  1. oh boy... http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2009/02/forest_city_says_it_can_build.html Forest City says it can build medical mart for $26 million less Posted by Jim Nichols/Plain Dealer Reporter February 26, 2009 11:09AM CLEVELAND — Forest City Enterprises this morning said it can build a new convention center and medical mart behind its Tower City property for $26 million less than if the facility is put up at the site of Cleveland's current convention center. Forest City's plan, unveiled at the Cuyahoga County Mayors and City Managers meeting, calls for a three-story structure, with the medical mart on the second floor at the level of the food court inside Tower City. The previous model for the development there had the mart in the old Higbee building...
  2. Keep in mind soleone that you will have a reverse commute (assuming 9-5) to Medina from anywhere on the west side of Cleveland and will never sit in traffic barring a major accident or weather. I did a reverse commute from the Edgewater area of Cleveland to Wadsworth (a little father than Medina) for a few months and always made it in 30 minutes or less.
  3. Welcome "soon to be" new northeast Ohio resident. I would check out Lakewood if I was in your situation. Best of luck with the move!
  4. "A news release announcing the ubiquitous coffee-maker's departure said HMSHost has an exclusive partnership with Starbucks in airports." And yet Starbucks is at two other BAA airports, Boston and Baltimore, so maybe they will eventually reach an agreement to bring them back.
  5. Jeez, all these posts are going to be deleted anyway. Can't you click on a hyperlink? "City seeking substitute for Mall C rib cook-off Plain Dealer 11 Dec, 1987, pg. 01 sec. B" due to "City building chief unaware of study on Mall C weakness " among other realted articles from the day. I don't need to read them. I remember this being the reason they moved the festivals.
  6. Where did you hear that? those things moved because they outgrew the space and sponsorship deals. If you have any facts that "structural" issues played into those concerns please provide a source. Here you go MTS, et. al. http://www-catalog.cpl.org/CLENIX/AAI-8095 Festivals were indeed moved (at least in part) from the mall due to structural concerns. Now back on topic.
  7. Hey, I could have a fuzzy memory but...I worked at the County parking garage during a summer or two in my college days and back then there was parking on mall C and this was also where some of the festivals were held. At some point the parking was ended and Mall C was cordoned off --I thought we were told it was because the weight on mall C was too great. But again, I could be having a faulty memory :| EDIT: OK, maybe my memory isn't as faulty as I thought! From a 2003 PD article on rebuilding the convention center: "Under the Mall, new exhibit halls could be built, with roof structures strong enough to support large crowds on the surface above for a Cleveland Orchestra concert or a Fourth of July celebration. The big steel beams that hold up the Mall today aren't sturdy enough to perform that function." http://www.cleveland.com/convention/index.ssf?/convention/more/1044095818166250.html
  8. Seems there were many more festivals and party events downtown in the past -- "Parties in the Park", Taste of Cleveland, Rib Burn-Off and the biggest of all was Riverfest in the Flats. Some were held on Mall C/B but at some point I think this was stopped due to structural concerns. Most if not all of these events that still exist have been moved out of downtown proper which changes the character of the events quite a bit, IMO. I used to attend some of these when they were downtown but no longer since they moved to places like Tower City amphitheatre. Just adding more lunchtime or Thursday/Friday evening concerts on PS would be a nice addition to the programming and fairly easy to do.
  9. Cleveland won the city vote: http://techczar.blog.com/4441449/
  10. The boiling is always precautionary due to the "possibility" that contaminates may enter the system when the pressure drops. You probably won't get sick -- sure hope you don't :-). Plus, many newer refrigerators have built in water filters which offer another layer of protection for you. problem is the filter won't filter e.coli, the biggest risk. OK, everyone affected just boil your water and stay healthy! All I'm saying is I wouldn't be too worried myself if I had a glass from the fridge or brushed my teeth this morning -- the main concern with a water main break/pressure loss is possible contamination via back-flow into the system, not necessarily specific contamination like e. coli. This is why we have "anti-siphon" valves in our toilets, back-flow prevention valves in any commercial/industrial setting, and even anti-siphon hose bibs in any new home costruction so someone's hot tub water can't get sucked back into the water system when the pressure drops.

  12. There has been way way too much torn down in CLE so don't take this the wrong way..but wood frame residential from the early 20th century that predominates in many Cleveland hoods in nearing the end of it's functional life anyway. I'm talking about "lower" quality construction, obviously anything with historical significance and/or high quality wood frame construction should be preserved and re-used/saved.
  13. it's Easton inspired :-D
  14. Columbus will be a good study over the next decade or two -- can it sustain economic and population growth as it has for the last 40 years? The annexation era has obviously come to an end and the city is already being forced to deal with the disinvestment/redevelopment cycle in the 60's and 70's growth areas (not unlike others cities inner-ring suburbs) while at the same time facing the typical problems that all cities face in the urban core area.

Ah...I think a few old pics are great for the comic relief if nothing else. Plus I've had people tell me they've been trying to look me up for years (10+) and were finally able to due to some random fb connection. Of course there are probably people from my past I don't really want to find me so it cuts both ways I guess.

Switch over to Nikon and get the D40 for around $400 now..of course if money were no object, I like the new D700 fx model (only $2,700) but alas money is an object. I'm a total newbie but I believe the adage that the digital bodies are "disposable" and if you have money to spend, spend it on good lenses.
  20. A snip from this link -- http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/12/another_gray_morning_editors_p.html And Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson writes a column to protest negative thinking: "Cleveland's biggest impediment to achieving civic greatness is the pessimistic, unenthusiastic mindset of many within our region." This could apply to you commenters as well as us headline-writers.... Bold highlight mine...
  21. Love nighttime street shots...looks like lots of possibly once-a-year downtown visitors were checking out E. 4th.
  22. Wonder what the backup plan is if someone decides to not answer their phone.
  23. ^ wow, why doesn't the Trib tell us what they really think about the PD article...
  24. I was looking for an excuse to post a color shot..so here's one for UncleRando:
