The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
Well said you guys. Ive now been in DC going on 12 years, and Ive come to terms with the fact that I will never own property here. I have a rent controlled apt. that is $1,250 a month (currently sub leasing) and I'm sharing a 500 sq ft condo with my S.O. that was $395,000 several years ago. To get something bigger here, we are looking at $600,000 to $850,000 and thats for a chopped up row house or a very small house a little outside of the central city (600,000 would be in a bad neighborhood). Since I have been home sick since I moved here, and since I don't need the daily ego boost of being in "DC", we are now looking at houses in Cleveland. Frankly we can buy a mansion there, and the quality of life just cant be beat. I have introduced Cleveland to dozens of people that have never been there, and they all have loved it (including my S.O.). It may take a little time to work through everything in order to move back, but I'm not willing to waste any more of my life here.

Moving to DC
Palijandro My one apartment is in Mt. Pleasant and I think it is the most stable of the ones you mentioned. It is just a few blocks from the Green line (also becomes yellow) so it is great for your job. Columbia Hts is changing fast but still very spotty... Lots of illegals in both places, so lots of disregard (but good luck getting away from that), but the gang activity seems ot have died down a bit, but Mt. Pleasant is definitely is more funky, organic, stable and diverse, and also borders Rock Creek Park, which when I drive, it is a good way to get in and out of the city, and great if you have a bike. I definitely wouldn't recommend keeping a car. I had one the first few years and really hated it here. Unless you have parking, which is expensive it is ridiculous to park, and when you drove you quickly found out what A-holes the Washingtonians are. Actually Friendship Hts and Cleveland Park are nice... There are some nice walkable areas and certainly the safest (that side of Rock Creek park), but also a little bland.... I will offer more in a bit.

Cleveland: Demolition Watch
Looks like they want to finish off tearing down the building that they removed the front of when working on the Euclid corridor. Dunham Tavern wants to expand into the space.

Cleveland Eateries: A Where To Guide for Visitors and Residents
You can also check out some of the establishments while you are there. There are the old time traditional Italian places and the new "modern" versions. Michael Angelo’s, is tucked away down Murray Hill and has a wine bar if you just want to check it out. Its very charming!

Cleveland: Calfee Building (Rockwell and East 6th)
His offices are in the 55 building. It will be interesting to see what the plan is if there is one, although also just a good investment, especially with the MM going in. MTS you had your chance. 1.3 million.

Correct? No, it's the East wall. The building sits on the South side of Euclid. Seems like the west wall to me...

Cleveland: 2014 Gay Games IX News & Discussion
This was my main concern. Too bad currently we cant even confirm that we have several in the works that will be open by 2014, as we could have said last year.

Cleveland: 2014 Gay Games IX News & Discussion
I also wanted to mention that DC did have reps (spy's) in Cleveland for their weekend and event and were apparently sending back messages "is it too late to.....". Also I thought it was cool that when the committee was visiting in Akron (they would use Firestone for Golf etc) that Chrissie Hines showed up to show her support for the area to the committee. At a dinner for the committee at the Cleveland Renaissance Saturday, the City of St Louis had reps there to show support for the city of Cleveland's bid. (not quite sure why), but nice.

Cleveland: 2014 Gay Games IX News & Discussion
I just wanted to give everyone an update on the site selection visits. The selection committee spent this past weekend in DC, and the DC committee held their community event Monday evening. They help a pep rally in a softball field behind 17th street, followed by an outdoor showing of “Hairspray”. I arrived at 7:30 :wink2: since that was when all the material said it started (yet it started at 7:00?) Granted it was warm, although not as muggy as I thought it might be, there didn’t seem to be much more than 400 in attendance (we counted). Yet they kept saying 1,000 to 1,200. Needless to say the field looked very empty! Apparently I missed the mayor saying some things and some lesbian drummers performing. When I got there it was simply the DC organizer and a man from a local news channel, talking about why DC was going to land this and how much DC supported it (not evident by the crowd). They were also pleading with those in attendance to call and donate (they had a handy screen displaying numbers to call to donate different amounts), sort of like a telethon. I was a bit embarrassed for them, considering what Cleveland did. The topper was when they announced “and something you’ve been waiting for”, 3 male cheerleaders came up and did a cheer….? Rather haphazardly at that... It was pathetic and resembled a poorly put together high school pep rally. They were to show the movie at this point, but I was laughing too hard and had to leave. I don’t imagine many people stayed. I believe Boston did a similar pep rally. I can say with confidence that Cleveland blew them out of the water!! From the blade: (The local gay paper) http://www.washblade.com/thelatest/thelatest.cfm?blog_id=26696 Brent Minor, chair of the D.C. Gay Games Bid Committee, and Micone each said they believed the turnout at the rally was good, given that the day was the hottest of the year, with temperatures in the upper 90s amid oppressive humidity. Others, however, noted that the turnout for the D.C. rally was smaller than what had been hoped for and far smaller than the rally last week in Cleveland, where organizers said the attendance was about 7,000 on the grounds of Cleveland’s Rock & Roll Museum and Hall of Fame. Schaaff vouched for the 7,000 figure. “They counted them. I was there. Everyone in the city showed up, I think,” he told the Blade. A spokesperson for the Rock & Roll Museum and Hall of Fame could not be immediately reached for comment on the rally attendance. But Gregory McCarthy, vice president for governmental and municipal affairs for the Washington Nationals, said he believes Washington has far more to offer than the two competing cities. NOT!

KC coming to Cleveland
I meant in terms of the tacky, typical tourist stuff that you could see anywhere :-P... (The fudgery where making fudge is an event...) Yeah, theres awesome bakeries and places to get these things, but they tend to be authentic Cleveland.

KC coming to Cleveland
kcpowercat1, it sounds like you experienced the "authentic-ness" of Cleveland. Things are pretty real and authentic and that's one of the many things that I miss about living there. This is what typically appeals to people about the West Side Market... and some of the other places you mentioned (not the same cookie cutter stuff you'd find in most cities), it still has the feel, smells and sounds of when it originally opened, and that is the real attraction (sorry no fudgery, or cookie company), but Ive found most people to pick up on this (although you went on a Friday as opposed to a Saturday, which feels much more touristy). Yeah, I think the Margaritas at Momocho would have given your favorite place in KC a run for their money. There are so many things that you missed out on due to limited time, that would have told more of a story, but glad you enjoyed.

Cleveland: The Residences at 668 Euclid Avenue
Well also I'm sure potential tenants wouldn't have taken it seriously at all had K&D not already had some questionable business practices (cutting corners, and bribing city inspectors etc.) Thus why I kind of found it humorous that they would make this comment: "It is unfortunate and disappointing that the unsubstantiated ramblings of a disgruntled construction worker would garner such credibility." To me, they somewhat gave reason to question their credibility when one of their own was indicted for bribery of a city inspector. Alright, I'll lay off K&D now....

Cleveland: The Residences at 668 Euclid Avenue
That's what I was worried about. K&D/city inspectores

Cleveland: The Residences at 668 Euclid Avenue
But isn't that what somebody would say that is trying to deny a problem that could be very damaging? (I mean its only unsubstantiated because nobody has substantiated it, which doesn't automatically make it not true)

Have you yourself contacted the leasing agent? Yes I have contacted them and they said this: "...our statement is reflected on the UrbanOhio.com website. This is our official statement, which we stand by 100%. If there is any question of your level of comfort, you may want to consider staying at (my apartment right now, which is K&D also)" :shoot: That's unfortunate that's as far as they were willing to go (I understand why they are limiting it to that, but it doesnt exactly put my mind totally at ease). I would try to talk to a construction worker currently working on the project to either get it debunked or confirmed that this could be an issue. (like was water ever really coming through the roof?) Can anybody confirm if that statement is sufficient? (doesn't seem so) Note they didn't add anything after the one vague statement.

Cleveland: The Residences at 668 Euclid Avenue
It certainly does not clear out anything, since it didnt even address that specific issue.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
I kind of got that feeling as well. Also, I saw when they did the final layoffs they were using the terms "indefinately" which sort of leaves it up in the air. In the Crains article they say" After closing the operation in May, ArcelorMittal, the world's largest steel maker, is restarting what it says is the world's most productive steel mill on the banks of the Cuyahoga River near downtown Cleveland. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20090806/FREE/908069974 So if its indeed the worlds most productive steel mill, Id say they should be safe... :|

Cleveland: Historic Photos
Its funny because one of the only buildings remaining from that picture (The Park Building) is also one of the least attractive from that picture (least ornate anyway). Still a beautiful building.

OK RandR now I will try La Campagna next time I'm back in town. Fortunately the region has many great italian restaurants.

I applaud KD Mgmt. for getting on the forum, but that sounded more like HR speak then directly addressing the issue. Why should they spend time "validating" comments by a disgruntle construction worker? Its the construction workers credibility that is in question, not K&D's. Maybe because it is K&D saying that its a disgruntled construction worker... So its only K&D's word against the construction workers. Again I hope it is not true but K&D does have a bit of a reputation, and they are a bit guilty of poor business practices in the past, so If they need to spend some time to repair a somewhat blemished reputation then thats what they need to do........................

I applaud KD Mgmt. for getting on the forum, but that sounded more like HR speak then directly addressing the issue. Exactly. I mean for a disgruntled construction worker, all he is saying is that people should get assurances before they move in. If mold isn't an issue that shouldn't be a problem now should it.

Cleveland Eateries: A Where To Guide for Visitors and Residents
Although I totally trust RockandRollers recommendations, little Italy would have more of a special ambiance for a special occasion than anything in “Westlake”,. although Stino's is very good..... MichaelAngelo’s in little Italy is great http://www.mangelos.com/ 2198 Murray Hill Rd • Cleveland, OH 44106 And of course they have canolli, but you can also, certainly do the window shopping/street walk after word and get Canolli or Italian Ice at one of the bakeries.
