Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
No. They initially were adding jobs here, but the recent announcement of 500 are existing jobs here that were being subcontracted. They are just bringing them "in house".

Same here ZdaMan, but not ambidextrous. I consider myself left handed because I write left handed, yet I do almost everything else right handed.

The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
Listening to NPR I heard this whole thing on Marketplace about the Cleveland restaurant scene. Basically, how does Cleveland have such a great and growing restaurant scene when the ecenomy is bad? I just love when people underestimate Cleveland and are blown away..... Quote from website below. "DAN BOBKOFF: I didn't expect much from Cleveland's restaurants when I moved here three years ago. I had an East Coast snob's opinion of Midwestern cooking. Boy, was I wrong." Read or listen to here: http://marketplace.publicradio.org/display/web/2009/12/10/pm-cleveland-restaurants/

Cleveland: District of Design
FYI, the Cowell and Hubbard building recieved State Historic tax credits today. Unfortunately it was the only project in Cleveland awarded one (which we knew was a possibility this time) Looks like the rest of the state finally got their act together. From Crains: "The restoration of Cowell & Hubbard, 1305 Euclid Ave., received a state historic credit for $1.6 million. The building, owned by the nonprofit PlayhouseSquare, is undergoing an $8.6 million renovation that will make its second floor the home to Kent State University's Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative." http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20091210/FREE/912109966

Cleveland: Biotech Business News & Info
This is actually great news. It really tells me that Cleveland is really getting a look from these Bio company's and that (hopefully) we are really on our way to much more. Clevelands reputation is just to good in this area to be ignored. Hoefully its just the beginning!

AsiaTown Cleveland
It looks like someones playing catch-up today... I would go with most of your points, but less so on the bigotry part... As you said about the non-obviousness of the neighborhood I think plays into it most. I know when I drive around there Im always surprised how many Asian establishments there are, but they are very scattered, and you would never realize it unless you drove around. And the artists...... Why last weekends openings were important... it gives people a chance to see all the creative things that happen there, that they likely would have no other way of knowing... Otherwise it is a pretty quite and in some ways almost desolate seeming area (mainly because the activity is hidden). Yeah most people are "uncertain" of areas like that.... "Why, for instance, does Larchmere seemingly attract more visitors, despite the fact that Buckeye is equally proximate to Shaker Square and has a more intact commercial corridor?" Hmmm, I know I visited Larchmere the last couple of times I was back, and it was because of the collection of shops that they have and events that were advertised. It is a draw because it is a known district for certain things... Also there are a few good restaurants there. Im pretty sure thats why others go there... Is there a collection of the same kind of things on Buckeye that Im unaware of? (If so Im guessing poor marketing is the curprit). I know I try to visit Lucy's Struedele Shop on Buckeye, and they are trying to determine if they are even going to stay open, since Marika was robbed and then shot (call that bigotry if you want)... I have driven around there but havent found anything else that I would do there.

Cleveland: Lancer Steak House
In todays PD, hopefully they can re-build: Its a shame (and Murphys law) that it happened like this..... "Five months before Sunday's blaze, Dixon stopped paying the premiums on his business insurance coverage. In a tough economic year, he let his insurance lapse to save money, he said. He hoped to resume coverage after a profitable holiday season, start fresh in the new year. That was the plan. His eyes mist to tell it. Cleveland: Random Development and News
"My parents stayed at the Hyatt Arcade last time they were here, and they really disliked it for what you got for the money." That's funny. This Hyatt is especially unique since apparently no 2 rooms are alike due to the floorplates etc.. Some are crammed into small spaces (that have windows that overlook nothing)while others are huge (and have great views)! I have stayed here a number of times, and I have never had any trouble getting a better room. In fact I always go right to the room to see if I like it before I bring my luggage up. Last time they gave me one of the small rooms, I went back and asked for something bigger and they gave me a giant room on the end with windows looking out onto the reading garden on one side and the arcade on the other.

Cleveland: Lancer Steak House
Honey, there was no insurance. But it looks like a community fund is in the works. I almost dont think this warrants/deserves a community fund, since it was so irresponsible on the owners part.

W's even. I wonder what this will do to the hotels. And I wonder if this would put a damper on future hotels opening or in the works (for Cleve.)... until and if a convention center is built.

My grand father cannot believe it's gone. MTS, do you know if it was actually a good steakhouse, or was it more of a meeting/social place?

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
Businesses in Cleveland need non stop TATL service. We need to be able to compete globally and with to very large, high profile events coming here that showcase people from all over the world, we need non stop international service. The city and continental must get that INS/Customs situation in order NOW. In regard to your ONE situation, that could happen at any airport. ::) This is very true about a certain future event that is a few years away. I hate to see it become too difficult to get to CLE that people dont come (it would further fuel the critics of Clevelands choice for this particular event). Cleburger, it sounds like your wait was still quite a bit shorter than one could often experience at say Dulles (My experience every time there). Do you think this will serve as an excuse for CLE to shift resources from the INS/Customs situation, since it could appear to some there is no point?

Nice that they already rented 12 of 30 apartments and possibly sold 3 of 8 condo's, not bad considering they were not completed. I already had to counter one of the nasty post's on Cleve.com......!

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
In my opinion, we're still going in circles even with the tax, though I agree that we could very well be stuck at the beginning of this process without dedicated funding. My point is that if PA indeed has as many problems as claimed and will cost $90 million to renovate, why is this just being revealed when MMPI has had this much time to analyze the site? We might not even be "first to market"... part of the main reason why the PA was included in the site plan to begin with. Do we lose our competitive advantage if this project does not occur first? Will we get a world class facility built on Mall C, which the city would deserve, and should expect and demand for such a site? In my opinion, I just don't see $425 million being able to fund such a site along with the construction of the convention center. And at this point, I don't expect much from the county commish's in regards to restructuring the deal (if at all possible). It looks like another step for Nashville. This would tell me that if we are not first that $425 million certainly isnt enough for even a (competetive) comparable or world class facilities. (On the other hand, hopefully it is too much for them to get financed) From the PD: "NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Plans for a Nashville medical mart got a big push this morning when developers announced the site for the 2 million-square-foot complex: the city's existing, mostly underground convention center. Dallas-based Market Center Management Co. would build a $250-million, 12-story tower atop the current center, says a news release from the company. To make that happen, though, a new $585 million convention center would have to be approved, according to the Tennessean." http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2009/11/nashville_medical_mart_announc.html
