1. Wonderful observations C-Dawg, especially the above. I certainly have seen this when visiting parts of Detroit and Cleveland after not living there for a while. These cities certainly have a very strong creative class, which I believe will eventually lead to something transformational.
2. Looks like they came to an agreement after all. Tribune Chronicle Cities reach V&M land agreement YOUNGSTOWN - The city and Girard have reached an agreement on transfering land from Girard for the V&M Star Steel expansion project. http://www.tribtoday.com/page/content.detail/id/528240.html
3. Yes I agree about DC.. Being here 10 years I have seen it change before my eyes. Dont worry, Shaw may be a bit cleaned up, but it is just as dangerous as it ever was.
4. Hey, that sounds just like Columbus! Risk? I didn't feel it was a risk, I looked at it as I would look at any neighborhood I was not familiar with. Why do you think it was a "risk"? Because its a minority neighborhood that isn't "hip", "trendy", "on the northside"? I ask that with all seriousness. I was going with what you said above. "Why were people trying to sell me crack, coke or themselves, this about 1 PM. I was like, WTF. at that point I put my camera in my bag. As a 6'4" black and latin man, my street terror alert went straight to orange! This area was disgusting and all I could think was how blessed I am. I would have taken pictures, but two dudes walked up on me. When I asked them Why TF are you following me, they crossed." That is all. I don't consider it a risk. I knew where I was going. I took the same approach as I would in any neighborhood I've never been before. I would stop, look at something, walk, stop look at something, they knew I wasn't from the area. I knew they were following me for 5 blocks (store windows and car windows are a great way to watch your back without tipping folks that are watching you, that you're watching them ;) ). I never felt threatened, but I needed to exercise common sense. MTS, I love how you seemingly make an indirect accusation and then go on to answer your own question . Im guessing the fact that people were following for 5 blocks makes it a bit risky since Im pretty sure they were not trying to welcome you to the neighborhood or give you tips on restaurants to try. When you have to actively watch your back because people are following you, it is more than likely risky to be there. Also some of us would stand out (be a target) in an area like that more than others simply for not looking like the locals.
5. Yes I loved that quote... Should be good for the E. 4th crowd though...
6. In many cities you now see some variation of a chocoloate cafe... (Not all of them serving liquor) Even DC has a couple versions (now), not as extensive as this one seems it will be, and they are not known for their progressive food scene. I think it is a good concept (since people seemed impressed with the Buffalo version). But Im not yet clear of the full concept of this one. Im glad something is going into that great space, although sad that Vivo didnt make it there. Im extra glad that its not another sports bar!
7. Agreed. Especially since there are three threads on this very subject. John82 welcome, I would like to suggest that you spend sometime learning your way around the forum and visiting older threads. Keep in mind, do to some recent developments, some thread are off limits while be "cleaned". I like it when newbies jump in, but check the board out as most questions you raise, will most likely, already have been asked and answered multiple times. Yes welcome. MTS likes it because he can harass and pick on the new people. Yes you will hate him at first, but underneath , he is harmless...... Like an older brother that you don't always get along with.
8. Thats goes along with DS attempt at keeping it a mixed income neighborhood. Yes I saw plenty when I was having lunch at Latitude on Saturday (there was a whole article about this in the neighborhood paper that I read while waiting forever for my good food). That is certainly a part of the neighborhood fabric.... A bit gritty and diverse..
9. Well the gay games are open to everyone, not just gays. And we already have the everything Black and to some degree everything latin (and neither are open to whites) so bad example. (We also have the special olympics and senior and childrens games)
10. Point taken. I removed the "name calling" before I even saw your post (although your name is clueless?) Yes your post with the rolly eyes was not very clear, especially in regard to the explanations given.
11. Thank god you came along to grace us with such brand new epiphanies? Apparently we've been living under rocks because lord knows we've never heard similar observations before. All I did was give feedback from the insider perspective as to why things are the way they are - and why things in Cleveland aren't the same as other cities, not a boosterish defense of why they're that way. See the difference? Are we not allowed to respond to outsiders' observations? Yeah I was going to say something similar. I wasnt really sure what that second post was supposed to mean, but the observation was likely somewhat accurate, but it is important to understand why this would be (which clueless didnt seem to understand), wheather you view it as a bad thing or not.
12. I googled CLE 2014 just to read other articles and came across a blog. 3/4 where pretty positive comments. A few said no one would come to Cleveland, blah blah blah... Oh well, not to dwell on this negative junk as this is an incredible opportunity for CLE! Yeah I was doing the same thing. Lets just say, I did some posting of my own
13. Or it just balances Gilberts inflated "positives" that would come with a casino.
14. Yes, without the Rock Hall the phrase might have been "Cleveland Eats"
15. They are certainly there, but Cleveland lacks a central or specific "gay ghetto" area that many cities have (where you would certainly see more gay flags). I live in DC and thought as far as accepting areas, Cleveland actually seems more gay freindly in more areas than it seems in DC (which has a much bigger gay population and tends to be more ghettoized). To me this is a good thing, but to a younger gay person that wants to be a part of that "everything gay all the time" thing, which frankly annoys me now, they wont find in Cleveland, and they tend to have to assimilate or are just part of the fabric in Clevelands funkier neighborhoods (which I havent found comparable in DC). Im pretty sure come time for the games, that the whole city will become gay.
16. I thought so. They mentioned there were numerous vacancies there? Doesnt Silk take up that space, or is the once Jillians still vacant?
17. It was mentioned that the tenants affected by the aquarium would be moved to the sugar warehouse (shooters building)
18. Crains gives these numbers: http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20090929/FREE/909299982 Not sure if they're too high or not. Hopefully not. [/quote] Those are way high numbers.... Generally 12,000 participants and maybe 100,000 attending. Theres no doubt that winning these will be an additional tool, in addition to the Medical Mart and Convention center etc.... for the potential of many projects downtown, or at least provide an additional push or incentive for many projects that are already being considered. But maybe most important as MTS mentions is the attention the city will get.... That can be priceless.
I dont think those numbers are high. With each GG the particiaption, sponsorship and marketing has increased. I've been to the San Fran, NYC, AMS and CHI gay games and seen how it's evolved. Those nine days are your olympics. Not including the parties and nightlife. Gay Games Press Release http://www.gaygames.com/en/media/releases/2009/FGG290909en.pdf Yeah it has increased but the participant numbers are pretty set... about 12,000, and the other attendance has been under 100,000. If that increases in Cleveland, I honestly dont think its going to jump to 250,000.....

20. Funny, but true.... Im calling and texting all the Washintonians I know that up until yesterday thought they were a shoe in for this... "why would dc not get it" and "why would Cleveland get it". I reminded them of there pathetic community rally they held compared to what Cleveland did, I told them not to underestimate Cleveland and that they were indeed winning this. Yes, I knew that Cleveland blew away the selection committee (compared to the Boston and DC) and was certainly confident this time Cleveland was going to win....
21. I have to admit I started balling when they announced it!
22. Congrats Cleveland you nailed it!!!!!!! Now lots to do.... This is very significant....
23. Thanks for that. Thats the first time I have seen that explained. I like how the PD randomly says one size and then the other without any expanation or regard to what they said before.
24. Oh this weeks story has the sq. footage back up to 123,000 sq ft. It has been back and forth between 123,000 and 55,000 sq. ft., without any explanation. (Im thinking for 9 mill it would have to be the 55,000 version with possibilities of future expansion, yet I have never seen this stated) Does the PD not realize this? HJG, how about some clarification?
