ohio Authority that I had posted in another thread. Its sounds like they didnt really stay at the Terminal Tower suite (Dont forget they had the Shaker Heights mansion and Hunting Valley Estate as well). The Van Sweringen brothers' tale is as rich as the fortune they would ultimately accumulate. http://ohioauthority.com/articles/region/the-top-suite additional pictures: http://ohioauthority.com/photos/gallery/the-greenbrier-suite

Actually the plan now is to connect Public Hall to the Convention Center, below ground. They would still demolish that glass addition though. MMPI later angered the city when it said it had discovered that Public Auditorium, originally included in the project, suffered from tens of millions of dollars in deferred maintenance on utilities. Public Auditorium will remain in city hands, although MMPI agreed to join it to the new convention center. http://blog.cleveland.com/architecture/2010/11/now_its_a_real_deal_cuyahoga_c.html

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
Great story! I especially liked the following parts....... Regarding the East Bank project: “The project's developers already are planning for their second phase, which could include residences and retail” The West bank: “the K&D Group once again is toying with building more apartments to complement its rentals and condos at the Stonebridge community.” And from Al Ratner of Forest City Enterprises: “I think there are phenomenal opportunities in the Flats that we haven't taken advantage of…… the area that has the greatest opportunity for mixed-use development that will appeal to the kind of people we need to attract to this city is the Flats”. Maybe he will finally put some money where his mouth is.

Well Ive always heard that Cleveland has more bars per capita than any other city, which apparently means it has more amenities than any city in Ohio, so yes I guess that would make it a straight mecca. Yeah I just looked it up. According to many sources Cleveland not only has the "most bars per capita" but also "most golf courses per capita", a straight mecca indeed.

Then why didnt you just say "more gay bars" as opposed to "tons of amenities that cant be found elsewhere in the state". I ususally consider amenities as something that contributes to quality of life, not so much a place to drink or hook up. But realistically likely the only people that that is going to matter to is young gay people which without a doubt Columbus has an abundance of due to the University.

I didnt realize you were equating gay bars to "amenities". That I would give you, but not really what I think of when I think of amenities... In fact I find that rather odd :||

Cleveland: Downtown: A.J. Celebrezze Federal Building Renovation
The other day somebody mentioned that they thought there was supposed to be some sort of lighting component, which I also remembered. I finally found this, but its nowhere to be found now..? https://home.crainscleveland.com/celebreezefederalbldgfacade041010ab35124 By Stan Bollard One of the most high-profile Cleveland area projects of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act should be well underway by next year, but it will also transform the downtown Cleveland skyline. The Recovery Act funded roof and facade replacement is scheduled to begin in spring 2011 but could start as early as this summer. "Green" energy-saving elements of the project include increased water/energy conservation from the roof/facade improvements and modernization of various mechanical systems, including installation of a support pole for a wind turbine to be installed at a later date. The work is expected to be completed in 2015. GSA completed a prospectus level renovation on the building in fall 2009 that included plaza renovation, installation of a new fire management system, and replacement of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system. What most passersby will notice is the installation of a new glass facade containing photovoltaic LED lighting; this will enable GSA engineers to monitor HVAC system output as well as detect energy loss. The LED cells will register energy loss or transfer by a change in color; the cells will also be tested in certain windows and if successful, will be used for those not included in the original test.

Just curious, what would those amenities be that cant be found elsewhere in the state? *I mean I lived in Columbus for a number of years and agree that it is likely Ohio's most out city (mostly as result of its demographic), but I tended to think of Columbus as lacking the amenities that I was used to having in Cleveland and other places (as in not as cosmopolitan).
