Deconcentrating Public Housing By Forcing it in Affluent Neighborhoods...Yes/No?
What happens to all the people that are currently in the Public housing, the ones that have been there forever (Yes it has has been allowed to become their culture and shouldnt have). Face it, we've fostered a public housing culture/generation. "make it possible/easier for working people to become homeowners." This concept hasnt worked out so well (current foreclosure crisis?). Not everyone is capable or qualified to be a homeowner.

Youngstown: V&M Star Steel Expansion
This is awesome news for the Youngstown area. I had to read through but it is the same as the above news. East Cleveland
These homes and buildings are stunning architecturally. Nice job Clueless! I wonder if any of these are part of a historic district. It might be a nice in order to preserve some of these beauties, and to prevent anything more inappropriate done to them (or torn down for that matter) but it can also be an extra burden on the home owner.

Cleveland - Family Oriented Neighborhoods closer to Case Western
Keep in mind that Villain is looking for something that may have been missed on their previous thread here. http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,21787.0.html I suggested Bratenahl as another option (that hadnt previously been mentioned), and is very easy to get to University Circle. There are some nice family streets there as well as the "old mansion" crowd, and its close to the lake.

Cleveland - Family Oriented Neighborhoods closer to Case Western
I was going through the just added ones today and had like that one. I think your on the right track as far as neighborhoods. I think your looking for the same thing we are, in the same areas. We are just not quite ready for the move yet. You can also check out stuff in Bratenahl, thats just through Rockefeller park and along the lake. Mostly larger old mansions there, but also some other things that are in between... Otherwise we have mostly narrowed down areas of Cleveland Hts, north and south of Cedar (Ambler Hts/Euclid Park/Fairmount areas) and several areas of Shaker Hts. The site I posted is good for filtering things like "new listings, size and price reductions" etc. Ive been keeping a file of them, so if you are going to be in Cleve., and you want some links just pm me.

Cleveland - Family Oriented Neighborhoods closer to Case Western
Villain, This is in a neighborhood that was previously talked about (Shaker Hts) Open house today, but looks like an adorable house in a great neighborhood. $250,000 with 4 bedrooms. http://www.trulia.com/property/map/3002316530-3339-Grenway-Rd-Shaker-Heights-OH-44122

Beachwood: New Eaton Headquarters
Eaton Corp. shares rendering of planned Beachwood headquarters with workers By DAN SHINGLER 4:09 pm, February 11, 2010 Eaton Corp. shared a rendering of its planned Beachwood headquarters with its employees today, giving a first glimpse of the 470,000-square-foot structure that the company says it will begin building in early 2011. I liked this "Executives in the highest of the building's 10 floors are to have views of downtown Cleveland and Lake Erie." Oh views... but not from downtown.. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20100211/FREE/100219931# Rendering of Eaton Corp.'s planned Beachwood headquarters.

Cleveland: Downtown Aquarium
The original proposals for the lakefront one from the 90's from whatever group (at this point I don't know which is which although I think it may have been the group behind the second recent proposal(E.C.?)) was to incorporate walkthrough acrylic tubes (as if you are walking through the middle of the exhibits). I was really behind that concept and thought it unique. Hopefully that can be Incorporated and hopefully the 2 groups will merge their efforts in order to do this.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
In DC they do not have trash receptacles on trains, but at the end of the lines (bus and trains) they driver does a run through and picks up papers and trash before returning to the route. Post 9/11 they pulled trash cans from inside the stations due to the possibilities of bombs, until they were able to equip them with bomb proof canisters. FYI RTA, funds were available to all transit systems for this purpose. R@R. In DC if there is a bag left on the train, bus or in a station, they literally evacuate the place until they find out what it is.

Cleveland: Opportunity Corridor Boulevard
Well said gottaplan. As I believe 327 put it a while back, this neighborhood stopped being relevant long ago, and will likely never be again. It is too fragmented and scattered to do anybody any good and is a huge drain on city services. The city needs to be thinking in terms of how best to make current neighborhoods stronger and how to best utilize the land in places like this to be productive again some day. Some people are still using the text book argument of why this would be bad, which most of us would be behind if it fell into that text book case, but it just doesnt. It is just too far gone.

Im finally hearing some sense on the OCB today (minus the Scene article and Clvlndr's observations of course).

Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
There are some good points.... Mostly this one: "Forbes’s lists are intellectually bankrupt and don’t deserve anyone’s time of day." But otherwise I dont see how most of his points would have changed the outcome.

Cleveland: Jack Cleveland Casino
I agree. The "dillema" that clvlndr is refering to is nothing different than what the current situation is.... So if Gilbert used it temporarily, wouldnt it just revert back to the current state of trying to find a use?? And if things go well, hopefully, adding the promise of greater demand.

Cleveland: Downtown Aquarium
Well if your talking about the powerhouse and this idea yes, but the former (being the second one) no. Cleveland Aquarium and Great Lakes Aquarium that is. They both seem similar, as in their passion for building a quality aquarium. So as X mentioned what is the difference/relationship... and why dont they just merge to form one stronger and more likely group?

Cleveland: Filling in Euclid Avenue
8shades, if the non-profit does not own the property they are in they would still be subject but otherwise, they would try to exclude the nonprofit from the BID footprint, which can be tricky because the BID area has to be contingent. It wouldn't be feasible in University Circle, which is why they would have to stick to their current setup. I don't see it being feasible along the healthline either, simply due to the fact that it is typically only supported/effective in a developed area, where the property owners have buildings with tenants etc... There is too much emptiness and absenteeism along the healthline for it to be supported and effective. Remember also that a BID district typically requires 3/4 property owners support in order to pass and that the property owners are essentially voting to tax themselves additionally... The current downtown BID is likely setup for the easiest passage and effectiveness. With BID's, bigger is not necessarily better.

Business Relocating to Cleveland - Need Space
cdogz. There are various programs through the City of Cleveland Department of Economic Development that will assist with something like this and possibly offer incentives. The neighborhood CDC's and councilman should also be helpful in directing you as well, but keep in mind that Cleveland has various incentive programs in the forms of grants and loans that would be beneficial to know about. Some of them are listed on this page from the city's website. http://www.city.cleveland.oh.us/CityofCleveland/Home/Business/BusinessResources/LoansGrants You can pm me if you need a contact in the department of Economic Development.

Cleveland: Filling in Euclid Avenue
I know Steelyard Commons used TIF's, as well as the Arcade hotel project, but Im not sure if there is an established district or if it is just a "case by case" designation. I could be wrong but I believe the 15 year tax abatements offered to new homeowners is not considered and has nothing to do with a TIF.

Washington, DC: Undercover Stream of Consciousness
The underground subway at the Capital consists of three lines: two on the Senate side on the north side of the Capitol, and one on the House side on the south side of the Capitol. Theres a map below that shows the different lines. 2 lines go from the Senate side of the Capital to the 3 Senate Office buildings. The House side only has one, going to Rayburn House office building. Then there is also an underground walkway going from the Capital to the Cannon house office building.

Cleveland: Retail News
Actually as has been pointed out, it could be argued that these cities are actually behind us in the evolution of traditional retail away from downtown (ones that are still maintaining a department store presence that is scaling down (seems to be where we were a number of years ago)). In many cases Greater Cleveland became more suburban before many of these other areas, and certainly more saturated in retail. There are few cases where downtown department stores are not struggling, and it is not just because of the economy. The remaining ones are typically in places that don't yet have the per capita saturation level that we have in Greater Cleveland (which is more than 3 times the national average), or the level of suburbanization, and maybe a few instances where they have a collection of places that cant be found in the suburbs, but its becoming more and more difficult for them as the phenomenon of developers, developing shopping further out puts the other cities in the same situation we were in seveeral years ago. I will try to locate the numbers (which I believe have been presented to you before).

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
Thats right: Tonight at 10 p.m. Food Network star Guy Fieri's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" debuts a segment on Melt Bar and Grilled in Lakewood. Is this online anywhere? I havent found it. It was a great episode, and made Cleveland seem very funky, cool with Matt Fish at Melt who came across as a psycho master at what he does. Guy was like "you people from Cleveland are crazy nuts" (something like that (not his exact words)), but certainly impressed by our creative talent.
