Cleveland: 2014 Gay Games IX News & Discussion
Yes the turnout was impressive. I was hearing at least 4,000 to 5,000. They say possibly 7,000 in Spangle. By all accounts it was an impressive evening for Cleveland

Yes it seems to be a necessity and the only feasable option. Equally I worry about the Allen Theater being chopped up, and it was basically just restored to its original splendor.

Yes, basically.

No, this is actually the current plaza that leads into the lobby of the building (corner of 9th and St. Clair). The Zaremba part is the grassy area along the back part of the parking garage.

Actually there has been lots of talk on here about the cancer hospital and how it doesnt fit/setback/belongs in the suburbs. As well as the drugstores etc. We all know that the Clinic has a bad urban design concept, and they have been getting a pass because of their influence. But yes that shouldn't be the case with everything/anything else, just because the city is trying to show progress. Personally the cancer hospital setback in that spot didn't bother me as much since it is basically in an area of setbacks (museum/campus/park setting) The rather suburban looking design and how badly it connects with the other building is another story.

Hopefully its not true, although worth checking out since K&D has a bit of a reputation for cutting corners.

Cleveland: 2014 Gay Games IX News & Discussion
It was around. I know in the gay friendly publications and such it was advertised, but I also saw it in Cool Cleveland and a recent article in the PD. I believe the other alternatives would have had an add about it as well. I wasnt able to make it into town to attend but will get feedback later.

You hit the nail on the head. The city is only going to be what it makes itself.

Cleveland: Port Authority News & Info
Why is it that when someone steps in with some information that just may make some people stop...look...and listen before everyone jumps on the boat... They are looked at just as the statement above suggests? Is it too much information? Does it suddenly have us questioning something we thought we had our minds made up on? Could we ever even stop to entertain the idea that just maybe we could be in denial about something we thought we knew so much about and...now it may be too painful to seek alternatives or perhaps a better plan? The new guest is not an 'alias' It is not me, if that is what anyone is thinking. And as for Mr. Hauser... Any place is lucky to have a citizen like him who stuck his neck out to be a smaller voice in the crowd....and pose some different information in the midst when the rest of the sheep herd is about to follow each other right over the cliff. Lighten up. Frankly you put a little too much thought into that one . It was just that similarly as with the aquarium, the day after a major debate and expectations that you would come back with ideas, this happens. I got a chuckle more than anything. Another viewpoint can only be a positive. Welcome to the forum then DefendCleve , even if E.C. did have something to do with it.

Which was referring to the hospital.

Oh another "mysterious new person" just like in the Cleveland aquarium thread. I have a feeling this is a second (or third) alias for "someone"

Why? Not everyone who lives in subsidizing housing or owns subsidized housing is bad, careless or doesn't care about the property that they live in or own. That's like me saying to you, "you didn't grow up in the manner, type of home, neighborhood or status in which I did, so who are you to be worried?" As opposed to going through all of the reasons again, See the previous 5 pages. WillyB, my friend, we're going to have to disagree. I do think that the "development" plans for Euclid along with Prospect and Chester need to looked at again with a fine tooth comb, but I personally think mixed income and diverse areas are much more vibrant appealing and stable than exclusive neighborhoods. Disagree? You asked why, which has been debated for the past 5 pages. The reasoning why many people don't see this as a good fit is given there, the reasons are not suddenly going to be different.

Cleveland: 2014 Gay Games IX News & Discussion
Just a reminder that this Friday night (July 31st) is the event at the Rock Hall. We need this to be well attended to show the sight selection committee that Cleveland supports this and is the place. You dont have to be gay to attend, you just have to love Cleveland (since this would be a huge win for Cleveland) Cleveland has a good chance, and rates high in most of the categories, but they need to see peoples support and energy. (I know for a fact that the Cleveland contingent is planning much more to woo the committee than DC and Boston (which some may think would have an edge) and have underestimated Cleveland). In fact, most people in DC don't even know they are in the running. WHO: YOU WHAT: FRIVOLITY COMMUNITY EVENT WHERE: ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME AND MUSEUM WHEN: FRIDAY, JULY 31 @ 8PM WHY: BECAUSE YOU WANT CLEVELAND TO WIN. AND, BECAUSE IT’S A FREE PARTY. Dear Friends, You’re invited to a global party. It’s not just any party—it’s a celebration. A celebration all about why we love Cleveland, and why we’re proud to call Ohio home. On July 31 at 8 P.M. at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in downtown Cleveland, the Cleveland Synergy Foundation is throwing the “Frivolity” community event, a free night of music, entertainment, and celebration. You’ll have exclusive access to the entire Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum—for free. Why the party? The city of Cleveland is a finalist to host the 2014 Gay Games, a global event that promises to enhance the social and economic profile of Cleveland. But to win the world’s support, we need your support. How can you be a part of this historic event? Simply show up and celebrate. It’s free—go to www.clevelandsynergyfoundation.org and print out your invitation. This party promises to be THE EVENT of the summer, and you are invited. Come out and show your support for Cleveland as the host for the 2014 Gay Games. You Rock. Cleveland Rocks. My Games Rock. Be there.

Why does that not surprise me... Oh maybe because of some of the people I knew that worked there .

Race
Oh and MTS, one of the times that I was called a "stupid white boy" by a black DC cop was after I was robbed by a group of black guys (who of course brandished guns and yelled racial slurs), because I decided not to play into the racial profiling thing and cross the street. And, I know you would just call this street smarts, as will I from now on. Oh and I'm in a good neighborhood here...??
-
Race
MTS, I'm a white man in DC (in the chocolate city, as you yourself would call it) , I think I get it. But my previous sympathies have been diminished by that very chip. I could give you hundreds of examples. My black friends here from Cleveland do not play into that, and totally think they (the people with the chips and the ones that use the race card every chance they get) are messing things up for themselves and others, and they are personally embarrassed by it. There's a point that you have to look past that chip, because it really is bogging any sort of advancement down in my mind. (just like I have to look past my bad experiences here (not every black person everywhere hates white people, or is going to rob you)) Ways I didn't think before I moved here. Thus the circle of racism......
-
Race
Exactly (reinforcing my point), that's naturally what a black person with a chip on their shoulders response would be. I know you know their are plenty of those here in DC. (funny it wouldn't have occurred that if there wasn't a response was because they were being a belligerent Ah#$le. Yet I never said any such thing when I was called a "stupid white boy" by a black cop in DC (which was a typical DC cop at the time).... and we all know who the stupid one there was....

Well good for you t7. Yeah sometimes the locals aren't very good locals and they need some education. They are usually the ones that haven't lived anywhere else. Cleveland is lucky to have you. Oh, and I have a feeling that one day when the East back comes to fruition the Riverfest will be back in some shape or form.

"I don't know, not having been there and not seeing all the facts, what role race played," Obama said Wednesday night while taking questions after a White House news conference". So then should'nt Obama have reserved judgement till he had all the facts before saying the officers "acted stupidly"?

Cleveland: Midtown: Development and News
Some could argue the success of these neighborhoods. I know many see the abundance of public housing etc., as having really held these neighborhoods back, and a deterrent to moving into a home there. I know many from out of town (while loving the city) have had a hard time looking at these neighborhoods as livable places due to this. I have witnessed since the 80's people screaming about gentrification. Yet why is w. 25th street basically the same as when I was interning for Ohio City Developement 15 yrs ago? 8shades you make some good points, but when you say "representative population of the city, I think that way of thinking is only helping to determine what the population will continue to be (the population is not representative of the people employed in the city, most of those people live in the suburbs). With what seems like an overabundance of public and subsidized housing everywhere, and poor and rundown neighborhoods, and social service agencies, how could the city be anything but representative of a poor population. I guess because I have seen the opposite here in DC and witnessed the MASS gentrification that DC has experienced in order to cater to its white collar crowd, and while succeeding in drawing large scale development into the city, and lowering the murder rate by shifting some of that population to PG county (MD), there really is nowhere affordable here unless you live in a dangerous, non-gentrified area. Cleveland is not in danger of such things since it is a totally different set of dynamics, but I also don't think that everything has to cater to the poor population, or that it is elitist to want different or to change the dynamic of some of these areas (that have so much potential). I for one would like to see the day when Cleveland is not on the list of poorest cities. I realize shifting this around isn't really changing anything (although there is a pretty big disparity, between the city and the suburbs), but you also don't have to only cater to that population. Bratenahl losing population doesn't really tell me anything since most every part of the Cleveland area has lost population. I think the most significant loses have been in inner ring "former" mid income areas due to the influx of "lower incomes". Why do you think Medina and Loraine County's have continued to grow when the region has not? There needs to be a balance.
