  1. Big update on the Allen Theater/Playhouse/CSU project. This will be an amazing project for Playhouse Square, Im just cringing at the thought of what they are going to do to the interior of the Allen to make it smaller and more intimate. All that wonderful detail that was restored not that long ago, would altered or partially covered by panels and the theater's size reduced dramatically (in some of the renderings it reminds me of some of the mistakes we made in the 60's and 70,s). Its being descibed as "The architectural details of the auditorium and lobby -- dominated by a columned dome -- would continue to peek out at the audience from behind acoustical panels and other new elements, creating what Westlake's Matt Janiak called a multilayered contrast of styles and materials." But I guess all the pluses that would be associated with this certainly should overcome those negative factors, and add much life to the district. Proposed renovation of PlayhouseSquare's Allen Theatre promises big payoff By Tony Brown, The Plain Dealer June 05, 2010, 8:44PM Cleveland will lose its third-largest theater -- PlayhouseSquare's 2,500-seat Allen -- in September. The promised payoff, a year later: A three-venue, 1,000-seat complex for the flagship Cleveland Play House, which sold its outmoded facility, and for Cleveland State University's undergraduate drama program. All for a relative bargain -- under $30 million -- and preserving the 1921 Allen's architecture. http://www.cleveland.com/onstage/index.ssf/2010/06/proposed_renovation_of_playhou.html
  2. Yeah its between Euclid Hts and Cedar. Should be a great area (if the buildings are ok), even better if you were going to CWRU, but easy enough to get around from there. Great area to run in as well.

MTS, is that apartment in the picture on Park Avenue? Oh and with the rotten kid, if the mom wnont take responsibilty I guess you have to take matters into your own hands and kick his ass next time you see him......
  4. A couple of restaurant snippets to note: The old crazy Rita's space in Lakewood, this area is becoming quite the restaurant row (from Scene): Chef Demetrios Atheneos is leaving his post at Bodega to join the team at the soon-to-open Deagan's Kitchen and Bar (14810 Detroit Ave.). Dan Deagan is reworking the old Crazy Rita's space in Lakewood into a warm, upscale pub with exposed brick walls and salvaged barn siding. Chef Atheneos describes the food as "chef-driven pub fare with a twist," applying playful touches to traditional pub cuisine. Diners can look forward to things like truffle fries, Italian sausage sliders, soy chile-glazed wings, tuna tartare, as well as salads, sandwiches, and entrées. A new draft beer system will dispense 30 craft selections. Look for an early August opening. Also, Michael Simons pastry chef Cory Barrett has left town for a gig in Seattle... And Karen Small opening a market next door to Flying Fig. http://www.clevescene.com/cleveland/bites/Content?oid=1922209
  5. They have 3 addresses on W 26th listed for the June 14th board of zoning appeals for parking-lot work and re-surfacing.
  6. If your talking about the Warner & Swasey building, theres a picture of it in the story upthread in post 456.
  7. I saw on the museum website that they are installing the giant trusses for the "Atrium". Exciting! *Oh, theres also a picture in the article.....
  8. Yes, great job Jborger. And yes Docbroc I thought I recognized the Rocky River lady form past stuff about the Avenue District, but she's not nearly as famous as you.

Exactly, the fact that it is rare is why it should be an example to be looked at (the point being to look for creative examples). Maybe cleveland can use this when it comes time to build a convention hotel at the County Admin site.... Remember when Cleveland was known for its public private partnerships.... (uh oh McCleveland is in a tizzy)

Well you might want to look at the example down in Columbus with the new Convention Hotel they are building. Not that it totally parallels (I realize that there are many factors), but it does give an example of where the local government entities have been able to get somethinng built.
  11. Well after tons of study’s and reports done by Brookings and others about the deterioration of Ohio’s urban centers and the importance of fostering and prioritizing these areas in order to reverse Ohio’s fortunes, I think Ohio has finally come to some realizations. The state has been attempting to work on these issues by forming state task forces to come up with a plan. The Report from the Compact with Ohio’s Cities Task Force Report outlined some of these recommendations to give Ohio’s urban centers an edge when it comes to development/redevelopment and smart growth. I think the “hubs” were meant to be a guide, coupled with the Third Frontier Program, to funnel $$$ to these areas. http://www.morpc.org/pdf/Compact_Task_Force_Final_Report.pdf

Yeah, not bad for someone with a degree in..... French :-D
  13. Absolutely agree re: L'albatross. I thought it was outstanding and I don't think I ever mentioned it here. Definately agree on L'albatross as well!
  14. It looks like those are white pine which should burn up from salt that close to the road. Ill take a look next time in town. Yeah, they can be grouped away from the raod in green area like the Clinic has so much of, but would be pointless to put downtown on the street (in a canyon). Here is something from Channel 3.... They talk to an arborist that I guess helped with this project.. "Arborist Lauren Lanphear" http://www.wkyc.com/news/local/news_article.aspx?storyid=137182&catid=3
  15. That actually is what I thought they did successfully along Euclid, which gave me hope that somebody knew what they were doing with the plantings. (There were varieties grouped together for this reason) Now planted all mixed up and not in some kind of order is not a good idea at all. Evergreens will not grow in these city situations.
  16. The restaurant is still there. They had closed Brasserie in the lower level for the renovation project. S.S. gets alot of mixed reviews now (some tings are very good and other things eh), since they lost their original chef a while back to DC, and currently have a rather inexperienced young girl running the show. Its still a lovely place though.
  17. Well yeah thats what Im saying too, but it is best to look at the trees before they are removed for clues of what the problems may have been, not just resorting to planting honey locusts because thats what you do everywhere else.
  18. Oh ok, then your still working on RnR's and others questions....
  19. Well it didnt even sound like the Landscaper that planted them was given the opportunity to inspect to see what the issues were. Just this clown from the city that made his own uneducated assessment, with the answer being "replace with honey-locusts", which makes me cringe since that is pretty much all you see downtown.... But maybe there are'nt many options for some of these spots.
  20. Thats right, they werent doing it on their own time, that was part of their job as it would fit (Jerry anyway). But then I started to wonder if Jerry served any purpose at all. Jetdog on the other hand seemed to go out of his way to try to provide some information or feedback. Jerry, not so much.
  21. "The project also would include parking in an area now occupied by a building with a sawtoothed roof." I wondered if this meant the demolition of the sawtoothed building...., similar to the reasoning at Tyler Village. Although they could have indoor parking in these buildings.
  22. I liked this line: "I think this hospital is as great as it is because it is in Cleveland."
  23. Cleveland casino to open in two phases, in connected buildings By Reginald Fields, The Plain Dealer May 27, 2010, 1:00AM COLUMBUS, Ohio - By this time next year, Cleveland Cavaliers majority owner Dan Gilbert wants to have a casino open and occupying the first couple of floors of the Higbee Building in downtown Cleveland. It will just be a taste of things to come, a first phase of the main $700 million casino slated for mid-2013 near Tower City along Huron Road, The Plain Dealer has learned from city and state officials and business leaders. http://www.cleveland.com/open/index.ssf/2010/05/cleveland_casino_to_open_in_tw.html
  24. Sorry to hear that Scott. That is really unfortunate. I have been hearing similar stories, and it seems some of this bad element has even been creeping over to Clifton, since Ive also heard of a couple of incidents there. Thats what I was mentioning in another thread, if Cleveland doesnt step up patrols in these areas, and apply extra effort to keep it from spreading further, the city will be sorry when their "up and coming neighborhoods" stagnate... and the ones north or there that are supposed to be "nice" wont be for much longer.
