  1. Yes thats great. It was sad to go in and see so little activity, and empty storefronts which further gave people little reason to go in. I always thought it should be a little mecca of little indie ladies shops or something like that..... A critical mass that would draw people in. I know when Ive stayed at the hotel, on weekends it would be so quite. I read reviews where people were like "Its part of this empty, almost spooky structure"
  2. Was there a change in management or something that suddenly places are opening in the Arcade?
  3. On the Grilly's space, does anybody know (or are they able to find) if the building was indeed purchased since on the above site it lists it for sale as of early 2008. I was just wondering if MRN had bought it since I think it lies in their footprint of future plans. Although at the same time I would be surprised, since they generally seem to have a better sense of synergy and street fabric etc..
  4. Except they didnt first clean 668 if I understand correctly.
  5. Im getting the Ohio City Tavern Building (Grillys).. http://www.loopnet.com/property/15478998/2615-Lorain-Ave/
  6. I the replacement material was the same as the Terminal Tower, but I didnt think the Terminal Tower "painted" the existing surface in order to make it match (they did at least clean it). McCleve...?
  7. Thats what I thought last week when I read this in the city planning agenda. and the Moriah building is certainly not a part of the demo request.
  8. I would have to agree. While K&D gets credit for the project, Im always concerned about their ability to carry out a project correctly or appropriately. They definitely lack an understanding of urban planning concepts (as witnessed by their desire to tear down adjacent buildings). Maybe the difference between the old and the new was just too jarring, but to paint over terra cotta..... come on!!! (Would the historic tax credits allowed for this?)

Yes some of the comments are awesome! While Im very guilty of the overcompensating boosterism, I dont necesarilly agree that it doesnt help some negative perceptions. I can see where doing it desperately would look pathetic though. Usually I do it to people that have never been, yet have no or a negative impression based on other negative things they may have heard or read (or just the long running "mistake on the Lake" reputation that it often still carries). Usually when I counter with the some of the "best things/boosterism" that they didnt realize they decide that they need to keep they're mind open and may have rushed to an ignorant judgement. Some of these same people I have also brought to see for themselves, left very pleasantly surprised and are now big fans.

Youre both right and not right. There is a cluster effect that plays into how declining cities fare. Clueless you are correct about the Pittsburgh analogy, and it is likely that there would be better synergy and less emptiness if University Circle was closer to downtown (certainly less space to be empty, and more visitors going back and forth that currently would'nt) , but there are too many other factors in the bigger picture that play into what your saying to predict exactly how it would have turned out. The cluster effect has been a debate as far as city planning and economic development goes. Look at the report that was released yesterday for Cleveland that says that Cleveland needs to concentrate its resources into its strongest neighborhoods and clusters as oppposed to spreading them out everywhere, thus watering them down to non-effectivness. This has been the case for Cleveland for quite some time. Its about maintaining (and building on) what is good in a city that continues to lose population (and certainly the outcome would be different if it was a growing region/city) As EC puts it below quality vs quantity (quantity that frankly cannot be, and is able to be maintained given current circumstances)
  11. Exactly. And that's what the people that work in the establishments in the Warehouse district will tell you. Since the flats are no longer a regional/national draw (bringing in people from outside the area), there is an extent of just shifting people around from a "set" stagnant population (which is still frankly moving farther out). Although this is where things like Cleveland food scene recogniton and people like Michael Simon have added people from outside the region to this population. Also, this is where, the Med Mart and new Convention center are important to pump new people into this population of patrons. Plus, a casino will certainly bring in people that would not typically come downtown. As far as dining, aren't casino's known for their almost free meals for the gamblers?
  12. I must say that in the friendliness category Cleveland is at 13, and I'm not sure where it should fall, but I expected that DC would be at the bottom (#27 out of 30), but I am surprised that they rated better than NYC which is at 30. After being in DC for quite a while, everytime I go to NY, I'm pleasantly surprised by how friendly and rather courteous it is.
  13. In the "America Favorite Cities" issue of Travel and Leisure, they rated Cleveland very well in many categories, including #1 for affordable getaway. Check out some of the categories. Cleveland fared #2 in the country for Classical Music, #6 for Theater (#6 in culture overall, beating out many larger citys), and in the top 10 in many other categories. Kind of confirms some of what I thought in regard to DC and Cleveland, and where Cleveland fared better. I was a little surprised (yet not) that I didnt see any other city in the region (not Cincinatti, Pittsburgh or Columbus) even listed at all in the top 30 in any of the categories. (take that Pittsburgh ) http://www.travelandleisure.com/afc/2009/category/13/subcategory/68/

    WHAT!

Interview on Cleveland.com. He denies wanting to leave Cleveland and that he put his house on the market for that reason. *He did say "he is a batchelor, what does he want to live way out there for". http://videos.cleveland.com/plain-dealer/2009/10/cleveland_browns_quarterback_b.html

Sadly they only seem to be doing the opposite.

Yes many people dont seem to know about these gems. I only wish there were more of them. FYI, the end one in on the market... 399,999 http://www.trulia.com/property/1082286762-3657-Prospect-Ave-E-4-Cleveland-OH-44115
  18. I was actually wondering the same thing, and surprised I havent heard that proposed. Although Im sure it will rile up more than a few people...
  19. Im just pickin... They are some of the nicer new construction in Cleveland I guess, but they are also pretty pricey for Cleveland, with some seemingly pretty standard features. And the fee's (a trade off for the tax abatement I guess).... I want a house with a yard for poochy and garden for me. :-D
  20. Those bathrooms and that closet could use some help. Also, the host got the neighborhood wrong. Overall good. I agree. Where's the stylish tile in the bathrooms or the backsplash/glass tile in the kitchen. We took a look at these last time we were in town but....
  21. Actually I realize that this has been debated quite a bit, but last time I was in town and in the Warehouse district visiting some friends/bartenders etc., each one said that there is no doubt in their minds that E. 4th has drained business from the Warehouse district. At the same time, I dont see most of these people being regulars at a casino.

I believe Ohio Tech was the one that relocated some of their programs to Randall Park Mall (The former), so it would be good to know for sure where he will be attending classes, although either will be easy from anything on the east side. Edit: The Ohio Technical College's PowerSport Institute is located at the old Randall Mall.
  23. Well as Tedolph indicates, this is certainly easier said than done. If I was able to find a job in Cleveland after graduation from CSU I wouldnt be in DC.
  24. Just a reminder this Monday: Monday night at 10pm, Chef Heather Haviland will be mixing it up with Guy Fieri on the season premiere of Diners, Drive-Inns, and Dives on the Food Network. http://luckyscafe.com/
  25. Yes great indeed. Kindof makes me want to cry .
