  1. Now that this has been published they will be getting tons of offers from various municipalities inside and out of the Cleveland region and state..... The competition begins. The only good scenario that I could have imagined is if (since the head of AG is friends with Bob Stark) that they moved downtown into his warehouse district project, but that is no longer on the table for Stark.

Great question.... Ill see what I can find out.
  3. On that same subject..... I didnt see this posted yet. CSU maybe moving their art and theater departments to playhouse square (separate from the Allen Theater plan) Would certainly help to add energy in playhouse square. Also, it does mention at the end that the plan is still to build an arts complex on Euclid. Cleveland State University Art Department could move to PlayhouseSquare's Middough Building By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer January 05, 2010, 6:29PM The university administration is negotiating to buy an early 20th century office and loft building at 1901 E. 13th St. owned by Middough Inc., an architecture, engineering and management company with offices in 17 U.S. cities including Chicago, Atlanta and Phoenix. The plan is to move the Art Department and the classroom and rehearsal spaces for the Theater Department from their present buildings off Chester Avenue at E. 23rd Street into the Middough building, located in the heart of the city's theater district, said John Boyle, the university's vice president for business and finance. The deal could mean relocating the busy CSU Art Gallery to the Haig Avedesian building at 1317 Euclid Avenue, where it could have frontage on the avenue, and proximity to the Middough building next door, Boyle said. http://blog.cleveland.com/architecture/2010/01/cleveland_state_university_art.html
  4. Not only does minimizing concerns of why many people dont like to use public transit lose peoples support, but it also tends to make them not care much period (here I was trying to locate grant money for some of the small issues at RTA that they claim there isnt funding to take care of, but when I cant get a response from anyone at RTA, why would I care anymore.) Im with EC, Confit and 327 on this one. Although I understand the importance of what KJP is saying, I disagree with his analogy., These things are not necesarily mutually exclusive.
  5. Is there any way of finding out if this is the expectation or norm for the security guys of RTA without it seeming debate like? (If this is the expectation then that is one thing, but if it is clearly not the way they are supposed to be operating then......) Also, Jerry if you are able to let me know at some point if RTA has people that seek out federal grants for things like litter and beautification as well as other things that have been discussed, would this not help in some regard? I have sent general emails to some RTA staff to find out but I have not had responses. Because this is part of what I do in DC, I would gladly send the info to whoever it should go(and even help with the process) I cant guarantee what is currently out there, but have seen things in the past year, and will look into further this week.
  6. Not likely.

I think he means the ridiculous new stuff off of Chester.

I found for the most part that the high taxes on homes in Shaker makes them less feasable to use as rentals, unless they were in really lower priced parts (small houses).

Fernway is fine. Not as many renters as Ludlow, Moreland or Lamond. Any rental in Fernway would be closest to Van Aken. Aside from MTS bias, if there are areas to stay away from, you will know them when you see it (less upkeep).

villain189, I have been looking in Shaker as well. Your mostly right about the areas. Generally the parts bordering Cleveland are going to have the most crime, since this part of Cleveland generally isn't the best part, but don't automatically rule out Boulevard most of it is very nice, maybe east of Van Aken (check out around Boulevard School/Drexmore area) then you get the bonus of being near Shaker Square. Most of the Fernway area is older with more Character then the Mercer area, with the exception of some north of Shaker (Much of Mercer south of Shaker is more 50's styles. Naturally the more east you are the farther to University Circle, but it is all pretty nicely accessible and a pleasant drive. Less so from Beechwood then Pepper pike and Mayfield
  11. I'm quite certain Cleveland has more corporations than Buffalo. My feelings are that certain events led to these companies distancing themselves from community-wide events. Think BP Riverfest. Bad PR for suburbanites=sponsorship evaporation. I know, but then I started thinking of the the previous sponsors that we used to see like BP, TRW, NC and even Revco. There are still many though... But they seem strangely absent.
  12. Didnt Cleveland used to have a lot of corporate involvement? Oh wait I think most of those corporations are gone. :|

Thanks for the pictures. Truely a charming neighborhood. My grandparents lived here. Love the deer! Question: Is West Park and Kamm's Corner considered the same thing? Is Kamm's more the business district?
  14. Yeah, unfortunately we seem to be hearing alot of rational for disfuntion, both from the general populace and the public officials in this region, as opposed to anybody actually addressing anything. I have heard some great questions and comments above, which I never see any responses to. Maybe after the 10 years of service it is easier to be complacent about things. I guess it shouldnt surprise me in a region where the Mayor of the largest citys moto seems to be "things are what they are" (with a shrug of the shoulders).
  15. A second AMEN to that. (I think 327 is quickly becoming my hero)
  16. Maybe, maybe not, but the city should know by now that to get anything done its gonna take a certain amount of cooperation and going through certain channels. They have missed out on so much potential funding sources due to their haphazard approaches. Thats everybodies responsibility.
  17. 327, you certainly hit the nail on the head here. This might be just one of many examples of how messed up things are there due to the lack of any inter-communication/cooperation/coordination between local agencies/governments etc...(and noting Jerrys non-chalant attitude about it.) Thats really where I feel every problem and roadblock lies in moving anything forward there. The city cant even figure out who is supposed to change a #$*& lightbulb that were so lacking during a recent stay downtown.
  18. Does anybody know why they didnt do a design competition for this?
  19. On the local DC-FOX news (AP story) this morning they had a story about Melt in Lakewood, talking about the sandwiches and then the crazy promotion if you get a melt tattoo that intitles you to 25% for life. Hey if it got you "preferred or no wait seating" it would be even better. It turned into a cross promotion with the tattoo guy on 25th. They said so far about 50 people got tatoo's. The anchors looked at each other funny after, because they didnt get it... Which is likely since its hard to find people passionate about such things here. All I could find is this little blurb. Great just what they needed, more publicity just beofre I came home and tried to take another stab at going there. :| Ohio Eatery Offers Discount for Sandwich Tattoos By The Associated Press "LAKEWOOD, Ohio - An Ohio restaurant is offering lifetime discounts to people willing to make an indelible display of their love for grilled cheese sandwiches." http://www.myfoxdc.com/dpps/news/dpg-Ohio-Eatery-Discount-Sandwich-Tattoos-fc-20091217_5133273
  20. I know at one point I researched the bridge lighting issue and was emailing the Flats Oxbow people. I never heard anything back from them. I too was dismayed when I brought people in one time to show off Cleveland, and most of the bridges were not even on (but then another time they were).... Persistence I guess. On the other hand. Im very impressed with some of the lighting that is done there. For example the Church steeple lighting program is pretty unique there. I know in DC, most of the beautiful church steeples are not lit.
  21. Thanks for all the info McCleve. Truly exciting! "The proposed hotel component (whose tenant is beginning to be one of the worst kept secrets around town, but still can't be mentioned)" This just cant be.... with no mentioned rumors on UO..
  22. Severstal recalls workers in Yorkville About 100 employees at the Severstal North America cold rolling steel mill at Yorkville have received an early Christmas present by being recalled to work. http://www.crainscleveland.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?category=framelink&link=www.tribtoday.com%2fpage%2fcontent.detail%2fid%2f531092.html%3fnav=5003&oas=www.tribtoday.com_page_content.detail_id_531092.html_nav=5003
  23. Im guessing this has to be settled before anything can happen with that property, no?
  24. I love my ABBA, I remember my mom playing the album when I was young, and then me (secretly) playing it when I was a teenager... (I totally blame that for my current state btw) And as much as they were a part of American culture, Im just not so sure they belong in the Rock Hall. On the other hand, are there still many deserving groups to be inducted?
