Cleveland: Downtown: A.J. Celebrezze Federal Building Renovation
Yeah, they have been doing that like crazy in DC, but the difference is they are not removing the old exterior.

In Crains: Groundbreaking set for Cleveland aquarium project By JAY MILLER 10:32 am, January 27, 2011 The fish finally will have a home in the Flats. An e-mailed invitation is announcing the Feb. 2 groundbreaking for the $33 million first phase of what’s being called the Greater Cleveland Aquarium. It will be housed in the Powerhouse on the west bank of the Flats. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20110127/FREE/110129824

Cleveland Heights-South Euclid: Oakwood Commons
Smith, Im just curious, but do you really feel there is demand for retail/big box stores in the area? Maybe there is, I would just be surprised though.

Cleveland: District of Design
Awesome news on both fronts. Viktor a legond, and Valeria a hero. I somewhat wish that the Shreckengost gallery was more integrated into Play House Square/District of Design (it should be a centerpiece), but its still a great space for it.

Cleveland-Lakewood: Enhance Clifton Transit Project
I think the aesthetic aspects of this project alone are greatly needed, and could go a long way in helping to stabilize the area, so I can’t wait to see it materialize along with the shoreway project. Having spent the summers in the Edgewater neighborhood growing up, and having friends and family that still live and have businesses in the neighborhood, it has been sad to see it go downhill as much as it has the past few years. It’s been rather blatant to me since I did a lot of work with the neighborhood, the community development corporation, and the block club before I moved to DC (and since I still keep regular tabs on the area). A couple of years ago, the think-tank I worked for was working on an analysis/study of Cleveland’s still intact and viable neighborhoods. At the conclusion the focus neighborhoods could qualify for special/federal funding to carry out some of the recommended initiatives. The Clifton Edgewater neighborhood was one that we focused on, but the data did show some rather sharp changes in socio-economics/demographics and accompanied crime rates (the same pattern frankly carried into Lakewood). Business owners and residents interviewed echoed this, with more than I would have expected having been a victim of or witness to crime (There has been a problem with hold-ups and robberies that had moved to the Clifton area and north, plus the area had apparently become quite a drug area). Some of the residents frankly haven’t stuck around and moved to places like Westlake (Ugh) One of our suggestions/recommendations was of course targeted investment in infrastructure/transit/beautification, in part due to the state of the area and the need to shift the tide and people’s attitudes (it was starting to get a bad reputation) and not just because of empty storefronts. Recently, we have been looking at homes on Edgewater (due to our impending move back to Cleveland) among a couple of other areas (MTS), so I really want to see things turn around here. Hanging by a thread may be a bit of an exaggeration, but not necessarily to the people that have or are considering abandoning this neighborhood. This really should be a prime neighborhood, so it’s important not to ignore the realities and changes that have taken place. After all if they are not first acknowledged they cannot properly be dealt with. As some would say that is the reason Cleveland has seen the decline that it has. I think that is definitely at least somewhat true. Jerry I will be in touch.

Governor John Kasich
I agree. I know some very sweet pitbulls, but also know of many instances where a pit bull has turned on its owner/other dogs or other people (and certainly were not brought up to fight). My understanding is that breed does have an aggressive instinct that can be pretty successfully suppressed, but you do have to be very cautious with them.

Cleveland: Union Terminal (Tower City)
I while back there was a dicussion about the Van Sweringen's suite in the Terminal Tower. There is a really good article in "Ohio Authority" this month about it, with a few pictures. If this is the wrong place for it, feel free to move. The Top Suite Exploring the Van Sweringens' secret Terminal Tower http://ohioauthority.com/articles/region/the-top-suite/page/1

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
No silly, the house would be moved to Wade Park Ave. This would be at the other end of the campus across from the baseball diamond near E 115th.

Cleveland: Downtown: Mall Development and News
sounds like the people on Cleveland.com, worried that this would be a draw for black and or thugs, since many think the two are interchangeable. If I said tennis or miniature golf court, would the same amount of hate be written? Better yet would it even be up for discussion. Granted I think many of those comments are by people who do not live in the city center or know anything about urban living/neighborhoods. Doubtfully since I dont know of many thugs that like to play tennis or miniature gold for that matter.

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
Oh and Jborger did have it right all along! I'm still sticking with my story that I said back in August: that Danielle (the owner of Room Service) is opening a retail store in that location on East 4th -- in addition to the one she's moving to West 25th.

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
This will be pretty cutting edge, and hopefully will set the stage for much more. DeBoe and Bilovecky are very dynamic people, so together I think they can accomplish great things. I was a bit shocked about Wrath Arcane though. An example of a Cleveland success story (designed and some made in Cleveland), but I thought was pretty pricey and somewhat nichy (sold in a store near me in DC), but it sounds like the new brand may appeal to a broader crowd.

Cleveland: Downtown Aquarium
And dont forget the third proposal (Great waters (or Great Lakes Aquarium)) by some other dedicated fish people (these are the ones that I always mixed up and thought they should merge their efforts) The powerhouse one is strictly a tourist attraction/money maker one for Jacobs, and wasnt out of a love of marine life. Not to say that it couldnt be nice. Heres a story from the Toledo Blade last year that talked about the 3 different ones.. http://toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100118/NEWS24/1180348/-1/NEWS

Yes both of these expansions were announced about a year ago. Its good to see expansion as opposed to abandon for once over there.

Cleveland: Best Happy Hours/Nightly Specials
Agree with bumsquare. You can basically try any restaurant that you may think is too pricey. They pretty much all have happy hour food specials that give you a nice taste of what kind of food they serve. In fact you Clevelanders are very fortunate like that!

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Thats too bad... I was really hoping that they would be able to use some of the trees somewhere else. Especially the oak trees that were more recently planted on Mall C. I didnt think they were that big to move. They probably just figured it was more trouble than it was worth.

Cleveland: Cleveland Museum of Art Expansion / Renovation
Another article about the new director of the Museum. I do like that he wants to see life again around the fine arts garden and lagoon area. He seems to have a fresh vision and came in with an appreciation for what is there that sometimes the locales lack (although on paper he may lack the experience running a major museum). David Franklin looks ahead to productive years as director of Cleveland Museum of ArtPublished: Sunday, January 02, 2011, 9:00 AM By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer David Franklin has been the new director of the Cleveland Museum of Art for only a few months, but he definitely has a favorite hangout at work. It's the glass-enclosed gallery devoted to the sculptures of Auguste Rodin on the southern tip of the museum's new East Wing. http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2011/01/david_franklin_looks_ahead_to.html

Cleveland Heights-South Euclid: Oakwood Commons
Well the worst possible scenario for Oakwood country club. I know the trust for public land was trying to raise funds to buy it. They were also trying to involve the metroparks, but they ran out of time. Just what we need more retail. Oakwood Country Club sold to commercial developer Published: Thursday, December 30, 2010, 12:01 AM Shopping center developer First Interstate Properties of Lyndhurst plans upscale apartments near the country club's old mansion and a new shopping center on part of the golf course. The shopping center would be anchored by three or four large national retailers, roughly 20 medium to smaller stores and four to six restaurants. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/12/oakwood_country_club_sold_to_c.html
