Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels to those hitting the road this holiday weekend.
  2. Yes, nice pics. I gotta say that the Book Loft is one of the top two or three things I miss from my 11 years in Columbus..went there often, especially this time of year. Wish there was something like it in Cleveland.

I text quite a bit, usually for quick messages/queries -- "I'm running 10 mins late..." or "where are we meeting?" etc. Seems really convenient to me, especially when in a busy location, event or with a group of people. I'm much more annoyed sitting in the airport listening to people blab on their cell phones vs. texting. I'm the kind of person who will confront somebody talking on their cell when there's a no cell phone sign (for instance at the NW airlines club) and ask them very loudly if they are able to read. I have an unlimited data plan on my phone (Samsung Blackjack/Windows mobile) so I don't pay a fee per text, maybe if I did I would use it less.

^Problem is that the l-35 bridge failure is being blamed on inadequate design and overloading due to construction equipment. I really believe our very own inner belt bridge is a better poster child for neglect of/failure to invest in existing urban infrastructure.

My reference was to "blue light" specials at k-mart..being cheap on existing infrastructure..seemed funny at 3:00 AM :drunk: It would be cool if there was a warning light though or are the closed lanes and no trucks signs enough of a warning already?

Don't know what else to say at this point..we have a "red light" special carrying "119,000" vehicles a day over the the Cuyahoga river valley..if this doesn't become a NATIONAL rallying point for neglect of our existing urban infrastructure then what will? http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/11/red_light_marks_the_spot_of_in.html
  9. Very sad news... Ed Hauser, 47, environmental activist who fought to preserve Whiskey Island Posted by April McClellan-Copeland/Plain Dealer Reporter November 16, 2008 02:30AM For the past 10 years, Ed Hauser threw his entire life into saving the green corner of Whiskey Island, a peninsula with grassy fields and meadows on Lake Erie at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River. There will be photos soon I'm sure.. So I don't even have to get drunk to sing karaoke but I had 4 Christmas Ales anyway. Nice to see some UOers and friends last night, hope everyone had a good time. I sure did :drunk:

So ODOT was out in full force this morning (2:50 AM, at least 12 trucks and 3-5 CPD cruisers) installing the "No Trucks" signage on I-90 east. Why not just finish the task and submit the required paperwork to the FHA to designate the I-490/77 route as I-90. Then, to put a bow on the whole debacle, the City of Cleveland could rename the existing inter belt span "Third World Infrastructure Memorial Bridge".

Thank you but there is one and only ONE song I will sing at karaoke (just Fred's part): And ain't NO WAY I'm singing it Thursday night! :-P I think I would rearrange my schedule to see that!!!

  15. Actually I think this is wholly unnatural. "Too big to fail" has morphed into something else entirely, with a few powerful individuals pulling the strings and our government essentially nationalizing a large swath of the financial sector and not to get OT but it looks like auto manufacturing sector as well.
  16. Just hang in there for a few more years, the PD will be out of business with any luck. 18. Click on the links for some short video clips from the grand opening. I had hoped to ride all the way out to UC after the ribbon cutting but I only had time to do that if all the speeches were short -- wishful thinking on my part  Ribbon cutting Windows Media (hi-res) Flash (lo-res) First official run, didn't stop for the passengers at W. 6th who had been patiently waiting for 10 or 15 minutes... 19. I'm sure a number of UO photogs will be at the festivities on the 24th. I'm going to get some video. Anyone interested in meeting up and forming an unofficial/freelance UO "press" contingent? Power in numbers you know...
  20. Went into Bob Evans once while my car was being serviced and saw Drew Carey eating there. This was about a year ago so it was after his heart attack...
  21. Based on its condition, I think it would have been a good candidate to be moved at least, rather than demolished.
  22. ^ That's really a shame... are there any renderings of this new library entrance/reading garden? At least it wasn't torn down for a Walgreen's or someting like that... edit: I answered my own question

  25. Look, fact is Larkin is old school and he has had a prominent spot in the local print media at least since the 60's if not earlier... He likes to tweak the powers that be on occasion but more often than not he goes along and along and along... I give credit to the port on this and Wasserman -- an outsider. Many in this city, and even on this board, were willing to accept the Eaton "campus" as part of FEB but that campus would not have been the highest and best use of that port land period. You cannot argue that. Forget about the railrod tracks, the RTA WFL loop, these are obstacles that have been dealt with in other cities of much less size and stature than Cleveland. If the port vacates and sells that land as the long term plan dictates, the expectation has to be a world class lakefront neighborhood, nothing less. What Eaton wanted was 180 degrees from that.
